After receiving her gown and mask, Lucia made her way to the feasting hall for the New Years Ball. Her hair was kept the same as always except for changing her pink ribbon for a shimmery white one. Making sure her pendent was in plain view, she walked in to be welcomed to blaring music.
She made her way gracefully through the crowds and to a small table in the corner where she sat down and waited patiently for Lucre. It was only a few days ago when he gave her half a red tear to use to point him out.
Taking the small red gem from a compartment in her sleeve, she stared down at it with a small smile. Her emerald and sapphire eyes looked up in search, but found it pointless to try sitting down. Standing up she started to make her way around the dance in search of the other half of the red tear. "Let's just hope I find him," she whispered to herself.
Now that was going to be the hard part. It was like trying to find a nicely dressed needle in a haystack.

Everything was ordained and arranged so nicely, it almost seemed hard to believe that this was where he used to eat all the time. Everything was laced over and shimmering with platinum and silver, matching the new Winter theme impeccably. It was said that Sylph O'Dell was in charge of the Masquerade committee, and her taste in apparell and decoration shined through quite brilliantly. All the tables had been removed to allow for space to dance, and the party was already coming out to a heated start.
Looking around, Lucre had been disguised in men's Victorian wear, with a red vest and pants over a white shirt with long, billowy, floofy sleeves. The top of the collar was undone by a few buttons, revealing the slightest hint of the two necklaces (one shaped like half a red tear, the other a blue sapphire) mingling together underneath. Lucre's hair had been slicked back into a more spikey fashion, and it was not easy to find a middle ground of styling gel that would keep his hairs' shape but not make it totally petrified. Several dips in the bath were a testiment to that, and that was why Lucre usually prefered keeping his hair down unless it was shorter than this.
His mask was that of a porcelein black cat face with golden embroidery of its facial characteristics. Lucre's fingers coiled around the sapphire his date had gifted him with temporarily. It was strange, that she would entrust such an invaluable treasure to a total stranger that day, even if it was fairly apparent that the two liked one another. To Lucre, it did not matter if she did try to keep his half of the pendant without asking; for one, he was friends with an S-class-wanted-by-INTERPOL-thief. Reaquiring such a triffling item would be child's play for him. But aside from that, Lucre now had the ability to turn into a cat at will. He could do his friend's job just as effortlessly. However, Lucre knew in his heart that nothing like that would happen with a girl like Lucia Highlands. If he did not feel that trusting of her to begin with, then offering such a gift would never have crossed his mind. And he had no more intention of doing that with her prized heirloom from her departed mother. After all, he could have easily made due with a handkerchief or something cheap and negligible like that.
Gosh, there were so many things to ask her and talk about.....but he'd never get to any of that if he did not find her first. Deciding to put one of his little cat-niches to the test, he opted to pinpoint her scent. Nudging his mask up ever so slightly, Lucre raised the sapphire to his nose and gently breathed in the girlish scent that still stayed strong even after a couple of days of staying on his person. Oh yes, the girl was there. He almost instantly found a match to the wavelength of her scent. His sense of smell wasn't as prominent as that of a dog, but it wasn't like he was trying to find a needle in a haystack. After he matched the wavelength, he looked hard and found his girl: Same hairstyle, but all silver. Silver embroidered mask, silver gown, even a silver hairbow.
And here he was, keeping her waiting. Pulling his mask back down, made sure that he approached her as directly yet invisibly as possible. With all the noise and activity, it was easy for even one dressed as conspicuously as Lucre to blend in. Right until he brushed shoulders with her, with his left arm brushing with her right. His hand found hers, and his fingers mingled a bit with hers in greeting.
"Hello again. You look exquisite, Lucia Highlands." he said in a slightly muffled voice through the mask. While merely glancing over his shoulder, his free hand fished out the necklace with his half of the blood red pendent.

Hearing a familiar voice along with a gentle grasp on her hand, Lucia smirked and laughed slightly. "As do you Thomas Lucre," she smirked looking down at the floor. "Not really, you can keep it if you wish," she spoke softly in response to his question. Holding to other half of his pendent in between two fingers, the normally mousy girl smirked lightly. "But I do believe I have something that belongs to you," she stated barely moving her lips.
So it was he that had found her first. Though she wished for the opposite, the Hufflepuff thought it was a better idea for him to find her quickly instead of her searching for eternity. "So how'd you do it? Are you psychic or something?" she asked teasingly as she looked up at him. If her mask wasn't hiding her eyebrows one certainly would have been raised. It seemed almost inhuman the way he was able to locate me she thought to herself.
The night was absolutely perfect, the decorations, the music. It seemed that the Deputy Headmistress put a lot of hard work and thought into this gathering. Lucia had heard about the Start of Term Dance and how many people had shown up along with all the fun they had. So going off of this, the Dutch Noble hoped that this one matched in expectation.
Getting back on the main thought, the brunette did a once over of the Victorian style that Lucre had worn. Red, white and gold seemed to be the predominate colors in his attire. She also had to give him props when it came to his choice of a mask. Especially with how clever and graceful he had seemed, a cat was the perfect choice.

"You give me too much credit. This was all I could find on short notice." he admittedly felt a little sheepish as Lucia's compliment was just as heavy as his. He actually meant it though, that she was positively stunning. Even though her attire allowed her to blend into her surroundings to a certain extent, her natural beauty actually caused her to compliment her surroundings all the more so in the same breath.
Lucre's eyebrow also perked up in response to what she said, underneath his mask that is. He was refering to his own necklace when he held it up, but it appeared that when she said he could keep it, she was refering to her own sapphire necklace. He was ultimately puzzled by how little attachment she held to something as precious as this. On top of its obvious monetary value, this was a keepsake of her mother, with only one twin to call its own. Her kindness was profound, and Lucre found himself silently lacking in words, save for simply asking if this was right? It was not like she had lots of sapphire necklaces to pass out to new friends, the way Lucre had oodles of honeysticks that he'd never miss.
"How can you feel so right in giving this to me? I had every intention of giving it back to you."
"As a matter of fact," Lucre's surprised and somber tone returned to normal. He realized that she gave this to him of his own accord, and thus, it'd be his to give back if the time ever called for it.
"That little necklace had actually guided me to you. If not for this sapphire, I wouldn't have found you nearly as quickly."
Turning to face her, Lucre decided to temporarily accept her kind gift, provided of course that she also hold on to his part of the pendent in return. He woldn't even think of mentioning his half again. Lucre could definitely tell from the way she gazed at him how interested she was in his secret. Would he tell her here? He decided to wait a bit until they got to be more private with one another. It would speak much more profoundly to show her his secret rather than tell it, anyway.
"I'll show you how it helped me later. For now, would you care to dance with me?" he asked as his fingers laced more possessively through hers. His hand never stopped holding hers since he first bumped into her. The music slowed to that of a gentle waltz, and it seemed a fitting opening dance for the two students.

"And it suit's you well," she smiled as she looked around casually. When she said that he could keep the sapphire, she held back a small laugh at his shock. Sure she could afford to give such a gift to someone, but that wasn't the reason at all.
"The only reason why I feel comfortable giving it to you is because what you have there was my necklace. The twin as I said earlier," she smiled as she tugged on a small silver chain around her neck to produce another exactally like it. "See the thing is, my mother told me to give the one that you are currently wearing to someone whom I felt a strong connection with," she said with a smooth tone that she normally would use back home. 'And I feel that with you," she added sheepishly.
Out of the corner of her eye, Lucia noticed how his grip became slightly more possessive as he asked her to dance with him. "It would most certainly be an honor," she replied shyly asshe placed her free hand on his shoulder ready to follow his lead to the music.

Lucre's lips curved into a smile, though that plainly would not be seen beneath his mask. He would have been embarassed to let her see his face beneath this mask at that moment, anyway. Even though he opted to change the subject, she deigned to explain to him the reason she'd let him keep such a gem.
And I feel that with you.
A connection, she says. Sure, they had a lot to go off of each other to be initially intrigued with one another, but was that really reason enough to gift him with something so......special? They had only just met. If even Lucre was feeling this unsure about it, then there must have been something wrong. Not with Lucia, necessarily, but.......maybe it was him? He had no reason to steer away from her, quite the opposite. He found himself wanting to run in her direction as hard as he could, and he had to stiffle the urge to tackle her when he saw her moments ago. So then, it was at least established that the two liked each other and wanted to get closer to one another. Was it okay to do this, though?
A thought had then occured to him: Maybe it was time he stopped second-guessing himself. It was the reason he went through so many girls in the past, with so little regard to what their feelings on the issue were. All he cared about was his own indulgence, and cared not for how the others were left afterwards. The proof was in the pudding; Lucre couldn't even remember all the girls whom he had swooned since arriving at FFU. And Lucia seriously trusted him this much? He had to make sure he was ready to invest in such a commitment. He had to know where the two stood.
But hold, this was not a time to let his thoughts go into disaray. Losing himself for but a moment in his thoughts, Lucre returned to his senses when he felt the gentle touch of Lucia's gloved hand upon his shoulder, and her gentle words of consent to his dance. Taking his free hand and resting it upon her full, soft waist, Lucre led her to the building rhythm of the waltz that began to encircle the entire Dance Hall.

Through out the dance, Lucia couldn't help but regret telling him her reason for giving him the pendent. Oh how she wished she could turn back time so she never said that she felt a connection with him. Her timid nature was back ten-fold, as she kept herself from locking eyes with him.
"I'm sorry," she whispered as she closed her eyes to keep herself from tearing up. "I shouldn't have said that. Especially when we had only just met," she continued her voice growing more weak by the word. Sure she has had a long string of bad relationships, but when she saw him, she seemed to have forgotten all about them. Well until that moment.
She silently wished for the song to end so how close they were wouldn't entice her to fall even farther.

"Lucia, its okay. I'm glad you told me what was on your mind, rather than leaving it up to me to piece things together. These things aren't always easy to go about when you're going on guesswork." Lucre was surprisingly nimble on his feet despite his focus being split on conversing and comforting Lucia. He still kept the pace of their rhythm, though their footwork had decreased in speed so that she would at least be able to absorb his words and keep up at the same time.
"See, I don't know what kind of relationships you've gone through in the past. And as you've maybe guessed, I've kept a lousy record of all the relations I've involved myself in, even in this past year of school." with a twirl here, finishing with a dip, he then continued to speak before resuming dance with Lucia once more. "I never did anything deep with any of the ones I was not serious about. But in the same breath, my incoriagable flirting has lead to a lot of girls having their hearts ripped up by my careless actions. And well....." as the song ended, he paused with his partner in the middle of the floor. His hand left her waist hesitantly, plucking his mask and sliding it up his forhead and over his slicked back bangs.
"Lucia, I seriously am trying to be a different person now from what I was. The person that cared so little about the feelings of others. The child that only cared about indulging his own satiation of boredom. You're special enough to me, Lucia, that I would not allow you to go any further with me without knowing at least that much about myself. If you're willing to be just a little patient with me for a bit and bear with me....." he closed the distance between them, and wrapped his arms around her. He rested his head on her shoulder and exhaled a bit before finishing.
".....Then I would like to let this next year mark the beginning of something true. Something beautiful. Something......with you, maybe? If you're alright with that." there was so much fear of rejection in Lucre's voice as he spoke. To think that she probably saw him as one of the worst fiends she'd ever want to avoid. But then, it was for the best if this stranger at least got a look at one of the uglier aspects of himself, right then and there.

Listening as he explained his old ways, Lucia was shocked beyond belief. A heart breaker? Him? she thought as she tried to take in everything he was saying. And the weird thing was, she was willing to put that behind them. Sure she a bit skiddish now, but in all honesty she really didn't care.
"Look Lucre, everyone has done something that they have regretted in the past," she smiled as she removed her mask and looked up at him. "And I'm taking your word that you are trying to change your old ways. And I am more than willing to be patient and help you along the way," she continued tenderly.
Then I would like to let this next year mark the beginning of something true. Something beautiful. Something......with you, maybe? If you're alright with that.
No matter what he said before, and no matter what her mind was telling her, she wanted to say yes to whatever he was asking. Is he asking me out? she asked herself as she gave a quiet nod. "Of course I'm alright about it," she laughed as she reached up and placed her hand on his cheek.

This time, Lucre couldn't keep his usual neautral disposition. For the first time in a long time, he was happy. Like, giddishly happy. Lucia was a step up more understanding and patient than he expected her to. Nothing against her personal character, but lots of girls just did not want to risk going through any pain that would accompany honest confessions like his. However, in the case of this Dutch noblelady, he found himself wanting to change his usual behavior. And to do that, he was going to have to be straight with her. Tell her all the good and bad things about himself. Sure, he could just throw a tarp on that part of himself. It might not resurface, but as long as the two of them went to this school, he was always going to be faced with reminders of his past behavior in the faces of over a dozen females.
He didn't know enough about her just yet, but he was starting to see more and more how much better she was than most, if not for the simplest reasons. Lucia was so sweet, understanding, and.......well, really sexy. Though she was not trying as hard as other women do, it was simply there, her inner beauty radiating with her external appeal. Could it be that this was the one he had pushed his way through so many other girls, just to meet?
The blonde's eyes had been shimmering with enamourment the moment her hand gently rested on his cheek. His hand came back to meet with hers, resting on top of it. He leaned forward, leaned in, as if his emotions had over taken him. Closer, closer to her face he inched as his head tilted. Then his mask slid back down upon his visiage. And his cheek brushed against Lucia's as he spoke again.

As his face came closer to hers, Lucia's eyes widened slightly as a blush came to her porcelain cheeks. But instead of what she was guessing, his mask had slid down once more as his cheek brushed against her own. And with a gentle question, she looked down sheepishly letting her mask fall before her eyes. Tease she mused to herself as she looked up at him through her bangs and smirked. "I guess I could do you the honor," she joked as she raised her head to meet his eyes.
She still found it hard to believe that Lucre, the same one whom welcomed her to Firefox, used to be an incorrigible flirt. Though she had met and dated several that were about the same, she had let her guard down completely around him. Well so much for trying to shelter my heart she sighed mentally as she heard the beginning of a song with a more up-beat tempo.
"Lucre which year are you in?" she asked curiously. Sure she knew what house he was in, but she had no clue as to what year or age he was.

The song that began playing did not sound classical or traditional, but something more modern from the world of muggle music. It seemed like there was no appropriate dance for this song, but it suited Lucre fine. He had a bit of experience in dancing here and there.
Taking her hand, his eyes glinted briefly through the holes in his mask before he strode to a better opening on the floor with Lucia and improvised the steps to the dance as well as he could. Stepping out and sliding towards her, he spinned her once and began talking again.
"I just got done with my sixth year. I'm welcome to continue studying here, but as far as classes go, I'm pretty much done. I took care of most of my magical studies over in Madrid." his movements flowed along with the music rhythm, but his steps slowed down a bit as his interest refocused on just talking to her.
"So what about you, my sweet Hufflepuff? You've probably just started, huh?"
Post by Lucia Highlands on Dec 31, 2007 14:30:33 GMT -5
As they danced, Lucia laughed lightly as she felt herself being spun. She wasn't much of a dancer when it came to more modern music, unless it was of Latin origins. But she guessed that she would have to make like a jazz musician and improv. She listened as Lucre spoke of just finishing up his sixth year. She had to admit she was a bit sad about it, and she hoped she could see him after he graduated.
So what about you, my sweet Hufflepuff? You've probably just started, huh?
"Not really love, it's only going to be my second semester of my sixth year," she shrugged.

"Goodness, you're just about done! Well I'm really happy for you, Lucia. What are your plans after school is finished?" Lucre was indeed excited. Honestly, he was not sure if he wanted to stay in Spain forever, even if he had a beautiful girlfriend to wait on. However, it seemed she just had a little over a year, or less than that if she really piled on the classes, before she'd be in the same graduated level as Lucre. That definitely changed things for him, and learning such an exciting aspect only made him want to know that much more about her.
These happy musings flowed through his mind as he spinned tirelessly upon the dance floor with his new and cherished friend. With each passing second he felt her becoming less of a mere friend and a deeper relationship growing between them. The way these new acquaintances had vested so much trust in each other so quickly, Lucre was suddenly not so scared of it anymore. For he knew that Lucia was every bit on edge now as he was about the future. But at the same time, it was so exciting. He now wanted change more than he ever had in his life, and he wanted to do it all for her, as well as himself.
The song came to a sterling end, and the two came to the consession stand, to cool off with some New Year's drink.
"So then, what would you like?" he panted, a little short on breath and the mask once more on top of his noggin.
Post by Lucia Highlands on Dec 31, 2007 16:39:27 GMT -5
"Well I was thinking about becoming an Auror," she smiled weakly. "But I doubt I have what it takes. I'm a wimp," she muttered looking down. Shaking off the negative feelings, Lucia looked up at Lucre. "What about you? What are your plans?" she asked curiously. Even though she had a year and a half to go, she wasn't quite sure as to what would happen between them. Would he wait or would he just go on with his life?
The song came to an end at last as she followed him to the concessions. She turned her mask so it rested behind her head. Lucia heard him ask what she wanted. "Just a glass of water please," she replied sheepishly.
