Snow was promised. Maybe not anytime soon, but in the future .... always. Gabriel sat on the curb, toes curled over the side of the walk. His shoes, a battered pair of converses, rested on the concrete beside him. Although there were no promises, he seemed to be humming to himself under his breath. Not a tune in particular, every time it turned to something in the least recognizable it spun off into something else. At one point it might have even been the itsy bitsy spider.
Or something.
Gabriel felt a chill sweep down the street. His fingers tightened around the warm cup made from Styrofoam, steam rising off the top of the frothy surface. He'd aquired it from a shack of a coffee shop somewhere down the street - he wasn't quite sure where exactly. His memory seemed to have done that thing again, where it hid itself in a cloud. Dusk had fallen awhile ago, but Gabriel hadn't really noticed. At some point a little street lamp had kicked on.
Why weren't there many people out? Huh. He'd heard rumors about stuff, some girl with blood coming out of her eyes. Lots of weird stuff. Gabriel sipped his coffee and made a face. Nasty. After a bit Gabriel glanced over, finding a drain in the side of the street, and dumped it down. The liquid made a light hiss against the ground, gurgling as it vanished underground. Gabriel watched it seep out of sight, and at some point he had stopped humming.
He sat back up straight, the cup rolling down the street in the breeze. Frost-worthy air nipped at his nose, but he didn't seem to notice. Oh well. Subconsciously, Gabriel had begun to trace the scars down the side of his face.
Windswept is the shore, heatwave to nightshade .... And then just as suddenly the lyrics vanished, the tune spiraling away. For a second time it faded, and Gabriel tapped his fingers on the sidewalk. Eyes like quicksilver flicked down the street, finding vague shapes in the distance but not really registering them.
Today was one of his good days. Kind of, sort of.
