Hexodus Jacobson stumbled into the Feasting Hall, having almost no idea what to do. Her arms were full with books, and she thought here would be a good spot to do her homework. She didn't know anyone in Slytherin, so she didn't wan to venture into the common room, so she just collapsed at the Slytherin table, her books scattered everywhere.
Well, homework time, she thought with a sigh, and plunking her A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration book on the table, she opened up. The assignment was the first three chapters. Ugh, too much. She slammed her head down, and then she felt her head hit the hard wood. She popped up, and she dragged her book back in front of her. The words inside were confusing, she couldn't even get past the first paragraph.
"Ugh, help would be nice," she murmured. She realized it was a little loud, and she shrunk down, almost trying to hide herself.

Micha Volkov had a problem. No, it wasn't the menagerie of animals in front of her, and no, it wasn't that she'd accidentally forgot her pen. Both, she could deal with. When in lack of ink, a wand always came through, and the animals had behaved her since she'd given them all her latest series of menacing looks. The cat Aleksei also did his part to intimidate his mink and raven acquaintances, and begrudgingly they lay still.
Her problem was Transfigurations itself. Any witch worth her salt could transfigure, yet here she was, sitting there with wand outstretched, the proper incantation on her tongue, and... well, nothing. No outcome, no result. Frustrated, she set the wand down, her cool demeanor expressing nothing but the tight draw of her lips a dead giveaway to her mood.
Further down the table, a loud bang sounded out. Grateful for a distraction, Micha stood and stepped neatly down to where a younger girl sat, obviously as frustrated as herself. Dark gray eyes accosted the girl's reading material; it seemed this one was either a first or a second year. "Micha Volkov, fifth year," she said by way of introducing herself, the words clipped and accent-free. "You need help?"
Matches, she could do.

So here Arc was, walking along in the feasting hall. Over one arm was slung a bag weighed down by a few books, while the other arm held his super epic badass wizard staff. No wand for Arc, he was a real wizard. you know, like Gandalf or something. All the cool wizards used a staff instead of a dumb twig, didn't they?
What was it that all the cool wizards also did? They saved everyone forever and stuff. So, while passing by the Slytherin table and overhearing someone comment about needing help, Arc made up his mind that he was all over that. Besides, when she said she needed help and had a pile of books in front of her, that probably meant she needed someone who was kinda smart, didn't it? And weren't Ravenclaws supposedly good at smart people stuff?
'Help has arrived!' He said. Er, well, it was what he would have said, pivoting on the spot to face the girl, if it wasn't for the other Slytherin jerk who showed up to interrupt his awesome entrance. Instead, taking a couple of awkward steps towards the pair of girls, he spoke, eyes fixed upon the first-year's shoes. "Uhhh, I guess I could give you some help too, if you want?"

Hexodus looked up to see a way older girl looking down at her. She started stammering immediately, not knowing how to talk to the older girls and boys of Slytherin. Her eyes went down to the floor, suddenly taking a sudden interest in her shoes. "Micha Volkov, fifth year. You need help?" the girl offered, somewhat kindly, and Hexodus nodded gratefully.
"Y-yes! I'm Hexodus Jacobson, f-first year. Um, I can't understand the t-text, and I can't transfigure the matches. Can you help m-me?" she asked hesitantly, with a slight Puerto Rican accent and with a small smile she looked up from under her brown locks, her hands quivering a little. She noticed another person came up, and judging by his robes, he was a Ravenclaw. She smiled gratefully, thankful for the quick help. "Thank you both!" she piped up quickly. She was so nervous.
((Sorry so short, have to leave quickly. I can reply on my phone since I'm not at laptop at the moment. ))

Nearly on the tail end of her question, a boy arrived, stuttering out that he, too, could lend assistance. The Slytherin merely looked at him, expression still one of polite indifference. She did not see why he had to come up and offer help when she had just so obviously done it herself, but perhaps there was more than met the eye to this situation. Yes, that was it; the boy had been trying to flirt with the poor younger girl. Micha immediately did not approve.
The dark-haired Russian sat down next to Hexodus, giving her a short nod at her introduction. She left no room for Arc. Being unsure on how to help with the 'text' issue -- she'd glanced over the book herself, and it had been so boringly dry she'd discarded immediately -- Micha instead went directly to the assignment itself. "You may have to read the chapters several times to understand," she said smoothly. "But I can help with the matches. Is it the incantation you're having issues with?"
As she spoke, she glanced once over at the newcomer boy. He had not so much as introduced himself yet, but he still expected to be greeted as one of their own? Hexodus she could assume was a Slytherin just because of where she sat (no one would sit at the Slytherin table just because), but this one she had no idea on. She eyed him, one single perked eyebrow suggesting he might want to let them know who, exactly, they were dealing with.
"Hi there, I'm Arc!" He said, cheerfully yet awkwardly. For a few more long seconds, he continued to just stand there, looking like the awkward doofus that he was. All coherent train of thought had fallen to pieces in light of the indifferent stare he got from the older Slytherin girl. He even briefly forgot that he had offered to help the other girl.
Arc wasn't all that great at dealing with girls to begin with, much less girls who were older than him. It was probably a good thing she had gone ahead and sat down first, thus assuring that Arc was a few heads taller than her. The only thing worse than an older girl not greeting him in a friendly way was an older, taller girl who wasn't all that friendly. For whatever reason, he was unnerved by any girl who could look down on him (literally, rather than figuratively).
"I, uhhh, oh yeah! Matches. Incantations. Stuff." He said hurriedly, seating himself on the opposite side of Hex from where Micha had seated herself.

The girl Micha sat herself on the right side of Hex, while the awkward boy Arc sat himself on the other side. Micha asked if it was the incantation, and Hex nodded shamefully. The boy seemed kind of out of it, responding with a quick and obvious, "I, uhhhhh, oh yeah! Matches. Incantations. Stuff." Hex couldn't help but giggle at the boys inattention, and she turned back to the book.
"Yeah. I read the text, but I don't think I can get the pronunciation down. How does it go?" Hex asked, and turning back to her matches, she muttered, "Nee-duh-leh-fors!" Nothing happened. "I think I'm pronouncing it wrong, or I don't have the wrist technique down, I don't know!" she told the two older students. Holding her head in her right hand, she tapped the table with her left hand, thinking hard.

Micha was not a friendly person. It was easy enough to ignore the boy-child, who introduced himself as 'Arc' and still didn't give out his year and House. The Slytherin was, however, immensely loyal and, furthermore, a tad bit obsessed with winning the House Cup. She would simply die if those Gryffindor morons beat them. For all she knew, this kid could be a Gryffindor, and that presumption was reason enough for her to instantly dislike him. Anyway, her loyalty to her House is what had drawn her to the younger Slytherin, not any desire to impress.
Unlike some people.
The girl drew Micha's attention with her slight, ah, how did they say it again, back in America? Right; noobishness. Gently, the Russian shook her head. "Nee-duh-lee-fors. You were very close, though. Sometimes, just that minor change can help." Hexodus was kind of like a puppy, Micha thought. The older girl could not help but be amused. "Do you have your matches?"

Hex looked at the older girl, who was giving her some advice. "Nee-duh-lee-fors. You were very close, though. Sometimes, just that minor change can help. Do you have your matches?" Micha asked with a kind tone of voice. Hex grabbed the small box, and pulling one out, she set it on the table. She was kind of nervous, and she didn't know why. She had two people to help her if she needed it, and they were both kind. Arc was kind of awkward, and Micha was a little cold at some points, but she had help. She read quickly over the instructions again, and she turned back to the match, staring it down like she could light it on fire with her eyes. Who knew? Maybe she could.
"I have my match right here. It says that I only need to transfigure one, so I got it out. Let me see if I have this down, nee-duh-lee-fors, right? Ok, got to focus," she said, and grabbing her wand tightly in her right hand, she concetrated on the match. Swishing her wand in the air, she called out in a loud voice, "Nee-duh-lee-fors!" There was a slight spark, and then the match was gone. In it's place was a skinny needle. Hex smiled and raised her wand in the air, smiling a little. Her eyes were bright, and her face was blushing a little, and she was happy.
"Uh, well, I guess you don't need my help after all!" Arc said with an awkward chuckle. For someone loudly exclaiming she needed help, she sure had done a great job of performing the task perfectly on her first try.
With that, and especially seeing how the older bitch was still rudely ignoring him, he felt it about time to GTFO. So, slowly standing up again from where he had been seated, he nervously cleared his throat. "I, uhhh, guess I'll be heading out now?"

Micha nodded, approving, as the little Slytherin got the spell right. "Easy, yes? Once you have it, it is not too difficult." Her straight brows knitted, slightly, as she glanced over at her own assignment. The three animals gave her wary looks, which she returned, to some extent.
The rude boy decided to leave. Micha gave him a look, then stood herself. "Why don't you help her with the chapter? That is your assignment too, is it not?" She was assuming he was the same year as Hexodus, seeing as how short he was.
The slender Russian then strode back to her original spot, heeled Mary Janes clicking neatly against the floor. Fiercely, she brandished her wand, and one after another, Transfigured each of the waiting animals. The raven became a feathered hairclip. The mink became a stole. Aleksei became a set of gray, fluffy costume cat ears, set on a gray headband. Micha coughed into her hand and quickly changed him into a pair of earmuffs instead.
She was not good at Transfigurations, not in the least, but her annoyance levels had risen enough to give her that level of focus that empowered her to temporarily do things without hardly trying. A.k.a., slightly pissed and ready to get the hell out of there. Micha never was good at these 'social functions'.
The Slytherin gathered up her transfigured items, nodded once to Hexodus, firmly acknowledging her as a fellow Slytherin while at the same time further ignoring Arc, and left.

Hex was smiling victoriously, when the Ravenclaw stood up awkwardly and started walking away. "Uh, well, I guess you don't need my help after all! I, uhhh, guess I'll be heading out now?" he called out, and he looked at them both awkwardly. So did the Slytherin. "Why don't you help her with the chapter? That is your assignment too, is it not?" the Slytherin Micha told the Ravenclaw Arc. She seemed to be wanting to get back to her transfiguration project, so she left her to her work. She seemed kind of angry.
Hex felt kind of bummed, so she stood up and called out to the Ravenclaw. "Do you think you could help me with the chapter? I can't understand it at all. I tried reading it, but it doesn't exactly..." she coughed a little and said a little more quietly, "compute. Can you help me please? Just real quick, and then you can go?" Honestly the stuff wasn't that hard, just hard to understand in written form. It was just that she had been so confused, and it would've been better if she had someone to explain it all.
