Yamaroshi took the waves as a 'no'. He fell on his back in frustration, then placed his hand on his forehead and dragged it down along his face, clawing it with his fingertips. The lack of the usual stubble reminded him of his state; ten years old, weak and helpless. Though he realized it probably would not have made much difference, he wished he had his usual nineteen year old body.
He sat there for a few seconds, contemplating how to complete this trial. Obviously, he couldn't mow a lawn that wasn't there, not that it really had anything to do with water magic. He considered that it might not have been one of the trials he had to undergo for water magic, but that seemed unlikely. What ever the case may have been, he was trapped until he figured out what he was supposed to do.
Yamaroshi finally sat up. If it was a book of water, whatever he had to do involved water. It also had something to do with mowing the lawn, as little sense as that made.
One thing that seemed clear to Yamaroshi was that he could not move as long as he was in the dingy. He might be able to shift is weight around to make it turn a little, but that was all. His first thought was to jump into the water, but that was risky, because if the waves came back, he might not be able to get back into the dingy. He thus started by placing his hand into the water. Maybe the waves would alert him if this was not what he was supposed to do.

When Yamaroshi placed his hand into the water, the waves did not respond in any matter. The ocean remained just as calm as it had ever been.
However, when the Earth Mage would eventually lift his hand again, he'd find the hairy, calloused hand of a nineteen year old, not the smooth paw of the child attached to his arm.

Yamaroshi held his breath until he realised for the time his hand was in the water. He did not immediately notice that his hand had changed after he pulled it out. When he did, however, he flinched in surprise.
He didn't think much about his next move. He wanted his nineteen year old body back. And so, he threw is right leg over the edge of the dingy and twisted his body so he was completely under water. He waited a second before removing his head from the sea. Finally, he held his hands in front of him to see if it had worked.

When Yamaroshi twisted himself over the dingy, everything seemed fine at first. Each part of his body that hit the brine waves was restored to their original state, and eventually the man was back to being who he was before...in the middle of a chaotic sea. The peaceful, formerly calm yet angst-ridden waves had been replaced by gigantic, terrifying tidal waves, leaving the poor Elementalist destined to drown if he didn't do something soon.

As Yamaroshi had expected, he had his proper body back. This was a good thing. Or at least it was at first. Suddenly the ocean had gone crazy again, as it had before. His first thought was that he had done something wrong, as the waves seemed to imply before. He went to grab onto the boat, and discovered it was gone.
He panicked at first, but managed to keep himself afloat. His life began flashing before his eyes, but not for very long because the first image he saw just happened to be of him sitting next to his father in their living room during the summer of one of the years he was still in school. They were watching a program about tsunamis, and how they were often created by earthquakes.
Then he realised a possible way out. He struggled to face the direction the waves were flowing, and somehow keeping himself above water, thrust his arms and legs forward before, shouting Terrae Motus as loud as he could manage before being engulfed by the water. A massive fissure appeared in the ground, causing a powerful shock wave to hit the waves head on, which would hopefully slow them down enough that he could pull himself back up to the surface.

Yamaroshi's last ditch plan to stop the waves seemed to work, but in a bizarre way. The huge fissure in the Earth worked almost like a drain on a bathtub, causing the waves to not only stop moving, but to start decreasing in height. Then the really strange part happened. Instead of the water predictably collapsing into the fissure, it was actually entering the Elementalist's skin - as if he were some kind of sponge.
After a good while, Yamaroshi was left alone in a desert of sand and shells, the water completely absorbed into him.

Apparently his move worked. The water had calmed down considerably. It took a short while for him to realise what was happening. The water level was decreasing. It took a long time to finish, and in that time he realised that he had 'mowed the lawn' as he was supposed to.
He had expected, however, for the trial to end and to be holding a book with a crazy kid in front of him wondering why he was staring mindlessly at a book. He was rather disappointed when the water drained (apparently into his skin) and he was standing at what used to be the bottom of the ocean. He was not stumped for long, however, as he remembered what his mother had told him. He was done mowing the lawn, so next was the dishes.
"I'm done mowing the lawn!" he shouted only for self satisfaction.
