You Make My Dreams (song)
Sparky walked out of the inn, mostly ignoring the old lady who tended the front desk who gave him a knowing smile. Things were quiet, and the morning looked gray as usual. A couple of birds were flying by, battered old cat was lounging on a box nearby. whatever. Your usual drakborough scene. It was quiet, it was morning.
And then it started to sink in.
No, it wasn't him seeing Dolphin's naked back as he walked out of the bathroom that did it. It wasn't the disarray the room and bed was in.
It was him walking out of the door, leaving the inn.
He felt it on his face, something foreign, something... Something weird.
His lips twitched for a couple seconds, and then... There it was.
A smile.
A big one.
A big, happy, stupid smile.
And with that, he started walking down the street, stepping on the sidewalk like it was a red carpet. He walked past an older woman, with lighter, seldom-described hair, and she smiled back at him. How nice! She wasn't a bitch to him! Was it because he smiled at her? Did she just know? He couldn't help it. As he left her, trotting off on her high heels in the distance, he just kept walking.
Today... Was a good day. Fuck 'going to be'. It just was.
He stepped over the stones, past the fountain. Thought it was December, and there was a chance of snow and ice, the fountain was operational. It let out a few jets, water reaching up through the sky, and he felt his heart soar along with it. What had he been thinking? It was a beautiful day.
A demure looking, darker haired young man walked towards him, accompanied by a larger black man. They both paused in their conversation--Sparky thought he caught either the words 'cornbread' or 'wheat bread'--and smiled at him.
Sparky did something very uncharacteristic of him.
"Hi!"
Surprisingly, they both greeted him back, the tall black man even going so far as shaking his hand. No introductions, just a good old howdy do. It was nice. He'd never tried that before. Sparky kept walking.
He passed a small cafe, which had a radio sitting on a table outside, set to an upbeat 80's station (He didn't even know they had those in Spain!). A surprisingly short, brown-haired woman with a lot of long, elegant curls suddenly grabbed his hands, bringing him into a simple box-step dance, and, feeling a little strange, Sparky went along with it, starting to enjoy himself. A few repeats, and a quick mutual bow later, the short woman was spinning off to find another victim, apparently in her own musical montage of some sort. Grinning, Sparky left the scene, continuing his walk.
As he walked, he came upon a boy and his cat. Well, he assumed it was his cat, after all, he was holding it and talking to it! Now, talking to animals, even in the magic world, is generally looked down upon. But Sparky, with his experience with Teagan the Second (not that one!) knew how it was. Sometimes, pets were just your friends. So, when they came a little closer, he smiled. It was a cute scene! (Did he hear the boy say something about llamas? Man, did that cat look bored!) When the cat spotted him, however, it started meowing, reaching out to him with his little paw. Aww.
It was strange, really. Animals usually hated him!
Sparky reached out a hand, grabbed one soft, squishy kitten paw, shook it, and went on his way.
It wasn't long before he came across two firefox students walking his way. From the look of their clothes and their non-mysterious, non-arrogant, non-Ravenclaw smiles, they were obviously Gryffindors. One of them seemed to recognize him, and when they met, he offered his fist. Though Sparky wasn't exactly 'hip', he knew when a fist bump was being offered, and Sparky accepted it. The younger girl just smiled graciously at them until they finished their very male ritual, and then they, too, were on their way.
As he walked past a school-yard of sorts, a ball landed by his feet. Though he normally would have ignored it, Sparky leaned down and picked it up. He saw that there were a few kids and one shady looking adult--was he wearing a mask? How festive!--were playing some sort of wizard-ball. Smiling, Sparky chucked it back towards them and, once again, went on his way.
He couldn't remember ever being this happy. There were probably times, yes, that came close, but he felt like everything was finally going to go right for him. It felt like... Well, it felt like his time had come. It was a good day, it was a good week, it was a good month, and it would be a good year. That's how good he felt.
And as he stepped, surprisingly, he didn't slip and fall once.
He headed towards the school, a changed man.
