Let us be frank, the purpose of killzones is to punish new members for being new members and hopefully drive them away to maintain the status quo. Basically, they exist to remind the rest of the site who has been given special out of character powers due to the favor of the administration. It is on the same level as invite only threads in being a detriment to roleplaying. A relic left over from an age of administrative abuse of power.
After all, what credit do any of the reasons for keeping killzones have? (sorry if a bunch of these points are a bit similar, trying to get something out of a murky and insubstantial argument in favor of killzones that can be summarized as "elitist noobery")
--Without them, people will go casually strolling through the zones as if on a nature walk.
Is this a problem? Should people not be allowed to go on a nature walk out in nature? Should they hide from those boards because admin favor says that we will change their profile to saying "dead" if someone given a certain member group one lines saying they don't like them out of character?
Hell, since when is posting EVER a bad thing? I understand that some people might like looking through inactive boards for nostalgia purposes, yet I, for one, don't like the idea of trying to stop people from posting on an RP site. Seems rather counter-productive.
No, this problem should not be solved through killzones. It should be solved by the critter member group in question defending their bit of nature through good role-playing without having to hold the hand of admin favor to do so.
-Scaring new members away from places they shouldn't be?
No. Unless, "firedepth.proboards.com" is the place you think they shouldn't be. If that IS the case, then I don't believe you should be the kind of person to have any sort of out of character power, much less killzone rights.
-Killing irredeemable noobs? Heh, I think we have enough information to clearly see that there are two primary targets of killzones. Supernoobs and clumsy, inarticulate noobs. With the later, they are the kinds who start out a bit bad and sometimes irritating, but then often develop, given time and care, into powerful and respected members. Unfortunately, those are the kinds who, when their character is taken away for out of character reasons (they went into a killzone and a member doesn't like their posting style), they will become discouraged and leave the site, seeing the elitist favoritism for what it is. The former, on the other hand, is quite the opposite. Instead of solving the problem, it makes it EXPLODE into a massive drama-fest.
Take Bloodwing, for instance. I have heard people claiming that it was killzones that managed to get rid of that trainwreck. This is obviously completely wrong. After Bloodwing was killed through a killzone, he got much MUCH worse. Hell, he popped right on back and started causing even more noobery than before. What actually got rid of him was likely the thorough bitching he got in the week or so afterwards.
In other words, killzones make problems worse and drive away potential cool members (but they are perfect for reminding everyone who has been given OOC permission to judge writing and punish people).
-People shouldn't be immortal as long as they feel like it.
...why not? Hell, every character who is alive now is alive for the same reason: The author didn't feel like killing them yet.
Clearly, we've seen that noobs who think they are immortal WILL be immortal. Hell, kill off Zeion in a killzone and THE POWER OF THE KEYBLADE brings him back. Killzones don't kill off immortal overpowered characters, they only make the noobery grow. It is also operating off of the assumption that noobish OP RPers are unable to develop without being killed. A rather noobish notion, if I do say so myself (after all, we could just go get a new pair of jeans instead if we want development- then everything would be all better).
-Finally: People need to learn to fear certain creatures that should be feared and avoid them as a result.
Perhaps it is just me, but that seems like the argument can also be read as: "people should be told how to react to other characters by reason of out of character favoritism instead of in character merit".
To be frank, there are two main reasons that people fear certain boards or creatures:
1) The creatures suck at RPing and are given special out of character authority to try and be somewhat like what they claim.
2) The creatures aren't crap RPers after all.
I have no doubt that the majority of our forsaken critters are decent RPers, so why is it that ANY of them would argue in favor of being given noobish out of character powers?
Let me tell you a story of one RPer. He had no favoritism. He had no real out of character powers (such as a killzone). Hell, he even lost most of the fights he got into. Yet, this character was feared throughout the entire site. People didn't want to get near him, afraid for their characters lives, despite the fact that it was widely apparent he didn't actually have true admin-granted authority to godmod (like being given a killzone!). Jump ahead a few years. This character now has his killzone rights. He hasn't lost a battle in quite some time. Almost universally he is seen as a giant pussy.
Yeah, Fenrir sure has come a long way.
He didn't need out of character permission to godmod (killzone :3) and people still were afraid to incur his wrath, why does he need it now? Why do the vampires need it? Y'know, perhaps he is such a pussy now, it is the only way he still retains authority? Pansy characters retaining authority through out of game decree instead of in character merit? Killzones are crap.
In summary: killzones are only useful for bad RP-ers, and I think we are above using them. People who want them should stop being pussies and learn to be better RPers, both IC and OOC. Video-game auto-lose mechanics have no place in a collective narrative like FFU.
As for whining about your office: I think we decided long ago you were being a whiney pussy baby and wrong about that (at least, no one had a substantial argument to go against Mayu with- though it was only Orca and Sparky arguing, I think).DERP!
