It had been a long walk all the way back up from the lake, filled with chatter between the two students. Some of it interesting, and some of it not- talk of the places they had come from, the familes they had, and all sorts of eccentric things in between. The kind of things that the former prefect hadn't opened up about since she was with Xavier, or, to go even further back, with the now-demoness Kalista. It made her feel happy again, to have a friend that she thought wouldn't ever leave her. Most of her friends had a bit of a habit with running off and becoming some sort of magical creature.
"So." She announced, flinging open the doors to the Dueling Hall and thankfully finding it empty. "Here we are. I've never been here before, but it looks like a nice sort of place. Now, what did you want to teach me?"
'Twas a grand dueling hall. The wall opposite the gate was lined with weapons of all sorts, emergency aid potions dotted the walls and corners, and a sourceless glow illuminated the entire chamber. A damp chill ran through it, but Muryllis felt it would be reinvigorating during the heat of combat.
"Aah, but what do you not know? Tell me, how proficient are you with the skill of silent casting?" he asked her. This would be quite a fun evening.
In all honesty, she considered herself to be highly proficent in most aspects of spellcasting. Her worst subjects were usually things that didn't involve her wand, such as History of Magic and Potions. But in everything else she usually managed to do well enough to be satisfied, and to feel confident about her N.E.W.Ts. But if there was something new to be learned, she was all ready to gobble it right up. Anything that could possibly add to her chance of getting a Ministry job as soon as she graduated was worth learning in her eyes.
"Silent casting?" She muttered, walking out to the center of the hall and withdrawing her wand. It was a new one, and she was eager to take it for a test run. "Not very, I'm afraid, though I could probably kick you from here to China just with regular spells." Right now, she was really hoping that he wouldn't underestimate her. He hadn't known her back at MH, and really couldn't be a very good judge of what she was capable of doing.
'...though I could kick you from here to China just with regular spells.' He couldn't help but laugh. "You see, my dear Faye; silent casting is regular spells, you just don't verbalize the words. I can't really say that it's simple, because I was taught from the start to silent cast, only verbalizing the words so that we could get a feel for what the spell was about; there is emotion tied into the words, too," he paused. What had that odd little book in the library said? A spell is composed of the emotion of what it is meant to do, and the key word that it was bonded to upon its creation; something of the sort. Shaking the memory of the book out of his head, he returned to the matter at hand.
"Silent casting. All it is, really, is reciting the word in your head. The problem with it being difficult is that, often just thinking of the word does not conjure up the emotions needed to trigger the spell," there he went again; that was a pretty interesting fact to discover, however. "You see, I have read that, in order for a spell to be cast, you must feel or imagine the emotion tied into it (the general idea of the spell; 'enemy' or 'attack' for a Petrificus, 'light' or 'glow' for a Lumose, etc.) That, along with the spell's bonded word, produces the spell. Again, however, when thinking the word, you often leave out the necessary amount of feeling required. Lets try this: cast Lumos a couple of times, then try it without saying the word out loud.
Perfect; now he could try working on his experiments with Lumos; he began, watching Faye as he played with the faint differences in light...

Emotions? Those were always something she'd had difficulty controlling, so maybe this was something that wasn't going to work out very well for her. Letting out a long sigh, she figured that it was at least worth a shot. Lumos. Lumos. Lumos. Her mental voice sounded bored, even to her, and absolutely nothing came out of the end of her wand. Not even the faintest spark or glimmer of light. Mury seemed to be having a grand old time with his little lumos spell, but she didn't seem to grasp the concept of imagining something in your mind. For her, words were a lot easier.
"Lumos." She finally said, watching as her wand lit up with no thought involved what-so-ever. "This silent casting stuff is hard- why even bother thinking about the word when you can say it out loud?" Maybe it was necessary in some cases, but it was so much easier to just whisper the spell and pray that your enemy hadn't managed to overhear you.

...Nox; Lumos. The wand tip lit up yet again as he transfered it from hand to hand, sitting on the floor for the purpose of watching it as he put it on the ground. He really was having a grand old time with his little lumos spell. Hmm.. what if... and he threw it up in the air, letting it drop with a dull, wooden thud on the stone floor. Interesting; the wand flickered greatly while in the air, obviously trying to find a significant source of Thread. When it landed, it was satisfied by that infused into the ground. Very interesting.
He glanced up as Faye began the complaint he was hoping for: Why silent cast when you can say it out loud? Pulling himself to his feet, he bent over to brush himself off. "Suppose, for a moment, that I am a dangerous enemy. You have your arsenal of spells with which you know you can defeat me with relative ease." He looked up. "There's not much I can do," he turned around and began walking away from Faye, stopping and turning around when he was about twenty feet away from her. "Because I don't know many defensive combat spells."
He looked down and picked a giant chunk of dust off his robe. Then, with the terrifying suddenness of something you don't expect, he glanced up, flicked his wand, and silenced her voice. "All those spells with which you could defeat me; all the hexes, all the charms, all the curses; they are all useless now. I have the upper hand with a simple spell." Walking up to her with a victorious smile, he returned her voice. "That, is why you should know how to silent cast. Now, keep casting the spell verbally, paying careful attention to what you think, what you feel as you cast it. That is what you must feel when you think the word." He sat back down, continuing his research, trying to find the Thread...

At first, she was entirely unsure about what the heck he was doing. She crossed her arms over her chest and allowed a bored look to come over her face- what kind of point could he possibly make to her? None of it would change her mind anyway. With her wand still flickering from the lumos spell, she watched as he walked away from her. This made her interested, of course, and she took a more defensive stance. While she was sure that he wouldn't try to hurt her with any sort of painful spell, she was a fomer prefect. She had a reputation to protect. She couldn't just let herself be run over by a silly fifth year; that would be such an embarassment.
And, after he'd done the spell, she didn't even notice that her voice was gone until she tried to hex him just to get him to shut up. Filangro!, she attempted to say, very annoyed when nothing came out. Grah! Why did he have to be so frustrating? Couldn't he have taught her any other way? Plus, you have to have emotions behind a spell... isn't that what he had said? Well, it wasn't like she could just open up her mouth and ask him. Yes... emotions. Since she didn't really want to hurt him, she couldn't. That was interesting. Maybe it took dire conditions for someone to be able to silently hurt someone else.
"Thanks a lot." She said, glaring at him once he'd finally returned her voice. "Nox. Lumos. Nox. Lumos. Nox. Lumos." Wand lights up. Wand goes dark. Wand lights up. Wand goes dark. What was she supposed to be feeling? It was just a silly little spell, the kind that she'd been doing practically ever since she'd gotten her first wand. The temptation to just immobilize Muryllis and walk away was... well, very tempting. "Nox. Lumos. Nox. Lumos..." Not only was it boring... but it was tedious as well. Finally she just began to twirl her wand inbetween her fingers, watching as little sparks fell off the end.
Maybe his explaination was much too broad; Emotions were usually interpreted as extreme hatred, happiness, the like. "I don't think I explained correctly; it is not as much emotion as just the basic feeling tied into the spell. I'm not saying you must be happy and warm to perform a Lumos; you must feel what is associated with the spell's idea. Likewise, trying to fire a hex off requires the same thing; the idea of doing something to me that I wouldn't necessarily like, not necessarily the idea of hating me and wishing to send me to the Hospital Wing. Try again."
Feel the spell? It still didn't make much sense to her. Continuing to twirl the wand between her fingers, she suddenly threw it up in the air and then caught it underneath her leg. Even that was easier than this silent casting stuff, which she just couldn't grasp. At all. Sighing, she figured that it was worth one more try. Lumos. She thought, eyeing the wand closely. Finally, after a second or two, a little spark appeared and then died. Well, it was certainly better than nothing, and it was definitly better than how she had been doing before. The downside was that she couldn't remember how she'd felt when she casted it.
"I think I got it to work." She said, though the spark hadn't stayed on her wand like the lumos usually did. "Maybe with a little more practice, I'll have it."
Sitting down to continue his experimentation (he still couldn't see anything, no Thread; but he could see that the wand needed a source of energy by how it flickered... ), Muryllis watched Faye try another silent cast of Lumis. Happily enough, she seemed to have gotten it; she seemed to have, for the light died away soon after. Standing back up, he looked again at her wand as she spoke about getting it and needing more practice. "Yes, with a bit more practice, you are sure to master silent casting," he said. "Now, tell me, what is wrong with your wand?" For the wand seemed to be a bit.. beaten up, so to speak. "Maybe the flicker happened because of you wand being in the condition it's in right now; theoretically, when the spell is activated, it should stay that way for however long it's meant to last. What did happen to your wand?"
She took a quick glance down at her wand, which suddenly appeared much more beat up than she had previously thought. It was spellotaped in a few minor places and was scratched, but there were also tooth and claw marks up and down it. This wand had been through hell and back, actually. It was the one that she'd had ever since she was a first year. She had cast her first spell on this wand, and maybe she just couldn't accept the fact that it was too far gone to ever be fixed. It usually worked reasonably well in class... but lately it had gotten rather tempremental when she'd tried to do anything other than schoolwork. Maybe.... maybe it was time for a new one.
"Thirteen inches, rosewood, dragonskin and unicorn hair." She murmered to herself, waving it through the air to create another little trail of sparks. "Hm. I think the tale of it's slow and painful death is one that's just too long for me to tell in full." And too complicated. Some of the scratches were from her entrance hall battle with Michaela, some were from various forest skirmishes. For all she knew, a few of the tooth marks might even be from Fenris himself.
"Do you think I need a new one?" She suddenly said, holding the wand up between thumb and forefinger. "I'll admit, it's nearly seven years old, and these past few years have hardly been kind to it." And... yeah, she probably could have taken better care of it. Right now, she was just desprately hoping that new wands weren't all that expensive.
"Fifteen inches, yew, belladonna-treated dragon heartstring core," he said happily. "I've had this wand since my seventh birthday, and it's never so much as flickered. As for yours," said Muryllis, glancing at the Faye's chewed-up wand, "I think it really would be a good idea to get a new one; I heard that some wandcrafters will cut the price if you ask to use the same core. That is," he added, stealing another glance at her wand, "if the core isn't too damaged; otherwise, reusing it in another wand could be very dangerous." With this, Muryllis couldn't help but remember a good friend of his who had done a lot of Auror work; he ended up getting a new wand with the same core, but that core had been enchanted during a battle. Upon casting a random spell to test out his new wand, it exploded, leaving him in a Muggle hospital for a month; he was armless.
"That aside; since your wand is not in the best of conditions for you to be repeatedly casting the same spell, how about you teach me something?" Hey, it's never a bad thing to learn something new...
Yes, it was a good idea that she should get a new wand. She had been thinking about doing it for a long time, but it hadn't started acting up until now. While she was still at MH, it had been working fine. But it seemed to have gone on the fritz once she'd gotten here. Great. She didn't even know where the closest wand shop was- maybe one of the teachers would be able to point her in the right direction. She had passed a few shops on her way in, so maybe she should try looking there first before going anywhere further.
"Maybe I'll try going later." She replied cheerfully, whipping a roll of spellotape out of her pocket. She then proceeded to take great care in wrapping the wand in it, covering the bite marks until they were hardly visable. Spellotape was so multipurpose, and hopefully it might help the poor wand to work a little bit better. Now... what to teach him?
"What about... Legilimens?" She replied coyly, not entirely sure if it was a good idea. "It allows the other person to see into your mind. Has to do with occulumency and such. I once took a DADA class on it. Supposedly only the most powerful wizards can resist it. Or we could always try something a bit tamer... what about rictusempra?"
The idea of using that spell just made her chuckle. It had been taught to her by an older family friend, who had previously used it to torture people he hadn't liked. The tickling charm, he had called it, and it had always been a useful one for Faye. Especially during a common room pillow fight. thread
Watching her cover the chewed-up wand in Spellotape(tm), he couldn't help but laugh. "I don't think a bad fix like that will do anything to help; you need to get a new wand, pronto," he chuckled. He listened to her proposed spells, weighing each..
"I know Rictusempra," he replied, flicking a momentary one at Faye as he spoke, "and I've heard of Legimense; I have learned how to do a Brainwash Charm, so I get the basic idea of entering another person's mind: our Mentalism professor back at Nostri Magi taught us that very well. As for what we see, the images are much too unclear to be useful; I would, however, like to learn this Legimense; care to teach it to me?"
A better mentalism spell, he thought; finally something really useful.
Legilimency was not something to be taken lightly. It had been taught to her by an old DADA professor, and she had been strictly told to only use it in extreme cases. The mind was a dangerous thing to be messing around with, and some people had memorys that they would rather keep deeply buried. She did have some secrets of her own that she would never tell anyone, and legilimency was the sort of thing that could bring those out. Was it worth the risk? Well...
"Sure." She replied with a small shrug. "Just, if anyone asks, we never did this. I don't think that Talon would approve. It's not the sort of thing that's traditionally done in schools. I'm very suprised that you even know a brainwash charm... they usually save that sort of thing for seventh years, if they teach it at all."
The only reason she had learned a few of the spells having to do with the mind was because she was persistant. She didn't take no for an answer, and after much nagging she always found out what she needed to know. That tended to annoy a lot of people... but what could you do?
"The spell is relatively simple..." She began, begining to slowly pace around Mury. "Some more experienced aurors can do it without even saying the spell, but it's said to be extremely difficult. All you have to do is say 'Legilimens', with your wand pointed at the person's head, while concentrating on what you'd like to find out. It's not hard. You can try on me, if you like.." She had to be careful about this. So, as soon as she said that, she braced her mind and carefully guarded the kind of things she didn't want him to discover.thread
