Leon walked out onto the Quidditch Field in his plain black robes, his Gryffindor badge conspicuously absent. He didn't want it poking and prodding him as he flew - which was what he was going to be doing this afternoon. It was a rather cloudy day, but the air was dry and the wind was low. He carried a borrowed school broom under the crook of his right arm, and in his left hand he held the top of his Great Horned Owl's cage.
Virginia, his owl, was going to be joining him.
This was mostly for her sake. She'd been on edge ever since they first left Salem, and it wasn't because of the long trip. She wanted to get out of her cage, and the entire trip she'd been confined to it. Leon didn't want her out flying by herself though. He knew that wizard's owls, Virginia included, were very smart and could fly long, seemingly impossible, distances to deliver mail for their masters, but they were both strangers to this part of the world and Leon just felt uncomfortable with letting her out all on her own.
Leon wasn't exactly the most talented flyer, however. He knew how to fly one since all first years at Salem were given lessons in it, but American wizards and witches rarely had a reason to use it. Almost no new world wizard or witch would actually fly from place to place on a broom unless they were out in the wilderness, and Quidditch was completely replaced in popularity by Quodpot. Not that there wasn't a Quidditch team at Salem, but Leon wasn't on it. Quodpot was his game.
For that reason, he didn't even own his own broom. This time on this borrowed broom was the first time he'd been on a broom since his final exam in Flying Class four years before. Since they didn't have Quodpot in Spain (yet,) he supposed he'd have to practice flying if he was going to play sports here. Maybe this was for his own good, as well as Virginia's. He dropped the broom onto the ground and opened the owl's cage. He reached in and pulled her out, and as soon as she was free she gave a few great flaps of her mighty wings and soared off into the sky. "Wait, Gin!" shouted Leon, and then held his hand over the piece of wood. "Up!" He commanded, and the broom rose up into his hand. He mounted it, and flew off into the sky after his friend.
"You...I'm gonna catch you!" He said, and laughed, but the broom gave a great jerk. "Yikes!" He said, and he did a barrel roll, clutching the wood tightly. "Don't...don't go so high, okay Gin?" he shouted after the owl, but Virginia made no sign of hearing him. She was gonna fly however she wanted, and if her friend and master wanted to keep up, he was going to have to try harder. She gave a mocking hoot to him and then glided down towards the right.
Leon, taking a deep breath, soared after her.
