A muffled string of colorful curses broke the sunset stillness. Alarmed, a tiny starling bolted up out of a tree next to the path down to the lake, causing hundreds of its flock mates to take off chattering after it. To the figure kneeling next to the lake edge, surrounded by dozens of different sized bowls of water, the cacophony was eerily reminiscent of the thoughts swirling through her mind at the moment.
She just could not figure out a way to explain this spell to her students. It was slightly complex, true, but for the witch it was an enchantment so simple that she didn't even think while doing it. Like many charms, she could perform it wandlessly and wordlessly.
Obvious proof of this were the myriad of bowls surrounding her. Some had floating flowers; roses, lilies, irises, camillias, gardinias, among others, while others held fish; goldfish, smelt, beta fish, minnows, angelfish could be spotted flitting in their containers. Her thoughts were elsewhere but the fish kept appearing and the flowers kept winking out of existence.
A small glass bowl immediately in front of her held a perfect rose blossom. The body was a pristine yellow while the petals were edged with a bright blood red. As the woman absently stared at it, gleaming in the morning sun, it began to curl in on itself until it folded as it dipped underneath the surface of the water and expanded into a vicious yellow piranha, whose fins were edged with red. The fish nudged the side of the bowl and snapped its teeth in the direction of the woman's fingers.
She rolled her eyes at it and picked up the bowl anyway, as the fish knocked against the glass trying to take a bit out of her, and moved it to the side to make room for a dish containing a deep blue orchid. Absently, she swirled it around, admiring the play of light across the petals before putting it down and staring absently out across the lake at the setting sun as it flashed across the surface. She heaved a sigh and quirked her lips, lost in thought.
