Morgan was enjoying her weekend. She had gone into Drakborough because she had promised to help Malachy get his new shop ready. Still, he could wait. Chang's was Morgan's favorite shop. She always paused in front of the window whenever she had the chance. Today, the window proudly displayed some kneazles that looked like big cats in miniature. Morgan stopped. There, paw against the glass, as though to say 'pick me!', was what looked like a little white tiger cub, albeit with a plumed tail and light mane.
She was so adorable.
Morgan just had to have her. It really was lucky she'd been planning on hitting the sweet shop on her way back to school and had brought plenty of money with her. The little cub was worth three months of chocolate frogs. She made a snap decision. She was going to get that kneazle, and bring her along.
She entered the shop, and set the bells ringing. "Hi, Sylph. Those kneazles are adorable. I especially like the little white one with the stripes." She reached towards the cage, letting the kneazles sniff her hand before attempting to pet them. "How much are you charging for them?"
"Ah." Sylph visibly jumped as the bell rang, looking up suddenly from the newspaper that was spread across the whole of the main counter. "Oh," she said, recovering quickly. "Alright, Morgan? Err, let's see... they're eleven galleons, all in all." The tall witch rose to her feet and took a few easy strides to reach the Ravenclaw girl.
"Very popular those are, just now" she said, smiling as the kittens mewed and allowed themselves to be petted. "I'm thinking of getting one myself." She wiggled her fingers at a bright gold one with jet black rosettes. "Now, which was it - that one, with the stripes?" She leaned down and scooped up the tiny cream coloured fluff ball and handed it to Morgan.
"Now, this one isn't, uh, talking to you, is it?" she asked warily, remembering the last time she had sold Morgan a pet, and thinking about what Malachy had said the other day.

Wow. Eleven galleons was almost enough to buy a cheap broom. Talk about your impulse buy. At least Morgan was certain that there'd be no buyer's remorse afterwards. Even if she had to skip the sweet shop later on.The Ravenclaw Prefect held the tiny kitten close to her, and a name began to suggest itself. But it was best to wait and see if the little kitten's personality suggested a better one.
She didn't want to be stuck with another Mondleid. His name meant 'Moonsong' in German, and she had thought it very beautiful when she had picked it out at age fourteen. Of course, she had given no thought to the fact that he was a male bird, and might not appreciate being named Moonsong, in any language. Still, that was his name, and for better or worse, Morgan found that it suited his personality.
When Sylph asked if the kitten was talking to Morgan, the ivory-haired girl blanched a little. "Oh. I guess the secret's out, isn't it? But, no she's just a baby, her thoughts aren't focused enough yet. I can get little impressions, though. For example, I know she likes me, and you too, for that matter. But, to consciously attempt any kind of focused communication is a little beyond her right now."
Morgan grew thoughtful for a moment, "That isn't to say that when she grows up, she'll think in words, but as a human, that's how I'll interpret her." There, that ought to cover any implied questions Professor O'Dell might have. Of course, it was completely possible that her attempts to explain might have spawned more questions. Still, she was completely taken with her new pet, and pulled her money bag out of her satchel. As she counted out the eleven galleons, while simultaneously trying to keep her tiger look-alike kitten from climbing onto her head, she said, "I think I'm going to call her Nimue."
Sylph nodded slowly whilst Morgan attempted to explain her ability. In all honesty, Sylph had always been a little sceptical of familiars; despite living in a world where myths and magic were real, there were some things that she had simply never grasped as being true. Still, Morgan explained it damn sight better than Malachy had – unsurprising, perhaps, given that she was a Ravenclaw and he a Slytherin – and Sylph smiled at her, showing a hint of the gratitude that she felt at finally understanding things a little better.
“Very Arthurian,” she chuckled, unable to stop herself giggling at the kneazle that was now pawing determinedly at Morgan’s hair as if it was a mouse it wanted to kill. “Appropriate, I guess, for a Pendragon.” A flash of that characteristic Sylph-grin, and the violet haired witch changed the subject back to business. “Are you going to be wanting a collar?” she asked, wondering if people who could speak to animals were more or less likely to tag their pets. “It’s included in the price along with a starter bag of cat food. Or don’t you like to use them?”

"I don't use a collar for Dora, but she's fully grown, and I'm not liable to lose her." And of course, Morgan was careful not to mention that she was also a wolf, and not the dog Morgan had made her look like. "While I'm training Nimue, and especially while she's still little and not used to me yet, I will be using a collar. I wouldn't want her getting lost." Dora and Mondleid were impossible to lose, now that Morgan had spent so much time around them. Well, rather, losing them was more like losing her left arm. It was difficult and painful, but technically possible.
Morgan suddenly had an idea about how to better prepare Dora and Mon for Nimue's arrival. She added a box of something called 'Treshio's Treats For Owls, Hawks, Eagles and Falcons' and a box of dog biscuits to the collar and cat food. Dora might protest them on principle (she disliked having to act like a dog), but Morgan knew that she liked the biscuits. Actually, come to think of it, Dora's protests about being treated 'like a common mutt' were growing less frequent.
"I'll take these too. It can never hurt to show pets a little extra love when introducing a new one." Having set everything down on the counter, she managed, to pluck Nimue from off her shoulder long enough to put her new collar on. It was a light blue one, the same color as the kitten's eyes. "So, how much more do I owe you?"
"Yeah, I know what that's like," Sylph replied, glancing back at the oversized osprey that sat on a perch behind her with sheepish look on her face. "Don't I Dyl', eh?" she added, cooing at the fish hawk. Dylan, for his part, did nothing but ruffle his feathers slightly, clacking his great curved beak, just once.
"You should've seen him when I first took him into this place," she said, turning back to Morgan with a cheery smile and jerking her head back at the osprey. "He couldn't stand the other animals back then. Calmed down a bit now, mind, thank gods. Still, if I got another pet of my own he'd probably try and eat it - he's not exactly the sharing type." Whilst the purple headed witch was chatting away, the food and the collar had appeared on the counter out of thin air, as if by magic.
"That'll be twelve galleons, ten sickles and eight knuts in total," she said, bagging everything up. "And if you have any trouble with the young 'un there - " At this she scratched Nimue behind her elongated ears, causing the kneazle to purr. "Feel free to stop back - or find me up at the school, obviously."
