From the plane he took to Spain Ryo knew he was in a different world. Japan had its share of western influence but it was nothing like being thrown into it head first. The wizardry seemed so different... Even knowing better, he still half expected the inside of the castle to be tatami matting and rice paper walls. The stone walls made for what he felt was a rather bleak look.
He had just reached the school and was already homesick. Ryo knew however that this was the only place he could go, he could never go back to Japan.
"Kuso," he muttered to himself trying desperately to remember his english and spanish, not sure which he would be using.

"Ohayo!" the Japanese boy called out happily. "That's how we say good morning in my country. It takes me a moment but yes I can usually understand well enough. I'm good at picking up things I hear."
Ryo only make eye contact from time to time, a habit he picked up from the suspicion he picked up in his country. He hated having to do that because it made him seem rude but he figured it was better than charming the poor girl. Something about his eyes seemed to draw people to him and he wasn't sure why. Adding to the 'problem' was the fact that his good looks and long hair tied back into a waist length ponytail made many girls wonder if he was a girl himself, a thing which in Japan was usually found surprisingly attractive.
"I am Kanagawa Ryo. I am pleased to meet you," he said bowing slightly. He wanted to smile but he knew that showing his fangs would most likely frighten the girl.

"That's good, " she said, fairly pleased. When the boy bowed she couldn't help but giggle. "Is it a custom in your country to bow when you meet people? Back home we kiss each other's cheek as a sign of welcoming."
"Ohayo is a cool word. I wish I knew one of the native languages from back home, but sadly I never put in any effort. So now I'm stuck here without a cool greeting." Verity sighed and shook her head as if in disappointment. "And don't worry if it takes a moment to process English, I'm not sure if I gave the taxi guys the right amount of euros. I probably didn't, since he drove away swearing in Castilian."
Verity scrunched up her nose as an image of her mother flashed through her head, reprimanding her for rambling without end. "Sorry if I talk too much."

Ryo gave a sly smile, "A kiss on the cheek? Maybe I should do that next time I see you." He chuckled a little and continued, "Yes, in Japan we tend to bow and more so in the case of addressing a superior."
He took a moment to collect his thoughts and take in her sent. He loved the smell of new people. He was careful not to actually sniff the air but let it drift passively to his nose. People didn't take kindly to being sniffed. "Oh, Euros, they are much more powerful than our Yen. Where do you come from?"
Post by Verity Blacklace on Nov 18, 2008 19:41:16 GMT -5
Verity laughed. "Yeah sure, greet me that way, but'll you'll have to greet everyone that way, even the professors. You can't be mean and limit your kisses to one person."
She hummed to herself slightly. "I come from Latin America, I was born in Argentina, but I've lived in a plantation in the Amazon for a long time. I guess I'll be able to call this place home too, one day." Then she tugged off the dark brown flapper hat and pointed to the blonde hair, roling her eyes as she did so. "Unfortunately, people don't believe I'm Latin because I'm blonde. Obviously they have never heard of Nicole Neuumann."
"An Euro really is powerful, and it is four times as powerful as the coins my dad uses. Do you thing that there is a Spanish magical coin? And what about in Japan?"
Post by Ryoko Kanagawa on Nov 19, 2008 16:15:32 GMT -5
Ryo smiled, "Ok, I will stick to bowing then. I'm sorry to hear that you are considered an outsider, I can't imagine how annoying that is."
He paused for a moment to think about if he had seen any coins, "I am too new here to know for sure and in my country we do not. Things are a bit different there, but that is a long story."
Post by Verity Blacklace on Nov 19, 2008 16:44:19 GMT -5
"Really? I guess it really has to be very different. The language and customs and traditions are very different in these two countries. I've heard Japanese is such a difficult language to learn. I've wanted to be able to speak it for a while now." Verity put her hat on and paused to think.
"I know this may seem a very intruder-ish and impertinent question but, don't they have magic schools in Japan? I mean, it must be easier for you to learn magic in you native language. Not that your English is bad or anything."
Post by Ryoko Kanagawa on Nov 19, 2008 18:08:22 GMT -5
It was a simple statement, but one he had not expected. "Of course we have magic schools in Japan, but I cannot go. I do not wish to explain why, but if you are interested enough you might just find out the reason later. If you wish, I might teach you a little if I have the time but it is usually difficult for foreigners."
"One major difference is that in Japanese homes, all children are taught basic Onmyoji Mahu. The more advanced techniques are a form of divination and ofuda engraving but most children learn simply how to summon shikigami, known in the west as familiars. Is it true that over here you inherit or buy your shikigami?"

"Familiars? In Europe, I'm not very sure. Back home the only to use familiars in their spell casting are the ancient chamanes or curanderos who live in the native tribes, they never told us where they got their familiars. There are legends about how these familiars are messengers of the Great Spirit and how they are supposed to show you what to do."
Verity smiled as she remembered the nights spent in the nearby tribes. "It's very interesting to watch the curanderos speak with the familiars, but modern natives prefer to use totems in their city houses. It makes the magic less effective, but really, who can keep a tiger in their home?"

Ryo smiled when he thought about the tiger comment. "Oh, I seem to be mistaken, I thought that the owls and other animals that wizards have are like what are referred to as familiars. I'm sorry if I am mistaken."
Wondering what else to talk about, the boy switched to houses. "So, I'm am from the snake house, umm Slytherin I think. You?"
Post by Alexandria Naia Midnight on Nov 22, 2008 15:56:59 GMT -5
Alexandria had found her way to the arch of her new school hours earlier, and already had her luggage put away for her. She didn't get her dresses dirty, let alone her painfully gorgeous hands. She was a woman, after all. Sure, she may be only sixteen, but she was raised among the highest. As she had nothing to keep her interests occupied, she decided to remain in the arch to peer in on the students. Curious creatures, these. Just as she had been about to give up and wander away to find some other mundane activity to capture her attention for a clip of time, two children appeared. One was a Japanese male, the other some south american that knew absolutely nothing about her country's true secrets.
Alexandria listened in quietly, her long black tendrils keeping her hidden in the shadows despite her violent blood red gown. The Japanese boy seemed to be hesitant. The girl was as stupid as they came, though. Alexandria's lashes fluttered in irritation as she spoke of familiars and the curanderos of South America. She really knew nothing. She sounded less like a real native, and more like someone who read one too many Don Carlos books. It irritated her enough, even though she did not associate with that cousin anymore, that someone spoke openly of it. What an idiot.
"Actually, curandero is the term used by those who don't know any better. And familiars only come around the brujas. The holy people of that country do not use 'familiars'. That's for the 'witches' and the twisted ones. You sound like you've read one too many new age books, child, and not like you are from there at all." Alexandria moved slowly out of the shadows, her near-crimson eyes hidden behind her swirling black locks. Her red corset-topped gown hugged her voluptuous form and contrasted very nicely with her cream-coloured skin. She was gorgeous. "If you are, you were with the evil ones. Poor child, you already have a twisted sense of light and dark because of it."
A disturbing smile set into Alexandria's blood-coloured lips as though she knew something the poor girl did not. And indeed she did. Much more than she should for her sixteen years. "And to speak so openly of curanderos will only get you killed..." Something flashed behind those crimson eyes, something the girl most certainly should not be interested in finding out.
"The true holy people of Central and South America are hidden people. I should know... I know one." She did not dare say who; that would break the agreement. And she indeed feared for her life if that ever should occur. She would die in an instant and she knew that. She never once doubted her cousin's abilities. Not once. And since their last meeting, she had become much stronger. She could feel that much from the castle.
"Go back to reading your stupid little books and remain mis-informed. That is how they want the world, after all. It is unfortunate... The true holy people cannot reveal themselves, and the brujas run around saying they are curanderos to garner your belongings and life-force to continue to live. Vampires, of sorts. Beware, little girl.." And before Alexandria could imply any more, some other girl came crashing in. A wry smile twisted its way onto her lips and deep, seductive laughter flowed out. She waited for the three students to get through the shock and sent a look to the girl that would send shivers down a slayer's spine.
"You see? Instant kismet, dear..." She would have to find the girl another time, though, and teach her light from dark. For now, she melded back into the shadows to simply watch from a safe spot on the stairs several floors up. A secluded area with a view of the entire arch from above. And away from the kids. Perfect.
Such a stupid little girl. Perfect.

Ryo was hurting a little but was too intrigued to care much. His cheeks exploded red. Even though it was unintentional, this was the closest he had gotten to a girl. He felt foolish for going red but decided to laugh it off.
"Heh, I thought you were supposed to avoid us," the boy said with a sly smile.
A new sent made the boy drop his smile for a moment. The malicious intent was nothing new, what was surprising to him was that it didn't seem directed at him. He could make out a little of what the girl was muttering if he strained his ears. He wasn't sure why the person was so mad at Verity but he figured he would probably have to try protecting her. He focused back on the girls hoping that the mysterious person didn't realize he knew that she was watching from the shadows.

Verity yelped as she toppled to the floor. "Oh that's okay! I've set fire to our living room, so this doesn't hurt. Much."
After assuring the girl she was okay, Verity sighed in annoyance at the weirdly dressed women who had obnoxiously corrected everything she knew about magic back home. Sending a pointed look towards Ryo as in "See that everybody considers me a tourist know-it-all?"
"Oye, mija! Yo se que probablemente puede ser que no tenga razón, pero no hay razón para actuar así. No actues así de mórbida sobre una equivocación."
Verity stopped talking back in Spanish, and turned around. "Sorry about that. And seriously I'm okay. Cool skateboard."
Note: Verity's a character: loving yet selfish and stubborn. I wouldn't go about screaming like this but well... Verity would.
Edit x2: Yeah, re-read this, and I see that Verity was a bit harsher than intended, so I'm gonna modify this.

"Oh, I'm sorry if you think I was yelling at you, because I wasn't. Corset-lady over there," Verity Blacklace jerked her towards the woman partially obscured by shadows, "Was insulting me so I just sort of started to shout at her. In Spanish. Yeah... life tends to make things awkward for me." Verity sighed.
"I was supposed to say something..." Verity thought back to the conversation. "Yeah, I'm in Ravenclaw the House of the Overly-Clever-People. But I think it's great."
