He hadn't even noticed when he fell asleep, nor had he been woken up by Zephyrus carrying him. He'd slept through the walk down to the lake, being set down in the grass, and he'd continued to sleep for hours afterward. It had been a dreamless sleep, for his mind was too tired to conjure anything up. Nevertheless it had been blissful, laying in that grass by the lake with Zephyrus not far off.
All sleepers must wake eventually, though, and as the sun hit the boy's face just right he began to stir. That light was so warm...no, wait, it was getting a bit hot now. Oh god, now it was burning his eyes even though they were closed! Draven moaned and rolled over, his hand following the motion until it landed on his rosy cheek with a resounding smack.
"Uwah?!"
He sat bolt upright, eyes wide open as he looked around for what had hit him. After seeing nothing but the lake, a few birds in the trees, and Zeph, he let out a long sigh and placed his face in his hands. "Mmmmmph...'Ow long...was I asleeeeeeeeee--" The last word was interrupted by a rather loud yawn adopting the sound of the last vowel he was able to get out.

There was a loud sound, and it had definitely caught Zeph's attention in the silence. He looked over to see a groggy Draven, who had been woken up by it.
"Mmmmmph...'Ow long...was I asleeeeeeeeee--"
"It was around 6:30 when you fell asleep, and it's 11:12 now. Quite a long time, my love. Did you have a good nap? You looked comfortable." Zeph laughed. He hadn't realized how adorable Draven looked when he was just awakened til then. He walked over and laid down next to the eleven year old, and stared at the sky.
"I can't wait till it's warmer out. We should totally come fishing or swimming or whatever. Skip class again. " He had to cover his eyes while staring at the sky, because he'd forgotten exactly how much of an ass the sun was being that day.
"Y'know what? We should stay here til the stars come out. It's been a while since I've laid down and watched the stars. Two years, I think. I was in my second year, and this guy I hung out with got really bored one night, and we snuck out when we were supposed to be studying in the library that night. It was beautiful, too. I think we got lucky too, on that night, since there was a meteor shower. A whole bunch of other people joined us, and I think maybe half the school was all outside watching it. I made so many wishes..."
But not a single one came true, he wanted to add, but he didn't have the heart to.
"I see a kitten in that cloud." He pointed up to a cloud in the sky, chuckling. It was a very ugly, misshapen, creepy looking kitten indeed. But a kitten was a kitten, right?
Even if it looked like cat demon spawn run through with a lawnmover.
"It was around 6:30 when you fell asleep, and it's 11:12 now. Quite a long time, my love. Did you have a good nap? You looked comfortable."
Draven rubbed his eyes. "Mmmhmm...until the bloody sun got in my face." He was totally going to write a letter of complaint to the galaxy for giving his solar system such a damned bright light. It was ridiculous. "At least I feel human again, even if it did take near five hours." "I can't wait till it's warmer out. We should totally come fishing or swimming or whatever. Skip class again. "
That was followed up by a chuckle as Draven laid back in the grass. "You know, I never thought I was the class skipping sort. So long as you're teaching me far more than my teachers, though...I think I can change my ways." Pfft, that wasn't completely true. Even if Zeph ran out of things to teach the boy, he'd still be glad to cut class with him. Today had been great so far, with the exception of the snake and the vomiting.
"Y'know what? We should stay here til the stars come out. It's been a while since I've laid down and watched the stars. Two years, I think. I think we got lucky too, on that night, since there was a meteor shower. A whole bunch of other people joined us, and I think maybe half the school was all outside watching it. I made so many wishes..."
"A meteor shower?!" Draven sat up again, rolling onto his side and propping himself with his elbow. He'd only ever seen pictures of meteor showers, but those pictures had been stunning. He looked up at the sky and tried to predict if there'd be one tonight. Oh, he hoped so.
"I see a kitten in that cloud."
"Hm?" Eyes followed the finger, landing on the incoherent blob of white in the sky. Draven snorted first upon seeing it, then burst out laughing. "You're mad! Completely bonkers! Have you never seen a kitten before?" He pointed at an especially suspect part of the "kitten." "They don't usually have an arse twice the size of their head with five different tails sprouting from it. I reckon that's an octopus that's got something stuck round his middle. See, he's even wiggling about trying to get it off!"
Silly silly boys.

"You know, I never thought I was the class skipping sort. So long as you're teaching me far more than my teachers, though...I think I can change my ways."
"You were gonna learn that stuff soon or later anyways. No time like the present to start learning, though." Zeph laughed. "And skipping class is awesome. More time to do fun things. Less time giving yourself a writer's cramp."
"A meteor shower?!" Draven had propped himself up on both elbows, his eyes nearly glistening. Zeph smiled, nodding. He sat up to stretch.
"Huh?" It was followed by a snort, then fit of laughter."You're mad! Completely bonkers! Have you never seen a kitten before? They don't usually have an arse twice the size of their head with five different tails sprouting from it. I reckon that's an octopus that's got something stuck round his middle. See, he's even wiggling about trying to get it off!"
Zeph began to laugh. He fell onto his back, unable to stop. When his laughs turned into chuckles, and then into girlish giggling did he dare speak.
"It's...a tentacle rape...monster that looks...like demon kitty from...hell..." He said between breaths.
"See, it's even got...those cat ears...that girls like so much." He paused, thinking ."Actually...it's an exact...replica of my stepmother. Looks just as...deadly, too."
He shuddered, wondering what in the hell was up with his family and creepy-looking adults.
He really hoped he wouldn't end up looking like them.
Because he still had nightmares about his older cousin Billy and his cavity-infested mouth.
Ugh.
((That last paragraph of yours had me ROFLing. <33))
Draven was quite pleased with himself for making his boyfriend laugh so hard. There was really only one problem: laughing was contagious, thus Draven was equally incapacitated by a fit of giggles. Zeph's following remarks didn't help matters either. "It's...a tentacle rape...monster that looks...like demon kitty from...hell...See, it's even got...those cat ears...that girls like so much."
Draven held back the laughter just long enough to get another good look at the blob in the sky. Yep, that was definitely some sort of monster alright, and the kitty ears made it ridiculous. Draven snorted, rolling onto his stomach to try and smother the laughs by pressing his face into the ground. Bad idea, really.
"Actually...it's an exact...replica of my stepmother. Looks just as...deadly, too."
That started the laughing back up, and this time a blade of grass was sucked into his nose from a rather forceful snort. Draven jolted upward, covering his nose with his hands as the poking sensation threatened to make him sneeze. Eyes watering, he looked over at Zeph. His expression was a mixture of mock anger and actual discomfort. "Oh, now look at what you made me do! Now I've got a...ah...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-CHOO!"
And out flew the snot-covered blade of grass, landing a few inches in front of Draven.
Draven sniffled. "Those were the worst five seconds of my life...ugh. Grass does not belong up there." Well, at least it was over now. He turned back around and leaned back against his arms as he gave Zeph a simple smile. "Does your stepmum really look like that? Is she nice at least? I mean...beauty is skin-deep, so if she's nice it's not so bad if she looks like an abomination from the center of the earth."
Draven was laughing too, which made Zeph feel accomplished.
And then while Zeph wasn't looking, Draven sneezed, and a blade of grass covered in Dravensnot flew out and landed next to the kid. Zeph laughed even harder.
"Those were the worst five seconds of my life...ugh. Grass does not belong up there."
"There'll be more worst seconds of your life if you don't stop putting your face in the grass." he chuckled.
"Does your stepmum really look like that? Is she nice at least? I mean...beauty is skin-deep, so if she's nice it's not so bad if she looks like an abomination from the center of the earth."
"I certainly don't see what my mom sees in her...but seriously. I think I was seven when they started dating. I had nightmares for months about the amount of make-up she puts on. It's the main reason why I don't live with my mom anymore...I can't stand being around that woman. She's a frigging cow. She hates kids, and teenagers...don't get me started on her 'you have sex, the girl's pregnant automatically and you're stuck with her forever because then you gotta marry her even though you're only thirteen' rant. But my mom loves her and is happy, so it's cool, I guess. I think she used to be a crepy cat lady too, because all of her clothing smells like cat piss. Even after nine years of washing and wearing."
He chuckled, and fiddled with a clump of Draven's hair.
"I haven't seen her since last summer, and even then, it was only for a week. You see...my dad...he left me when I was little, and he only came back recently. And I jumped at the chance to hang out with him, even though he'd never been there for me. It was really awkward at first, but now, it's cool, y'know? He doesn't really approve of my mom's choice of wife, but he's not alone."
He smiled softly.
"None of them know about these, though." He pointed to his neck, to the scars.
"Weeks and weeks of that glop women slather all over their faces. Yuck."
"I certainly don't see what my mom sees in her...but seriously. I think I was seven when they started dating. I had nightmares for months about the amount of make-up she puts on. Ah, so his mother was a lesbian? Not that it bothered Draven hearing that: he had a similar infatuation with his own gender after all. Well, one member of it at the very least. He giggled and leaned into Zeph's hand as the Gryffindor messed with a bit of his hair.
"I haven't seen her since last summer, and even then, it was only for a week. You see...my dad...he left me when I was little, and he only came back recently. Draven laughed again, more at the way Zeph had said what he did than what he had actually said. Vampire scars weren't at all funny, but Zeph's complaint about weeks and weeks of glop was. "Well at least you didn't have three older sisters practicing make-up techniques on you when you were little." He paused and stared at the sky for effect. "Oh, wait. They still do that with me. Something about my face being the perfect canvas?" He shuddered.
"My mum and dad get on well, though you might have guessed at that since they had four children together. A united front, I'd call them: always backing each other up. Pretty important when it comes to the girls, since they're constantly looking for weaknesses and loopholes, Dahlia especially. She's a piece of work. One time--" He paused to laugh. "--one time, she wanted to see if I'd fit down the laundry chute. It took an hour and about a gallon of lard to get me free, and since then Dahlia's been banned from using the chute." He'd leave out the part about him avoiding the laundry chute like the plague since then. The boy needed to retain some of his dignity after all.
"Danielle's my favorite sister. She's the most like me out of the three, though she's a good deal more sporty. She's always the one cleaning the make-up off of my face though, and she's the best at reading stories. Does all the voices and knows when to speak softly and when to get really loud. I keep saying she'd be a great actress, but she's determined to compete in the Tour de France one day. Sometimes I wonder if she wasn't born with a bicycle seat affixed to her bum, she spends so much time riding. She had me ride on her handlebars once when I was five..." He grimaced. "That didn't go well. I was a lot more popular at school in the following weeks though! Everyone was convinced they were my best friend and had the right to draw on the cast around my left arm! That light blue cast was black by the time I got it sawed off."
That's right, Draven had gotten a broken arm. He was such a little badass.

Zeph laughed.
"I can see why they'd say your face is the perfect canvas, love. Everytime I see your face I want to touch it. But make-up? I really pity you..."

Zephyrus couldn't help but smile. It must really suck to have such troublesome sisters.
"That's why I'm an only child. My mom was scared I'd be a bad role model, because I'd always get in trouble at school. But it wasn't my fault; the teachers had no sense of humor."

Zeph laughed for a bit after hearing that. He patted Draven on the back, congratulating the firstyear for surviving this long.
It was a miracle.
"Just think, Dravey. In a few more years, you'll be able to pay them back." He snickered. Imagining a seventeen-year old Draven suddenly made his face heat up, because since Draven looked adorable now, he'd probably be hot when he was older.
Not like it mattered, though, because Draven as a whole was beautiful to him, no matter what.
"Just think, Dravey. In a few more years, you'll be able to pay them back."
That thump on the back made Draven jerk forward a bit from the force. Well, more from him not expecting it. Had he braced himself he could have kept steady. At any rate, Zeph's comment made him laugh. "That wouldn't be very gentlemanly of me, now would it? Both of those scenarios came about from a lack of judgment, not because my sisters were actually trying to be mean." Another chuckle. "They just overestimated how small I was. I'm such a scrawny thing, one thought I'd slip through the chute easily while the other thought I wouldn't unbalance her bike as much as I did. They both have long since apologized and I have long since forgiven them."
Aw, what a good little brother for not holding grudges.
"I've never really been one to hold things against people, even the ones that really meant to do me harm of some sort. I have trouble seeing it as their fault, really: nobody is born mean, they get that way through their experiences. The majority of bullies act the way they do because of their own insecurities, I think. They knock others down so they can feel more powerful, more in control of a situation." He sighed, closing his eyes. "I feel sorry for them, to be honest. What they all really need is a hug and someone to say 'I understand what you're going through.' I hope one day I'll be brave enough to do something like that." Yeah, he definitely wasn't brave enough at present: he was too scared of getting snapped in half or something. Being a bit bigger first would be nice.
"What about you? What's your take on why mean people are that way?"

Zeph nodded, understanding completely. He wasn't surprised that Draven believed in this, but he definatly was taken aback by the maturity that he then realised the boy had. And it only made the older boy's respect and love for him increase.
"What about you? What's your take on why mean people are that way?"
Zeph scratched the back of his head.
"My take? It's exactly the same as yours, I guess. But the thing is, if they keep it up, it makes me and possibly others believe that they don't want to change, that they don't want people to see that insecure side of them...that's what bothers me." He paused, debating on wether to continue or not. "The only grudge I hold is...well...against vampires, and sadly...an old friend of mine...I know I'll end up telling you that story today; it's about time I told someone..."
He smiled softly.
"So, if I ever meet those sisters of yours, would you mind if I give them a noogie for putting makeup all over your beautiful face?"
"My take? It's exactly the same as yours, I guess. But the thing is, if they keep it up, it makes me and possibly others believe that they don't want to change, that they don't want people to see that insecure side of them...that's what bothers me."
Draven shrugged, supposing he saw Zeph's point. Really, though...he didn't fully understand it. Meanness was a habit in his mind. It took time to break one of it, and that process could only begin by reaching out to that person. You had to forgive them no matter how many times they'd wronged you. Not to do so would be detrimental to their rehabilitation. That's how Draven saw it.
"The only grudge I hold is...well...against vampires, and sadly...an old friend of mine...I know I'll end up telling you that story today; it's about time I told someone..."
"Don't feel like you have to, Zeph." he said while placing a hand on his boyfriend's knee. "If it's still to raw a memory, you can tell me later...or never, if it hurts too much." He gave Zeph a soft smile. "I don't want to see you hurt." He meant it too: if anyone ever made his dearest of friends cry, Draven would see them pay.
"So, if I ever meet those sisters of yours, would you mind if I give them a noogie for putting makeup all over your beautiful face?"
The boy laughed. "I'm sure they would provide you with more personal reasons to give them a noogie: their antics aren't reserved for their little brother." Boy, was that ever true. "I wouldn't put it past them to put makeup on your face, as smooth and flawless as it is." Oh Draven, you flirt.

"Don't feel like you have to, Zeph. If it's still to raw a memory, you can tell me later...or never, if it hurts too much." Draven smiled at him softly. "I don't want to see you hurt."
A hand placed on his knee had never been more comforting.
"Whatever doesn't kill you can only make you stronger..." he said, more to himself than Draven, and looked back up into the bright blueness of the sky.
"I'm sure they would provide you with more personal reasons to give them a noogie: their antics aren't reserved for their little brother. I wouldn't put it past them to put makeup on your face, as smooth and flawless as it is."
He laughed at that, imagining a group of girls putting that junk on every guy that walked in through the door. Quite humorous, if you asked him. Blushing deeply at that last comment, he leaned over and kissed his little boyfriend's cheek. As he did so, he placed a hand on top of the hand on his knee and snuck his thumb underneath it, caressing Draven's palm softly. He whispered "I love you." into his boyfriend's ear, kissing it tenderly.
He thought of what to say next, and after a few minutes of silence on Zeph's part, he spoke.
"...So, what's your favourite song?"
He had been dying to ask. He wanted to know a lot more about his Draven, so what better to ask than through music, right?
Yaaaay, the comment was rewarded with a kiss on the cheek. Draven smiled as he felt Zeph's hand wrap around his own, thumb stroking his smooth palm. He really had to keep himself from giggling and squirming, though: that really tickled. It wasn't much of an exaggeration to say Draven was ticklish everywhere, and his palms were particular weaknesses. He deepened his grin and stared out at the lake to distract himself from it. He was blushing a good deal, too, from holding back the laughter.
"I love you."
Oh god, the kiss on the ear tickled too. He nearly laughed at that point but by some miracle was able to keep all but a little squeak from getting out. "I love you too," he said through clenched teeth. Must not laugh, must not laugh, must not laugh. Must not ruin the moment by laughing, must not laugh. The poor boy's eyes were watering now. This was excruciating.
" "...So, what's your favourite song?"
YES, a distraction and an excuse to free his hand from the inadvertent but relentless tickling. He'd stroke his chin with that hand, placing the other hand on his elbow as he thought about the question. "Rather a difficult question to answer, Zeph. There are loads of songs I love listening to. My favourite, though...hmmm..." It really was a tough one to answer. The answer depended a lot on the boy's mood, after all, among other things. What he was doing also had a factor in it, for as much as he loved ballads they weren't helpful when working on school projects. That scenario called for something upbeat and lively to keep him going.
But how to answer?
"...This is ridiculously difficult!" he concluded with a laugh. "I should know these things but I just can't pick one song that I love above all others. I mean, the way I look at the question, the best way to go about answering it is reforming the question to read 'if you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?' That's a dreadful question to have to answer. Even a most beloved song would get old if it were the only thing you could listen to."
Augh, how frustrating. Of all the questions he'd been asked in his life, this simple one is the question that stumped him. Letting out a long sigh, Draven got up and walked to the water's edge. Once there he picked up a flat rock and flicked out towards the lake. It bounced off the surface one, two, three, four, five, six times before finally losing momentum and sinking towards the bottom of the lake.
"Rather a difficult question to answer, Zeph. There are loads of songs I love listening to. My favourite, though...hmmm..."
A few moments passed before Draven responded.
"...This is ridiculously difficult! I should know these things but I just can't pick one song that I love above all others. I mean, the way I look at the question, the best way to go about answering it is reforming the question to read 'if you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?' That's a dreadful question to have to answer. Even a most beloved song would get old if it were the only thing you could listen to."
Zephyrus laughed again((all he ever does is grin and laugh XD)); he knew how the boy felt. He too wouldn't have been able to choose a favorite song out off the top of his head, or even at all, really.
"I know how you feel. Whenever I'm asked that, I wanna rip my hair out because I can never give a straight answer. I can tell people one of my more favourite songs though, or all of them, though it would take ten years to do so; five for me to remember, and five to list them all." He laughed. "So don't feel too bad-"
He instantly shut up when the younger got up and walked over, closer to the lake and skipped a rock.
"How'd you do that?" He asked, getting up and heading over to the eleven year-old's side. He had never learned, since he'd always thought you could do it with any old rock. It had never made sense to him, and it defied every law of ZePhysics. He was intrigued, never having met someone who could skip a rock six times.
"Is there some kind of trick?"

Draven was completely lost in thought now as he watched the ripples grow and run into each other. He stared at the disturbance as he dealt with the own disturbance in his mind, brought on by Zeph's difficult question. It had brought another one to the surface, one that he didn't really want to deal with now if ever. What was he going to do this summer? Go back home, he assumed, but that meant having to tell his parents how his year went: what stuff he learned, how he liked the school, what his favourite class was...what friends he had made. Zeph would inevitably come up, and Draven's relationship with him...then what? Draven groaned and put his face in his hands.
"How'd you do that? Is there some kind of trick?"
The sudden question startled Draven, making him jump as he cried out "Blimey!" Then he turned around to see it was just Zeph. Phew. "Ah, right...sorry. Got stuck in my head for a minute." Just like Zeph had during the duel. Draven considered himself lucky that Zeph snapped him with a question rather than a blast of frigid water.
"Well...er...it starts with the rock." Draven began looking around again, trying to find another flat one. He used his foot to nudge a few free from the wet dirt, eyes lighting up a bit when he found the perfect rock for the job. He picked it up and dusted it off, holding it out for Zeph to see. "It needs to be round and flat, like this. That's the easy part. Next you've got to get just the right spin on it by flicking your wrist just so. He held the rock in his fingers and flicked his wrist to demonstrate the technique. "Then, you've got to get it to the right speed. Your arm handles that. You give it a hard toss but it needs to be controlled too: the objective is to make the rock slap the surface of the water, then spin off of it. Once you have your throw planned out, you just..." He flicked the rock from his hand, watching as it made its way towards the water.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven bounces, and then it followed its predecessor to the bottom of the lake.
"It's hard to get it all down, but once you do it's easy." He chuckled and gave Zeph a smile, but it began to fade as soon as he began to speak again. "My...dad taught me."
He sighed and crouched down, absently throwing a random rock into the water and watching it sink like...well, a rock. "What am I going to do, Zeph?"
