Transfigurations is a complex and challenging branch of magic that requires a clear image and will as much as it does concentration and correct pronunciation. Due to its nature, its spells often take longer to perform than most charms. Likewise, transfiguration spells gone wrong are more difficult to correct than most misfired charms. Anyone practicing transfiguration must do it with utmost seriousness and their full attention.
However, the art of transfiguration is a flexible and rewarding skill once mastered. At the lower levels, one may turn one object into another that's more practical and suited to their needs at the time, such as turning a needle into a match or beetles into buttons. Eventually, more complicated transfigurations can be performed, and differences in the size and forms between the original and final transfigured object become easier to manage. As one skill in transfiguration grows, cross-species transfiguration becomes possible as well as human transfiguration.
Take note that there are certain limitations to transfiguration, as specified by Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration.
Very skilled witches and wizards can even wandlessly transfigure their own bodies back and forth between a chosen species and their human forms while retaining sentience. They are called animagi, and we may study them in a later lesson...
The more familiar one is with the desired final form of transfigured object, the more successful the transfiguration generally is.
Since this is your first lesson in a while, we will have a practical review on performing transfiguration spells. Please do them to the best of your abilities. Points will be rewarded on effort and success. This should be review for everyone except the first-year students.
First years: Read the first three chapters of A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch. Turn a match into a needle. Matches are provided. Remember to use concentration, precise wand movements, and the correct pronunciation. The incantation is needlifors, pronounced nee-duh-lee-fors.
Second years: Same as first years, but transfigure five matches into needles.
Third, fourth, and fifth years: Transfigure three animals into objects with similar characteristics, e.g. a rabbit into a slipper.
Sixth and seventh years: Make something vanish using evanesco. It was on your O.W.L.s, so you should be capable of it. Do this correctly at least three times.
Points will be rewarded based on accuracy, the number of objects transfigured, and the difficulty of the transfiguration. Bonus points will be given for transfiguring more objects than stated by the requirement.
Note: Do not transfigure other students' pets or familiars without their permission. Do attempt transfiguration on other people or beings of intelligence.
