Remember that one big announcement Az put up - here?
It got us really fired up, made the site really awesome again. Well a lot of ideas for advertisement and plots got thrown around. A lot of good points were made, a lot of bad points were made. I won't distinguish between the two, but one point that Cealla brought up that I actually thought was pretty dead on was that a lot of our site decisions are made by an oligarchy of people on MSN who join in big chats with me and/or Azrael and argue. Inevitably, if they can convince one of us, they win.
And of course, the rest of the site is left going 'what? why is [this huge board-changing thing] suddenly here? What happened?' and they can look around the Muggle World, hell, they can even check In Character threads hoping for an answer to all of this, and they can't find any answer to what's going on. If it's that big, someone might put up a thread in the muggle world saying 'what's going on?' and it gets answered with 'haha yeah we decided that in MSN too bad you're not in on it,' and if it's not that big, it just gets avoided.
People move on.
Well I've decided to REPLACE the MSN decision making system with Site Decisions threads, right here in the Student Government board on the site. This way, every member, from the oldest oldie to the newest newbie can say 'I don't like this' and 'wat is going on in this thred gaiz' and it is EQUALLY valid. Ultimately, what me and Azrael agree on decides what's actually going to happen, but everybody should have a chance to argue for or against what they want to happen equally.
Cool? Okay, so here's the first SITE DECISION!!!
Roan came to me this morning and suggested that we get rid of the one Drakborough mega-board with its many sub-boards and make 'Drakborough' into a category apart from The Grounds wherein there's lots of boards like 'Town Square' and 'Residential Area' and so forth.
Talon's Current Position: AGAINST
The site's most beloved characters are graduated adults or forsaken creatures, and Drakborough and Triangle Tunnel are the only real places of wizard society on the boards. Making more boards for adults would allow for more places to post rather than just these two boards, and could allow for more focused plots on the adult characters/monsters who are apart from the school.
Why I am against this: First off, the site is called Firefox University. The story of the site is about the school. The characters who graduate who choose to stick around generally take up residence in Drakborough and become secondary characters compared to the residents of the school upon which the site is set around. An attempt from MH to make a site more focused on adult wizards [pure 'sorcerers'] (not disregarding the school aspect, but merely making adult wizards the more central characters) and the monsters resulted in Four Points Academy. Never heard of it? Exactly. Orca can vouch for me on just how well that went over.
I could make that my sole point and it would be undeniably valid. But I just know people would rage if I didn't make more points.
So secondly, what would having more boards in Drakborough do to help besides putting more emphasis on the adults? The reason the sub-boards exist is so that people can enter shops and be served, and people who run the stores can attend to them quickly. Everybody is permitted to start their own store, or start their own...anything in Drakborough. All they have to do is just message me and tell me 'I want to start up [X]!' If it makes sense, it's good to go. But if you want a thread in Drakborough, what would the difference be between posting in 'Town Square' and just posting in Drakborough saying 'In the Town Square, adult wizard sat on a park bench reading the newspaper'?
To just wrap that point up, it just seems like the whole point of this is not to allow more places to post, but to have more Adult Wizard stuff clearly visible on the main page, thus drawing more emphasis to the adult wizard aspect of the site instead of the school which the site is based around.
By the time your character is graduated or a stable, developed character, you should be fine with the idea of just posting in one or two places for a general reason for your character. As newbies, the freedom of running around to different boards is necessary. It's why more 'mature' roleplaying sites can sometimes just have one thread on a forum to signify the entire game.
Those are two good points for now, I think. Your turn, FFU.
(oh, and as if it needs to be said, if you are fortunate enough to possess my MSN address, DO NOT TALK TO ME ABOUT THIS ON MSN! It completely defeats the point!)
