History:
This is the quick version I jotted down at 4AM, so I still need to have a couple key people look it over and tell me if I got anything skewed or missed anything.....
Azrael started off life being the second born of two highly religious Amish muggles, the Jeremiahs. Azrael was, from the very beginning, rather different than any other normal children; much unlike his elder brother Faust who, much to his parents relief, was at first as regular a child as they could have hoped for. Azrael always had an almost zealous fixation on death and bore a certain affinity for obtaining knowledge on matters that had yet to even occur. Unfortunately, due to their strict religious beliefs, his parents thoughts were only to decide whether this was some divine gift or a Satanic influence upon their youngest child; and if it were of darker origin, then how to expunge the “evil“ from their son.
As Azrael grew, he began to become aware of the fact that he was unlike the other children, and was able to know things no one else could know and generally influence his surroundings to his own convenience. Made an outcast from his peers by his own powers, he did not grudge this fact, instead believing himself above them; reinforced by the fact that his brother showed no signs of any of the powers Azrael commanded, which caused him to have a complete fascination with his younger brother’s abilities.
While his parents found themselves busy catering to the needs of Azrael’s younger sister, Azrael himself began experimenting with his powers, testing them to their limits and generally using his brother to test various new experiments on; seeing everyone else, including his family, as nothing more than tools to help him along the path he chose for himself.
When his parents finally found out what Azrael had been up to, they decreed his actions as the most vile of blasphemy and tried to confine Azrael to his room, providing him with few possessions, one of which being a bible with which they hoped to “properly” educate him. So Azrael read through the bible, reading passage after passage, disagreeing with nearly it’s entirety. The only information that seemed to interest him at all was the reference to his own name; that of the angel of death. With this knowledge catalogued away in his mind, he threw the book away, deeming it beneath him.
Eventually, when Azrael reached his teens, having for years practiced his arts only in secret, his parents decreed him to be free of the Satanic taint upon him and started to encourage him to expand his mind, buying him textbooks and all manner of educational trinkets, including a miniature chemistry set.
Fascinated with working out how one thing reacted with another, he decided to bring both his magical powers and his petty knowledge of sciences together and see what he might be able to accomplish. While attempting to create fire, by creating the essence of the Soul of Salamander- which, according to alchemy, is the fire elemental; he failed miserably, setting his entire family estate up in a mighty blaze, seemingly unquenchable by any regular means. His mother and father died in that blaze, unable to escape the magical flames, while his sister’s body was never even recovered, and was deemed to have been completely destroyed. Faust, who had been working with Azrael at the time, was affected the most unusual way by the initial magical blast that had given rise to the fire; his soul being severed from his body even as the flames consumed it. Azrael himself was barely able to escape using his magical abilities; ending up severely wounded both magically and physically.
The Ministry, almost immediately reacting, yet unable to detect who had caused the tragedy, arrived on the scene to find the charred remains of Azrael’s parents with no culprit in sight. Azrael himself spent many years recovering from his wounds and attempting to erase his past, becoming a well-respected public servant, helping out the town where he had taken residence in any way he could, while in secret developing his own skills without any proper tutelage.
It was by mere coincidence that Azrael managed to stumble back to the remains of his house, which had lain untouched since the day he had left; finding in the burnt-out shell of his former home a letter of invitation to some strange place called “Magic Horizons”, addressed to his sister. It was through this letter that Azrael was first introduced to the wizarding world; and also how he managed to wind up with his first job teaching divination at that very same school.
It couldn’t have been a more fortunate time for Azrael to come to teach at Magic Horizons, for a dark wizard named Danawi was at that time threatening the school, while wielding great power and influence. Always the brilliant opportunist, Azrael quickly seized this opportunity to gather vast amounts of power to himself, forming his own special group known as “The Cabal”, which he outwardly made show that it’s purpose was the help the school, while his own special few within the Cabal knew it’s true nature. Most notably of whom was the vampire Israfel, who had the secret mission of deposing the tyrannical headmistress Claire which would, in the absence of the true headmistress, Wilting Rose, would put Azrael at the top of the list of successors. It was also at this time, initially during a skirmish with a lesser demon known as Isaac that Azrael first met and quickly befriended Talon Windwaltz.
Unfortunately, even as Azrael moved against Danawi, Claire saw Azrael’s popularity and power and realized the threat he posed, being at that time more of an influential individual than she herself could ever hope to become; and thus she stripped him of his position of teacher and cast him from her school. Azrael’s reputation was ruined and, although he had succeeded in staving off the invasion by Danawi, it was Wilting Rose who dealt him his deathblow and thus Azrael was given none of the credit he deserved.
While in exile, Azrael began to rebuild his Cabal with what few loyalties he could dredge up, yet only from those who would help him get his revenge upon the headmistress who cast him out. Most notable among his servants was Fenris Fenrir, the mightiest lycan yet seen upon those grounds. Israfel, too, remained with him, along with a new vampire named Romulus and an ice demoness named Xailyn.
His core group reformed, he sent out his minions to sow terror and confusion at the school that had turned it’s back on it’s savior, naming himself “Angelus Morti”; meaning “Angel of Death” after his namesake and giving himself the title of Lord. Fenrir quickly became known throughout the school, as his became the name everyone feared, leaving a trail of violence wherever he passed on Azrael’s orders.
Unable to defeat the great wolf alone, Talon set off in search of his old ally Azrael, yet found to his dismay Azrael’s true identity. Refusing the offer Azrael extended to join him, Azrael put Talon into a supposedly eternal sleep and imprisoned him within the graveyard., followed soon after by the replacement divinations professor Amy Stevens.
A young Gryffindor by the name of Aylen Hawkins attempted to rouse up a resistance to the Angelus Morti, along with Talon’s own father; Trajan Helion. Seeking out the Angelus Morti in the graveyard along with another student named Sen, they were met by Fenrir himself. Able to crush any single of them alone, Fenrir would surely have lost to their combined strength if not for the fact that both Trajan and Sen revealed themselves to be traitors; imprisoning Aylen along with Amy and Talon.
Unstoppable, with all attempts at opposition being swiftly crushed, it looked with near-certainty that Azrael would destroy the school or take it for himself, yet one event occurred that he had not foreseen. Talon, escaping by some means Azrael had not predicted, fled to establish his own school; who Azrael, in a strange twist of fate, followed; leaving the mortally wounded Magical Horizons to slowly decline and die off of it’s own accord.
Once again, Azrael began to establish himself, disguising himself with an advanced bit of transfiguration as the Professor Vincent Alington to infiltrate the school; yet the appearance of another group calling itself the Society of Shadows disrupted his plans and he sat back to observe instead, leaving Fenrir to act on his own.
