When the click first went off, Talon let out a sigh of relief. Perhaps it was a totally random combination of Zodiac signs? Well, either way, the future Headmaster had gotten the first one right. Before he had a chance to move the dial to a second symbol, Yamaroshi jumped in and decided to take his chances. The Lightning Elementalist saw no reason why not.
Until the device made a sickening crunch sound, and began to shift back to its original position.
Before the future Headmaster could consider the consequences of his actions, he felt the Earth fall out beneath him and the entire room around them change. In a few moments, the two of them were standing - quite clearly, though it felt a little strange as it lacked a rushing wind - atop a steep mountain. Talon looked around, and then heard an enormous crash from the top of the mountain.
A stampede of Aurochs, ancient bulls, began to run down from the peak of the mountain, being chased by boulders the size of houses.

Yamaroshi had expecting for the device to either click or for nothing to happen. The sudden disappearance of the earth beneath the two wizards took him off guard. For a moment he panicked, thinking perhaps he had made a major mistake, and that their journey might end at that moment.
The thought did not last however, because he was surprised again by the sudden change in scenery. He was stunned for a moment. It was extremely familiar: this was the same place he was sent to when he opened the book Taurus for the first time. The only difference was that Talon was standing next to him. He heard the familiar bang and looked up the mountain as the aurochs were being chased by the same boulders as they had been those months ago.
"Umm...don't worry Talon, I got this. Terrae Stalagmite!" he shouted as he drew is wand and waved it at the oncoming stampede. The earth just beneath them cracked, and large, sharp objects formed and propelled themselves into the bodies of the aurochs, stopping them in their tracks. They were quickly overrun by the boulders, at which Yamaroshi pointed his wand, and with a few simple flicks, each one crumbled into smaller, far less threatening pebbles no larger than a grasshopper. The pebbles barely rolled past the two men before they found themselves in the zodiac chamber once again.
"That was the thing I had to do when I opened Taurus."

It all rushed by Talon very quickly. One moment he wasn't sure exactly how to react to this sudden situation, and the next he was out of it. Lucky for him he had brought Yamaroshi along - if he hadn't, he would be dead right now. Dead...in another world, somewhere in the past. That would've been one hell of a paradox.
Looking at Yamaroshi, a smile appeared on the future Headmaster's face. "Thank you," he said, and then looked back at the device - which had reappeared after the trial had ended. "I'm almost certain now that the chamber is beyond, if this lock draws its power directly from the Books. I can also say that we can expect to face something rather similar if we don't figure it out again."
After switching the lock back to Virgo and hearing the click again, Talon shifted the device to the next symbol he thought of...Aquarius.

When the dial reached Aquarius, rather than a click, an odd, wet, squelching sound came from the device. Slowly the lock slid back to its neutral position.

Talon heard the squelching noise and felt a sick feeling in his gut. What were they to face now? Suddenly, Talon felt himself drowning...somewhere out at sea. He could hardly swim, for some reason, even though he knew in his brain he could do so easily. He looked around for Yamaroshi but couldn't find him anywhere.
"Swim! Come on, you can do it!"
The future Headmaster could hear the voice telling him to do so, but for some reason he found it incredibly difficult to comply. He flailed his arms everywhere, gurgling and trying to tread water, but he just...just couldn't. "Yamaroshi!" He said, and heard his voice much higher in pitch.
Talon was a little blonde haired child, around age 6, desperately trying to swim.

As Talon moved the device towards Aquarius, Yamaroshi's breath suddenly stopped. He didn't want to deal with that moment again. But it was inevitable. The scene around him changed until he was a ten year old boy sitting at home in front of the television, his mom yelling at him to mow the lawn. Before she could finish, however, he stood up and said, "I was just about to do it!"
He ran outside and the ground changed into a wide open sea as it had before, leaving the ten year old form of Yamaroshi alone in a dingy. Alone. Where was Talon? Had he somehow been left behind? But that did not make sense, as he was the one to move the device. Well, there was no point in worrying about it. He quickly abandoned the dingy, and his twenty year old form was restored. Soon after, the ocean went wild as it had before. He was quick to use his earth magic to make a massive gash in the land to create a shock wave in the opposite direction of the waves. It had worked, but not as well as it had when he opened the book before. The waves were either more stubborn or he did not create enough of an earthquake. Still, it slowed the waves even more. But it was then that Yamaroshi realized that he would not even need earth magic to save him. This was, after all, a trial of water magic. He began waving his hands against the crashing waves, in an attempt to slow them. This slowed the waves, but also caused him to fall beneath the water. He struggled back to the surface, and with another wave of his arm, what was left of the gigantic waves dissipated. This lawn had been mowed.

The future Headmaster struggled against the waves of the sea, gasping for air as he felt himself unable to fight the pull of gravity. He couldn't keep this up forever, and clearly Yamaroshi was no longer with him. Perhaps this was when he died, in another world, as a child, in the past. That would be an even worse paradox than getting trampled by legendary bulls.
"I...I can't do it! Save me!" The little boy shouted as loudly as he could.
"Then who would save me? If you cannot save yourself, who will you save?"
That voice was one that Talon hadn't heard in twelve years, but existed deep down in his heart all of his life. The comforting, powerful voice of Sciezen Windwaltz, Talon's stepfather - the man who had raised him, loved him, and taught him to be everything he was. This...experience he was having...it could possibly have happened, once. Some kind of twisted recollection of a forgotten memory sealed away in the confines of his heart.
The Books of Balance had a way of doing that.
"You're...you're right Dad," said Talon aloud, and pushed his hands down. He felt his little body sink below the waves...he felt the water rushing into his ears and the pressure pushing him downward. Below, to the deepest part of the ocean. If this was, in fact, an ocean, and not just an endless sea of death.
"F..." bubbles spilled from the boy's mouth, "FLABRA!" He shouted, and suddenly he had returned to his adult form, pushing himself out of the water and into the air with a mighty gust of wind magic. Before the future Headmaster could get a look around that mysterious world that the trial of Aquarius had created, however, he was once again standing in front of the device - pointed at its neutral area - he looked to Yamaroshi next to him, wondering what trial he had faced...if any.
'I wish I could've seen your face again, Dad,' thought Talon to himself, before switching the device back to Virgo. "Want to take another crack at it, then?" He asked the Earth Elementalist.

Yamaroshi waited for a short time, sitting in the sea the trial of Aquarius had created for him, wondering why it did not drain as it had the last time he had taken the trial.
Before long, he was once again in the room in front of the device, standing next to Talon.
Want to take another crack at it? Talon asked him. "Might as well," replied Yamaroshi absentmindedly. He was not entirely sure what had happened. Had Talon faced the same trial? Perhaps a relative of his had told him to mow the lawn. But that wouldn't have made sense because Talon had known he was a wizard all his life. He was not sure why, but he decided not to ask.
"My turn then," he said, as he grabbed the device. He shifted it so it nearly faced Scorpio, but remembered how he had barely survived the ordeal the first time. If he chose it he would have to warn Talon about the impending danger, which would mean he'd have to explain about Orifiel, and the deal he made in exchange for a minute with the book.

When the dial finally reached Leo, nothing happened for two seconds. When the quiet moments had passed, a resounding 'click' echoed through what seemed like the very door itself.
Post by Talon Windwaltz on Feb 26, 2009 22:41:27 GMT -5
Talon took a deep sign of relief when he heard the clicking noise from the door after Leo had been selected. The future Headmaster could only imagine what kind of horror could've been in store for them if Yamaroshi had been wrong. But that moment had passed, and now it lay in the Lightning Mage's hands to select the third - and presumably final - sign.
His eyes scanned the device, the pointer placed on the sign that represented Leo, his heart racing as he knew the punishment for choosing wrong. His first thought went to Sagittarius, because he had faced that trial before - but it had been so surreal, not unlike the one he had just faced by Aquarius. How could he lead Yamaroshi into that?
Then his mind turned to a darker figure, one whose family line itself took the name of this sign. "Alright, here we go," he said, and turned the dial to face Scorpio.

As the dial was turned to 'Scorpio', rather than just one 'click', what seemed like a thousand clacks started to echo throughout the chamber, as if a thousand claws were snapping at each other, over and over again....

Because it wasn't the clicking of the door that greeted the Elementalists - it was an enormous Scorpion. Both Talon and Yamaroshi found themselves in a deep underground cavern, inhabited by the monstrous avatar of the Earth Book of Destruction. The Headmaster drew his wand at once.
Post by Yamaroshi Riel on Feb 27, 2009 2:45:19 GMT -5
Yamaroshi grinned widely when he heard the click after he moved the device, but it vanished as Talon's hand pointed the device to Scorpio. When he heard the noise from the device, his breath paused. He knew what was in store for the two men.
And it was not long before it appeared before them; the scorpion so large that the height of one of its claws was twice that of Yamaroshi's height. The fact that Talon was there next to him was some comfort, but Yamaroshi couldn't help but think Talon's lightning attacks would be similar to a the small static shock one gets when one touches something after rubbing his feet on a shaggy carpet.
Not wasting any time, Yamaroshi disapparated and reappeared several metres away from the scorpion, facing its left side. Terrae Stalagmite, shouted the elementalist. Several cracks appeared beneath the joints of the scorpion's body and legs, and much larger versions of the same spikes he had used against the bulls thrust out of the ground and into the bases of the scorpion's legs, with the intention of taking them off.
He then apparated to the other side and proceeded to do the same to its other set of legs. If all went well, it would no longer be able to move.

Yamaroshi immediately went into battle against the Earth's wrath, taking it upon himself to quench the anger of his own element. He fought the arachnid with such grace that it seemed to Talon that this was something he had already done before. The future Headmaster realized what the Earth Elementalist was doing - Yamaroshi had managed to pin the legs of the monster to the ground with his stalagmites.
Seeing the creature writhing and trying to break free, the Headmaster decided to put it out of its misery - and give the two of them another chance at the device. Clearly, this trap was not intended for Elementalists, as so far this had been relatively lacking in threat.
Or was it, and Talon simply didn't know, that these trials simply weren't new to either of them?
"Pyrus Totalus!" The future Headmaster summoned, and a small ball of fire swirled into being at the tip of his erect wand. Swinging his weapon like a fishing rod, he threw the miniscule ember at the monster, where, upon impact, it erupted into a holocaust of flame. An enormous, horrid shriek sounded from the Scorpion as it slowly and miserably burned to death.
If it were a real Scorpion, and not just an Elemental creation, Talon would definitely have PETA on his ass.

Yamaroshi had been expecting a massive zap from the end of Talon's wand, but instead the headmaster invoked a ball of fire, which quickly erupted and engulfed the monster. Clearly the boy had underestimated his former mentor. The scorpion could not retaliate, as it was pinned by Yamaroshi's previous attack. Still, it might not have been impossible for the arachnid to escape and go after Talon, who was a more obvious target than Yamaroshi.
Terrae Stalagmite! shouted Yamaroshi, as more spikes were launched from the ground into the creature's underbelly in an effort to keep it incapacitated.
It was not long before the trial ended, and the two were once again in front of the device. It was a good thing too. The smoke was building up quickly from Talon's attack.
Talon had chosen that trial, so it was Yamaroshi's turn. He placed his hand on the device and shifted it to face Aires. If this was not the correct choice, at least he would discover one of the trials he would never otherwise get to see.
