It was amazing how uncomfortable Micha became at being called nice. Leonora was especially surprised when she revealed that she was the only one to have said that. Had she been the first to ever see through the cloak of bitterness and withdrawal that Micha Volkov wore? She understood, from the way she acted, that the dark haired girl in front of her wasn't exactly the easiest person to get along with, but had there never been anyone who'd tried to give her a chance?
Well, Whites had tried to give her a chance. He'd given her many chances. More chances than Leonora would've given her, and Micha hadn't just turned them down but she'd also bullied him incessantly. Why was she so nice to Leonora and so cruel to him? Did she think that Whites, her goofy roommate, was going to hurt her? She'd hardly known the guy for more than a month, but imagining him hurting anyone just seemed farfetched.
Leonora's eyes lit up at Micha as she asked her question, content to see the smile on her face. It was true that the rarer things were, the more valuable they became, or at least it was so with Micha's smile. Leonora couldn't recall ever seeing a prettier expression on anyone than the one on her friend. "I don't think I'm so different," Leonora said honestly, "than anyone else. Everybody's unpredictable. People can help you and people can hurt you, and some people go out of their way to help you and some people go out of their way to hurt you..." She smiled all the while, her expression unchanging in order to show Micha how serious she was, "...but I think that's why it's important to get to know people."
She took a sip of her hot chocolate before continuing, "I mean if everybody was the same way, and you just know the things everybody's going to say...it'd just be boring. It's almost like why I came to Firefox. If you can expect the same thing day in and day out then it gets boring after a while. If you can expect that everybody's going to like you and help you, eventually you'll just get tired of people, and..." she gave Micha a glance, "...if you expect people are just going to hurt you all the time, then I imagine that gets pretty boring too. You start finding everybody boring, because you haven't gotten the chance to realize how much good they can bring you."
She stopped then, her brown eyes incredibly serious, and took another sip of her drink.
