HISTORY.
General: Mario Valesquez Espada was born to Magus Cesare Espada and his wife, La Bruja Celestina Velasquez, in his father's villa of La Ascensión de Las Espada outside of Zaragoza. As the fourth of six children of a very rich and powerful wizard, whose pureblood family's history reached back to the time of the Spanish Inquistion, he had one of two choices - either grow up believing himself to be superior to all other people, both wizard and muggle, or be incredibly overwhelmed by it all - as it was, Mario chose neither of the choices. Instead, he became the 'scholar' of the family, instantly grabbing at any book in the villa's library and reading to himself all day. While his brothers (and sister) would play quidditch and go horseback riding, and his other sisters would sit and giggle and play with their elaborate dolls, Mario would sit away from them, lost in the world of his own imagination.
His increasing intelligence led his mother La Bruja to send him off to Nostri Magi, in Rome, for proper education. None of his other brothers and sisters were given this opportunity - all of them elected to stay at home and be homeschooled in their magical arts, as was the tradition of most of Las Familias in Spain. He certainly proved worthy of the honor, learning how to silent cast - the most important training Nostri Magi had to offer - by the age of 13. However, the boy cared little for the practical aspects of magic. Theory was where he excelled - he would spend hours of every day locked in Il Vaticano's secret libraries, reading the history of the world both magic and muggle. He finally graduated with honors at the age of 17, and after that returned to La Ascensión de Las Espada, where he served as scholar and advisor to his father, El Magus.
When Mario was 23, Firefox University sprung up in Drakborough, and a great buzz came over Las Familias in Spain over their opinion on the matter. El Magus Cesare was completely opposed to the idea of a foreign wizard founding a school on their soil, and Talon Windwaltz's continued actions as a de facto 'speaker on behalf of Spain' in international affairs was considered a grievous offense to him and to Las Familias as a whole. Mario, however, viewed the intervention of Headmaster Windwaltz - the founding of a school, and an attempt to open Spain up to the magical community as a whole - as the next step in Spanish politics. So when Melia Birchheel, Mario's distant cousin, offered friendship to Talon on behalf of Las Familias, Mario agreed with her.
And when Talon Windwaltz offered the chance for a new 'Ministry of Magic' to step in from the International Confederation of Wizards to be formed in Spain, and Melia rescinded her favor to Talon and the International Confederation of Wizards, Mario continued to agree with him. In fact, Mario's support greatly angered El Magus, who would have sent all wizards loyal to Las Familias against Firefox University and this new 'Ministry of Magic' to wipe it off the face of Spain, were it not filled with innocent children. At the very least, he wanted Talon Windwaltz and Julius Plutus clasped in irons in the dungeons of La Ascensión.
When the Ministry fell, El Magus rejoiced, and Mario was disappointed. He still dreams of a day when Spain can forget its continued feudal roots and can come to accept the modern world, and - in an act that is bound to have deeply angered his father - when Talon Windwaltz left Firefox University to become a politician on the International Confederation of Wizards, Mario applied to become History of Magic Professor in his stead.
