It was the day of the dance. All of the hard work and preparations the Staff of Firefox had gone through to get everything up and running had finally come to fruition. The Feasting Hall looked absolutely spectacular. The room was lit only by the peaceful light coming off of the dance floor, resembling silver ice, which took up the entire space between the Headmaster’s podium and the doorway. The tables had been transfigured into smaller and multiple versions of themselves for people to sit and eat between dances. The ceiling, usually a magical painting of peace, was now bewitched to look like a shining night sky speckled with stars. Magically drawn golden lines linked the stars, creating a sea of constellations.
On the raised platform at the end of the hall the Staff table remained totally intact, the University’s Professors garbed in their own finest dress robes. Some had decided to attend the dance together, and others had invited men and women with them that the students would never have met before. Some had even decided to go alone. Behind the Staff Table were three silver banners whose color matched the dance floor, portraying a Serpent in Green.
The students and their dates made their way into the Feasting Hall, their eyes lighting up with awe at the incredible enchantments in place. Some simply took the time to gaze at the constellations above, showing their dates how much (or how little) they knew about Astronomy. Others tried to get onto the dance floor really fast, but found that they couldn’t get past the boundary of the silver light just yet. The rest sat down at various tables, waiting for the Headmaster to make his speech and for the dance to begin.
They knew he would. He always did, anyhow.
Those that had sat down weren’t disappointed. Soon after the major swarm of students had entered, Professor Roeswood whispered to the Headmaster and he stood up. Talon took his time walking around the length of the Staff Table, either as a dramatic effect or simply because he thought he was the most elegant and creatively dressed out of the Professors. The rest of the Staff, however, didn’t seem to agree at all. Several of them either gasped, laughed, or shook their heads in embarrassment. The rest didn’t even bother saying anything at all. It would become apparent as the Headmaster finished the stretch of table and reached his podium the reason why so many of the Professors were shocked.
Talon was garbed in a wacky tye-dye unbuttoned pinstripe suit jacket over a black and white striped shirt. His trousers matched the jacket, but the belt that held the pants up seemed to be made of dragon leather – the only magical part of his get-up. He wasn’t even wearing boots today, just dress shoes. “Greetings, students!” The Headmaster said, glee in his voice, “Welcome to the Start-of-Term Dance, where we can all get our boogie on before classes start! I know my Professors are just as excited as you are!” He glanced at the Professors – some who were completely looking the other direction hoping that no one would associate them with Talon’s get up. “Oh come on,” he said, a mock frown appearing while he still had everyone’s attention, “Everyone knows muggles wear stuff like this to dances, it can’t be that bad.”
His attention returned to the students, “Alright yes, anyhow, hmm, right off the bat. I’d like to welcome you all to another year here at Firefox University, and am very pleased that so many of you have decided to either transfer or begin your time here with us! We look forward to teaching you all we know and hoping you will grow up to be great and powerful wizards!” The Headmaster’s arm moved in an arch from the podium to the silver banners hanging above the Staff Table. “As some of you from last year know, Slytherin was the winner of the House Cup last year, and for that reason we are honoring their victory by having their silver banners hanging tonight! Also…”
A batch of yellow and black cups appeared at each table. “I figure I’ll celebrate Hufflepuff as well, being the first House in goodness knows how long to actually close out the year in negative points!” His smile never left his face as he moved his sweeping arm from the banners to the bottom of the platform on which the podium rested, where an enormous magical phonograph was rising out behind the Divination Professor, Orifiel, who was amidst records and CDs of all sorts. “Also, your Divination Professor Orifiel shall be DJ-ing for this event, or as we have all grown to call him, DJ Fifi.”
His smile widened as he pulled his wand from the inside pocket of his suit jacket and pointed it at the stage where the invisible barrier was present. “Well then, without further ado – LET US BEGIN!” A magical light filled the room, and the dance had begun.
