it had been so long since spain. six years already, and even then it seemed simultaneously too soon and not soon enough. conflict was the name of the game these days it seemed. toby remembered the streets of drakborough only vaguely, and they had surely changed since he'd last been here. last time, he'd been a student so the questions of his room and board had been answered quite agreeably. he had a little money left from that town in germany which he'd rid of a werewolf. not one of the ones that was a wizard with a monthly problem, but a true monster, who actually enjoyed killing.
still, it wasn't enough to live on for long. he planned on being here for a while. he might as well get a job while he was at it. if he remembered correctly, this part of spain was just crawling with monsters for him to kill. he marched right up to city hall, one building that had remained largely unchanged in this town that had seen so much.
toby approached the woman at the front desk. "i need to speak with the mayor. is he in?" he batted his big brown eyes at her, and gave her the best smile he could work up. "i wouldn't normally ask so directly, but i really need to speak with him." as usual, his looks did the trick. the woman waved him through to one of city hall's waiting areas, with promises that the mayor would be with him shortly.

shortly, in city hall at least, seemed to mean 'in excess of three hours'. although, to be honest, it felt more like three weeks to toby. the first hour he waited patiently, knowing that mustang was a busy guy and couldn't be expected to drop everything just because some punk kid showed up out of nowhere with no appointment. in the second hour, he went back to the secretary and asked her to remind mustang that he was waiting. the reply came back that mustang was aware, and that with a bit more patience, he would be here soon.
as the third hour drew to a close however, toby decided not to get his hopes up. he again approached the secretary. "let the mayor know i'll come back another day. maybe when he's not so busy?" the woman nodded, and jotted the note down so she could deliver it later. toby gave her another dashing smile, and turned to go, thoroughly disappointed.

James was a bit busy. If by busy you meant "pounding his head into his desk repeatedly." His own foolishness astounded him. He couldn't believe what he had brought down on himself. By taking the DADA job he had sacrificed what little free time he had left. Of course he could just drop the mayorship. The problem with that was of course the Black Forest Church. They were dangerous and as long as they posed a threat, he'd have to be here to hold off the threat.
Otherwise he'd chuck the job and go teach.
But the constant frustrations... He had just had to explain to a hag, at length, why a daily supply of rosy cheeked children was not part of her rights as a citizen of Drakborough. She had not been happy about that. It had taken quite a bit of negotiating to get her to leave. He had promised her one hundred pounds of liver a week. She had wanted that same amount per day. But he knew hags didn't need that much food. Still he's have to monitor her closely and make sure she wasn't going to be stealing any children.
He sighed and hit his intercom "Claudia, is there anyone else for today?"
"Sure is, he's been waiting quite awhile. He's about to leave."
James cursed, and hit the intercom button again, "Let him in, please."

"wait!" the voice of the secretary stopped toby before he got to the door. He stopped and turned around, returning to her desk. "the mayor will see you now," she said, and led him to the mayor's office. stepping inside, toby took in the surroundings. then he took in the man in front of him. looked like he meant business. good.
"i know you're a busy man, so i won't take long. i'm a monster hunter." he pulled out about a dozen different letters of thanks from other mayors across north america and europe, and put them on mustang's desk. "i was a student at firefox about six years ago, when i was abducted by vampires. thanks to some extraordinary luck, i managed to escape. ever since then i've been dedicated to wiping the bastards out. i'd like to extend my services to you, if you'll have me."

"Um, well." He was a little taken aback. He hadn't really been expecting a hunter to come in and announce that he was going to destroy all vampires. But he could certainly use him. The thing about lone hunters was they were goddamned dangerous. One person who has dedicated themselves to fighting deadly monsters and has managed to survive for years? Dangerous.
"You must understand, we are a tolerant community here. We make the distinction between cursed individuals and those that are the real monsters. Anyone who truly wants to live a normal life is welcome. But we're not stupid. We do watch them. If they break the law, attack a human unprovoked, we have the Special Cases department within the Drakborough Police to deal with them. You'd be working under a lycanthrope named Miles Landon, hopefully that's not a problem. Indeed, I'd have work for you right away." He was thinking of Grendel. He hadn't noticed any progress being made by the two he already had on the job.
"And any monster hunting, vampire or otherwise, outside of Drakborough would be sanctioned provided proof of danger to Drakborough and it's citizens. Shouldn't be too difficult considering how dangerous this area is."

"no, i get it. there's a difference between someone with an unfortunate condition and the true monsters. i don't cotton to the 'kill em all' mentality." His hunts were more like assassinations; precise hits that were planned for stealth. he wasn't a wands blazing, go-for-glory type. "if you got work for me, i'm interested." as long as the mayor didn't mind his side project of killing the damn monsters that kidnapped him, all those years ago.
"where is this miles guy? i'd like to make some introuctions." that and find a place to sleep, since it looked like he'd be sticking around for a while.

"Good to know we're on the same page. I was actually wondering why me when the Black Forest Church seems to run the monster hunting game around here," he smiled weakly. "You'll find Miles at the other Drakborough bar. The Marquessa and the Imp."
He was worried about Miles. He'd seen something of a downward spiral. After Grendel escaped Miles had been exhibiting extreme paranoia, and had developed a short temper. He was afraid. Grendel had hurt him deeply, and any chance of closure lay with Grendel's death. It would do him good to have a partner, James thought.
"Just tell him it's about the Grendel case. You're partnering up. He'll tell you the details. As far as housing goes, if you already have accommodations that's great, otherwise we an work something out. If theres any other jobs you might get a lead on, I'm sure Miles can help you out. Welcome to Special Cases, probationary officer... What was your name?"
