Welcome students, to the heart of your magical education; Charms Class! My name is Professor O'Conner, and I hope you will learn nearly as much from me as I am sure I will from you.
I'd also like to introduce you to my assistant, Raiku, my Alaskan Malamute. It's always good to have a second pair of eyes.
Intro to Charms
Charms are a type of magic spell concerned with enchanting an object to behave in a way that isn't normal for that object. A Sonorus charm will make the caster's voice carry over long distances, while the Summoning Charm brings an object to the caster.
Charms are not only something of a catch-all for spells that aren't Transfiguration which -by the way are spells that change the inherent nature of an object. So, for the most part, if a spell isn't Transfiguration, it's probably a Charm.
A Charm might cause something to flash different colors. It might cause an object to fly through the air or even clean your room - a handy one if I do say so myself! Charms can make a person laugh or dance or even shield them from most hexes and curses. In all of these cases, the object or the person doesn't really change, they just do something unexpected.
Charm spells are in some ways the opposite of Curses. Many Charms seem to have an innate helpful tone while Curses have an innate harmful ones. Just remember; Charms are never weaker magic; they can be extremely powerful and you are well advised to approach any new magic with a clear mind and a good heaping dose of respect.
Cheering Charms and Other Mood Altering Spells
Today's charm is the Cheering Charm, a spell that makes another person happy. When the spell is overdone, it can cause the victim to be overcome with fits of hysterical laughter. It was invented by Felix Summerbee during the 1400s. A turbulent time by any measure, it is said that Mr. Summerbee was saddened by his neighbors morose views on life and so invented this charm to bring them the -at the time- the unusual happiness he experienced every day. Eventually he created the Cheering Charm we know today, and inadvertently giving the town where he lived the nickname of Laughter Glen.
Though it is not common knowledge in the Wizarding World today, Cheering Charms are not the only mood-altering charm. Mr. Summerbee originally was calling his charm the Ecstatic Charm, as it was very powerful at first. In the 1600 it was in fashion to protect ones property with a charm that caused such sever depression the person affected with it would very quickly fall to the ground weeping, almost never making it past the garden gate. Thankfully mood altering magic is always temporary, and modern Cheering Charms only last about an half hour to an hour at best.
WARNING:
I want everyone to be careful at first, with this assignment, until you know your own strength. Overdoing any of the following could lead to a visit to the hospital wing. Moods of others are nothing to trifle with!
HOMEWORK:
