"Blimey! Ah, right...sorry. Got stuck in my head for a minute."
Zeph smiled.
"Well...er...it starts with the rock. It needs to be round and flat, like this. That's the easy part. Next you've got to get just the right spin on it by flicking your wrist just so. Then, you've got to get it to the right speed. Your arm handles that. You give it a hard toss but it needs to be controlled too: the objective is to make the rock slap the surface of the water, then spin off of it. Once you have your throw planned out, you just...It's hard to get it all down, but once you do it's easy. My...dad taught me."
Zeph suddenly had a feeling that the conversation would go back to that topic, and he felt his heart sink.
"Draven, I..." He what? What could he say? What could he do?
The younger boy crouched down and half-heartedly tossed a rock into the water.
"What am I going to do, Zeph?"
Zephyrus sat down next to him, unable to speak. That damned lump in his throat had come back with a vengeance.
After some time, he willed it away and spoke quietly.
"You could spend the summer with me. At my house. My dad wouldn't mind, I've had friends over before. For the whole summer, too. Unless your parents aren't okay with you hanging out with friends that they don't know...But hey, I've always got that Floo Powder stuff above my fireplace, so I could visit whenever, right? I could give you some too, and we could hang out at each other's houses all through the summer, so then you don't have to be alone for too long..."
He felt so useless; unable to help, unable to ease the pain and the worry...
Utterly useless.
Zeph smiled.
