He had expected heavy lossses when the Inferi had gone berserk and ravaged the Triangle Tunnel, but once the numbers started coming in things were quite different. At least 80% of all the occupants had been killed and subsequently had to be put down before they too transformed into inferi. It was gruesome work, but someone had to get the job done and that fell on his shoulders. Everything that befell that resident of this city, Julian had placed both the blame and the responsibility on himself: he had been in charge of security and had falled to protect these people.
The Maltan knew that he owed it to them to do whatever was in his power to rebuild and recreate what once was. There was limited ICW aid to Iberia, after all of the misfortune that had occurred during Plutus' term, and they were unwilling to invest any more until they saw new results. So he had what few personnal still remained in Spain, and his first task was clearing the wreckage. The surviving residents had been scavaging among the ruins for their belongs and once they were clear aurors used reducto spells to clear the burnt timber. After about two days of this work, they still only managed to clear about a quarter of the Tunnel completely and this was the "Safe Zone".
Temporary housing had been setup there and the portion of the security gird that had once been in place had be restored. The rules were simple: never leave the zone alone and never go out after dark. Forbes wasn't willing to take any more risks, and when people saw him he was on constant alert and over-working himself. Rumors circulated around the area that the Chief Auror hadn't gotten a decent night's sleep in several days, but he could forego sleep for now. He'd sleep once he knew they were safe and even then it would be with one eye open.
He was currently resting in his quarters when a knock on the door awoke him up. Grabbing his wand off of his counter, the dark-haired man said, "Enter" and two aurors entered the room. "It's time for the 11 pm patrol Chief. If we disturbed you, we can bring Marcus and Gilbert along instead," said one of them. Shaking his head, Forbes climbed out of bed and gestured that they wait outside the door and that he'd be joining them. It took him five minutes to change into his offical garb and he left fully armed with the two men.
As they strolled down Warlock Rd the occasional shadow caught his eye, but it was nothing more than a trick of the mind. Yet with the information that he and Bismarck now knew: there was more lurking in the shadows than just mind tricks. The two aurors were tense as they continued down the road and the one that spoke before talked again. "Chief, you know you don't have to be out here. The people think that you've already done enough good and that you should take a break."
Julian halted and briefly looked over his shoulder, and replied briefly before continuing on the rest of the patrol.
"There is no such thing as enough in my dictionary: there is only too little or you didn't try hard enough. These people deserve more than I can give them, and so I will not rest until I see that debt repaid."
