It was only then that Talon realized he hadn't actually explained to Yamaroshi what exactly was going on - it was a good thing he had brought it up, or else the future Headmaster might've just led him to the gates of the Library without even remembering that his companion was clueless. "Oh, yes, well, come with me. I don't want anyone spying in our business..." Talon led the other man to a nearby alley, and after checking several times to make sure nobody was around, he pulled his wand from the inside of his robe. "Diffindo, diffindo, diffindo..." He whispered again and again, slicing his thick coverings to pieces.
Talon wrapped the remains of his robe around himself in the like of an Egyptian's clothing. He kept his chest bare, allowing himself to perspire under the flaming star, but below his waist was covered by the purple linings of his former regalia. For the first time, the silver medallion that Talon frequently hung around his neck was not shrouded - the chromium disc that held only the simple engraving of a fire.
"I recommend you do the same, Yama, just for future reference - this heat will kill you if you don't."

Finally, more progress! Or there would be very soon, once they got to where they were going.
When they got to the alleyway, however, this illusion was brought to an end. Or so it seemed. What Yamaroshi thought would be a full, detailed explanation as to their situation suddenly appeared to be a private strip show, though it was quickly evident what the purpose of it was. It was hot. Yamaroshi could not deny that. He could only expect that Talon would ask him to do the same, which he did.
Yamaroshi opened his mouth and took a deep breath in to speak, then looked down, his mouth still open. He didn't want to tear his clothes to pieces, and more than that, well...he didn't want to walk around half naked.
He tried to remember every class he had ever been in since the first day of his first year at wizardry school. He reached the end without thinking of a single spell that could make the heat more bearable.
"I think I'll pass," he said finally. Then, finding an excuse, he reached into his robe/coat and lifted the top of a book out so Talon could see it. It was Taurus. "anyways, if I tear up my clothes, I won't have anywhere to put this," he said before putting it away and closing his robe. "Think I'll manage."
Actually, Yamaroshi was not entirely sure he would.

Talon's confusion at Yamaroshi's unwillingness to cut up his clothing was well understood by both parties - how could anyone want to walk around in wizards' clothing in the middle of an Egyptian city? Sea breeze was one thing, but it wasn't enough to cool the intense African sun. However, when Yamaroshi took out Taurus and displayed it to Talon, the future Headmaster was a bit more lenient on his former pupil...until he realized what exactly it was the Earth Mage was holding.
"Keep that away! Do not, the entire time we're here, ever let anyone see that in your possession. You should not have brought it, but then again it isn't really your fault as I had no idea you still had it on you and you didn't even know where we were going. Right, well, I should explain that." So Talon, half-dressed and standing in a deserted alleyway 2000 years ago, finally opened up to tell his companion where they were and why.
"A while ago I sought out to seek the Zodiac books on my own. You know this, as that is why I had three of them in my possession before this whole race to find them began. Along with those three, I also found a great deal of information on their origin and, most importantly, their downfall. That is to say, why they're scattered across the world. They were once all...well, right here. In Alexandria. 2000 years ago...or should I say...now? As that is where we are, thanks to Javed the Djinn's power...two thousand years before our present time, in a foreign country. You know of the library that was there - here - right? The Library of Alexandria? That is where they kept them, in a hidden place known as the 'Zodiac Chamber.' All twelve of them are there, right now, hidden away from the world.
The reason why I brought us here was because no matter how hard I searched for them - and selfishly, I sought for them most harshly out of all of them due to them being of my element - I could never find the books that corresponded to the element of Air. The only thing close to them I found was a scripture written by a name named Theophilus the Elder, who wrote that he himself destroyed the Library of Alexandria for the sole purpose of ridding the world of the books. He will destroy them on this night. I brought us here to follow him into the Zodiac Chamber, and possibly figure out the fate of those three books that have eluded my search."

Yamaroshi flinched when Talon told him not to show the book. Of course he wasn't supposed to show it. He always kept it hidden in his robe or in his hole so the nephilim wouldn't spot it. Yamaroshi figured that this must be why Talon was angry when he brought it out.
But he was corrected when Talon finally explained. the situation. They had gone back in time, apparently. Now Yamaroshi remembered. Talon had asked the genie to take them back to some time AD, and apparently it worked.
The whole thing seemed so careless. Talon had brought them here before Yamaroshi knew what was going on. There was apparently no plan, and the consequences of anything going wrong at all were immense. If a single pebble was out of place, history could take an entirely different course.
Though there were several things he could have said, he chose only to say, "This seems a bit risky."
Post by Talon Windwaltz on Apr 8, 2008 23:56:38 GMT -5
Talon did not expect Yamaroshi to be so calm about the whole situation. Undoubtedly his former pupil was riddled with doubt about their mission, but none the less he knew if he himself were put in this same place [and time] he would be more demanding of answers and more chastising of whoever had been so foolish. Still, the Earth Mage gave no reason for the Lightning Mage to explain himself, beyond the simple statement that it was risky.
"Yes, it is, and it's unlike me to go charging into something like this without a plan," Talon decided to reprimand himself, since his companion seemed to be failing at doing so, "but there really was no time to plan anything out. You cannot doubt the power that the Nephilim wield, Yamaroshi, and how much drive they have to collect all twelve of these books. They've been waiting all their lives for one chance to grasp at some kind of revenge against the God who cursed them, and this...well, might be it."

All Yamaroshi could manage this time was a nod. From what he understood, the nephilim were close to getting the books, and if they did, it would be worse than if Talon and Yamaroshi caused a paradox, thus causing some sort of catastrophe...or something.
"Okay," Yamaroshi said. The boy wasn't sure if he was trying to contain his frustration or if he simply couldn't voice his thoughts. Anyways, it was probably too late to turn back. Besides, if it meant eventually learning about the zodiac books, that was okay, even if Yamaroshi could never use wind magic.
"So what do we do for now?", he asked. "Are we going to have to wait until nighttime?"
An older man hurriedly ran past as Yamaroshi and Talon discussed their situation in the alleyway. "Terrible. Truly terrible!" He squeaked as he rushed past buildings, "Ohh, Terra must certainly hear about this. Oh, this is truly terrible. Important and terrible!" As he passed them, he realized that one of them was wearing unusual clothes for around here. He quickly stopped, and wheeled around, poking his head back into the alleyway. A couple of new people wasn't a rare find, but Feronius was a kindly old man, and so he stopped to help these two strangers. "Oh, my. Why hello there! I almost missed you in my rush. Are you new here, young men? Is there anything I can help you with?"
As he began talking, he brushed off his clothes, straightened them out, and stepped around the corner. "Well, that certainly is a strange necklace you have there, Mr... Oh, my! I've forgotten to introduce myself! Feronius, Feronius Furens! And you are, young men?" His eyes closed as he introduced himself, and he gestured kindly at the two before him, light shining off of the rather large bald spot on top of his head...

"Perhaps we shall -" Talon was interrupted in his response to Yamaroshi by the sudden appearance of another, older gentleman. This man, with bald head and beard, seemed quite intrigued by both of them and made the future Headmaster's heart sink deep within his chest. Would a conversation with a person from the past change everything? Would this man perhaps save people or have children or influence people or was he already heading to do that and now that he'd stopped to talk to them everything was totally ruined forever?
Nah - the man was far beyond his years, figured Talon finally. Old people never did anything. Furthermore he was speaking in a very Greek dialect of Latin, as was common for this part of Egypt, that the Elementalist could only barely understand. For all his years studying the ancient languages of wizards and muggles, it never really did him much use when it came to conversation. After all, who would figure they'd be having small talk with someone millenia ago! Furthermore, Talon would have to somehow explain his yellow colored hair, and the presence of Yamaroshi who didn't understand Latin at all, or their strange names.
"My name," responded Talon in Latin, "Is Gaius Junius Talon. I am a former slave to the famous family in Rome, a descendant of barbarians from the Northern lands, who was freed from servitude for my immense favor to both my family and the Emperor." He figured that was a common enough story, especially considering the Christians were just about emerging at this time period and people were freeing their slaves left and right. "And this," Talon pointed to Yamaroshi, "is my slave, Gaius Junius Yamar...axus. He's Persian. From the orient. A fine boy he is, very strong, capable of a great many things, but he knows very little to no Latin. Poor boy only knows his own language, which I know a bit of myself."
At this point he turned to Yamaroshi and muttered to him in English, "I told him you're my slave. Forgive me later, but play the role for now and we won't have any trouble." Talon returned his attention to Feronius, "...anyhow, we have only just arrived in Alexandria from Within Her Motherly Walls, and we are greatly interested in finding the famous Library. Would you perhaps know where it is?"

Yamaroshi didn't think so much of the man who appeared before Talon and him. The thought that making small talk with this old man could cause the future to change did not occur to Yamaroshi. The unfortunate thing was, Yamaroshi did not even know what language this man was speaking, let alone how to speak it. It was fortunate, however, that Talon could speak this language.
At least until he became Talon's slave. Yamaroshi tried not to look surprised, so as not to arouse suspiscion in the man in front of him. As long as he wouldn't have to wait on Talon or anything like that, it would be fine.
He simply nodded to the man. At least he would not have to do any talking. He could leave that to Talon.
Something about what the man had said bothered Feronius, but he couldn't quite place his finger on it. Maybe it was the way he talked , but that was explained by his claimed heritage. Feronius smiled kindly at them as they talked, but as soon as Talon finished asking about the library, his cheery smile turned to a worried frown.
"The library? I'm sorry, but do you mean our Library of Alexandria? Erm... Well..." He hesitated a moment, and then became cheery once more, "I don't see the harm in it! I happened to be heading there, myself! Just follow me. It's right over here."
With that, he took off, not even waiting for the two behind him to follow. He may have been old, but it didn't seem to effect his mobility, as he moved with amazing speed (for an old man, at least), in a direct line toward the library, which wasn't actually that far off from the place where the three had been conversing.
Turning around for but a second to state what should have been obvious, "Here it is!," he darted into the doorway, and into another corridor just inside. He continued down through a few more corridors, until he was sure they weren't following. He would have to hurry and get to Terra...
"Where is Feronius," Terra idly muttered running her slender fingers down the spine of an old book. She spoke at nothing because nothing was around her. Nothing but books of course. It was the most peaceful room in whole of Alexandria, or at least that was Terra opinion. She was completely at home in the library. Even though she had important duties to fulfill, she could still find time in her day to sit down and relax.
Now was one of those times.
Terra sifted through a book in some foreign language, sea green eyes dancing atop every line. All was well. Hmm, almost. Terra heard a familiar stride, the sound of something old, dirty, and crazy galloping her way. Terra had her time to zone and she was ready for her ancient companion. No doubt running at full speed to tell her the newest fruit price spike, or something equally as useless.
She was feeling polite. Terra gently closed her book and set it on the table from which she read. The foot step grew closer. All she had to do was wait for him to arrive. He was fast for his age... but not fast enough for her patience. The Library of Alexandria was a large place, and its echoes were deceiving. Terra rested her hand on the skirt of her emerald robes. There were no sleeves and she wore gold jewelry fitted with glass beads. Then she proceeded to lean against her table and wait.
Terra sighed running her fingers through her inky hair, "Hurry," she whispered.
"Trouble! Trouble! Miss Titania, oh! They're here to break it! Oh, they'll burn it, I fear! Oh, the trouble!" Feronius burst into the room where Terra had been resting, hoping she would be there, "Oh, my! Oh my! This is terrible! We should do something! Oh, what should we do!" He had began rambling in a very poorly-constructed manner, seemingly expecting Terra to understand. He ran up to her, and went to grab her, missing, and falling on the floor, face first, as he screamed, "We have to do so-AAH!!!" He landed with a loud thud, and laid there a moment before getting back to his feet, "We have to do something!"

As Feronius Furens took off, Talon headed after him. He didn't even wait for Yamaroshi for the first few minutes, until he remembered that if he went alone without the Earth Mage, he might be in a bit of trouble. For one, he had no idea if the other wizard could back without him, for two, he knew Yamaroshi did not speak Latin, and for three, he had heard legends of some kind of 'security device' on the door to the Chamber, so he wanted both of them there to see if it would help.
The Headmaster turned to wait for Yamaroshi, and once the Earth Mage had caught up, he continued his charge after the elderly wizard. When they arrived at the library of Alexandria, the crazy old man stormed inside and ran off to find someone...leaving the two Elementalists alone in the root of their search. "We're here," he said in English, turning to Yamaroshi. "Now we have to find the Zodiac Chamber..."
He walked inside, and immediately felt his heart give a great leap. There were books everywhere! Big books, little books, legendary books, completely unknown books. Books that would all suffer a terrible end later that day, if history were to play out as it already had. As much as Talon enjoyed this, however, it slowly became apparent to him that their search was to become all the worse. "...if we can find it, that is."

All Yamaroshi could do was stand there, frustrated. He could not understand anything the two men were saying. Perhaps it was for the better. If he could not communicate with the locals, he might have less of a chance of causing some sort of paradox.
Before he could know what was going on, the man Talon was talking to took off, and Talon along with him. Yamaroshi followed, and with every step felt weaker and weaker. Talon may well have been right; it certainly felt like the heat would kill him. He eventually gave up on spitting out the sweat that kept making its way into his mouth. He was more and more tempted to do what Talon did with his clothes, but he had to hide Taurus.
His hopes rose when the approached the library of Alexandria. Perhaps there was some sort of spell on it to keep people cool, but as he walked in he was disappointed. It was just as hot inside as it was outside, and he would have to endure it all day long.
When Talon spoke to him, all he could was look and nod, his face red and soaking with sweat as he slouched and panted. When Talon finished speaking he could only tilt his head back and sigh. "I think this is going to be a long day," he said quietly.

And it was a long day. In fact, the day lasted three months.
***
"Quickly Yama!" cried Talon as he called for his companion to follow him as he chased Theophilus into the the Library. It was only a matter of time before the legendary wizard set fire to the building and brought an end to such a vast collection of literature. The Headmaster felt an evil tang at his heart, a feeling that if he only stopped him now, this place would never go...so much knowledge that would still remain...
But then what of the dark ages? What of civilization as a whole? Sure it might be better, but at what cost? A shudder went up his spine. No, it was Theophilus's destiny to destroy this place, and not succeed in his mission. It was Talon and Yamaroshi's destiny to grab those three books and return them to the present.
