Dusk bled over the sky, streaking orange and grays, and that funny brown one got when they mixed the two. The early cold nipped at any living being, save the fox scampering around the feet of a robed figure. Shade didn't seem to notice at all, snapping at sluggish moths when they dived too low. Rioku rolled her eyes, hugging her arms to her chest and trying to conserve warmth as she went along. Aconite, not quite awake from his daytime nap, was clinging to her shoulder, staring groggily ahead.
There was a yelp as Shade crashed into a light post, and shaking himself, he was up again in a moment.
"Well, you should pay attention," Rioku scolded, smiling. There wasn't anywhere in particular Rioku felt like going, she was just sort of window shopping. Glancing around, not entering even the shops that were still open. Shade insisted on investigating the feet of everyone who walked by, drawing giggles and wary looks from those he chased after.
Rioku rolled her eyes as he pursued an elderly man, nearly being hit by a cane. The fox barked and ducked again before darting away to hide behind his mistress. Aconite riled himself and dropped off Rioku's shoulder, swooping up to a lamp to snag at the various bugs. Both of them preferred the dark, but dusk most of all.
After a bit they found them in one of the early-closing areas, where perhaps every few shops did a light glow in a front window or such. The Slytherin girl examined a few potion materials lying on a display and examined them with interest. Maybe tomorrow .... nah. She didn't really need anything, and unlike most people, she didn't have endless pocket money.
"Shade?"
Aconite, the silver-furred bat, was clinging to a gutter overhead, yawning. The fox, however, was no where to be seen. After a beat there was a metallic crash and he darted out of an alley, fur bristling. Grinning, laughing in her mind, he dropped a dead rat at her feet. Rioku kicked it away, making a face.
"God, Shade, that's disgusting."
Shade jerked his head skyward, as if looking at something. Halbein. He always did that when gesturing to Halbein, the barn owl Rioku kept in her room. Rioku scowled at him.
"Halbein eats mice, and he doesn't bring them to me first," she shot back. Shade rolled his eyes and trotted away again. "Don't go far! We're leaving soon." 971971
