Diamond running ahead of her, Rezna made her way across the library bookshelves, trying to find a table at which to study. Had anyone known her purpose in coming, they would have said that fate was being dreadfully ironical towards the Hufflepuff girl. However, she had long resigned herself to fate's cynical jokes, and that evening she would not have given the irony of her situation more attention than the usual few seconds it took for her mind to comprehend it.
No, that evening, Rezna wanted to relax in the library which she was sure would have more movement and noise then her room back in the dorms. Years ago, the blond girl had also walked up into the library as the night drew on and met her best friend. Now though her best friend Anna was still there, things were much different.
Lately, a cloud of loneliness surrounded Rezna. At night, she dreamed of her old friends; Carmen, Aylen, Shae, Wyl, and even newer friends like Ondrea, Fenris, Kenneth, and Faith. During the day, Rezna would find herself searching for those friends that had gotten ever dearer to her heart since she came to Firefox. However, fate seemed to have looked in on her life at that point to, for as soon as Rezna grew happy at the University, those she cared for disappeared. Anna and Faye just didn't seem to be around. Forgoil seemed to have distanced himself from her. Charlotte, Rezna only saw in classes. And as for Roan, she had all but disappeared.
A meow brought Rezna to a halt as her green eyes scanned out her Russian Blue cat, the only one who never truly left her. He sat on top of a small table that was wedged between two rows of bookshelves and the outer wall of the library, almost hidden from view. Coming to sit by Diamond, Rezna took out her homework and stared at it with a dis-focused gaze. Her mind was simply not on her Charms paper.
Perhaps it is something I did that drove them away, Rezna thought as she stared into space. Or, perhaps it is something that I failed to do. And hadn't there been a trillion instances when she let her friends down. Talking she was good at, but when it came to taking action, Rezna was unsuccessful. She tried to defend her friends and classmates, but she never succeeded in saving them from pain. It seemed all Rezna could do was cause it.
"Worthlessness is a horrible thing," she then told Diamond who had come to rub his head comfortingly against her arm. "But nothing I seem to do ever changes that."
The cat purred softly in response. Again he gently rubbed her hand, as if trying to show her that he knew what she needed, but could not give it to her. No cat, lest it not be a feline, could change into one of her friends.
With each passing minute, the blond grew more distant and less focused on doing her work. Soon the lights in the library dimmed, but she still had not moved from her spot. Diamond moved to sit at the head of the table, acting as a guard for his mistress's body, for her mind seemed to be elsewhere. Night fell, and midnight drew up on the pair that even the librarian did not notice.
This place might be as quiet as the Common Room, but at least the air here is breathable, Rezna thought, a sad sigh escaping through her pale lips. At least here I'm not plagued by ghost memories of Hufflepuffs long gone or invisible to me. And even if I wished to seek out those invisible few, I'd have as much luck finding them in a locked library as the Common Room, I fear.
