Sparky fidgeted on the edge of the counter in the Library, near the entrance. He had come to see the Librarian, Shane Matthews. He'd actually never had a proper conversation with the man, but he had made eye-contact once or twice sometime in his life, he was sure. At least, he knew his name and vague description... It was Blaine, right? Something-ane. Shamu?
He sighed. He hoped he wouldn't have to actually use his name... If possible he'd like to avoid being embarassed.
He wouldn't have even come if he hadn't finally had to succumb to a nagging curiosity that had lurked in the back of his mind for years.
It was his Book. With a capital B. His safety blanket. His rescue when things went badly. His 'friend'.
He just had no idea what the hell it was.
It was a book, with a dusty, dirty looking cover [no matter how well he had attempted to take care of it]. On the front page had three squiggles on it, which sort of shimmered in a dull, blue way. When opened, it bathed the "reader" in the same light, oddly comforting and... smooth in feeling. It made Sparky feel... comfortable, as if nothing was terribly awesome or terribly horrible, but just... plain. Good. Fine.
He had spent many a night, simply staring at the odd squiggles and shapes in the book, blue light glowing up at him as the moon passed through the sky before the sun could come back for it, always shouting 'Goddamn moon! GET BACK HERE'. Perhaps the moon stole something of the Sun's... Who knew.
Anyway, Sparky had finally decided to risk having his Safety Blanket taken from him and try to find out what it was. He had only a few options for people to go to and ask, and those were, in order:
Talon Windwaltz, crazy dude who was never there
Teagan Monolayre, answer to everything but sadly this particular angel hated him
Shane Matthews, some dude in the library that no one knew
He went with the third option.
Finally, deciding no one would come if he didn't actually call for someone, Sparky spoke up.
"Erm... Hello...?" He said, in a low whisper. The book was on the counter in front of him, and he kept a hand lightly resting on the cover as he leaned on the counter. He was still nervous just bringing the thing to the outside world, let alone showing it to someone he didn't know at all.
He didn't even know how he got the book in the first place.
Basically, what he remembered was that it was from some sort of relative he really did not remember meeting. He'd had it a long time, and details grew fuzzy. For some reason, the thought of the relative just brought up the word 'Jousting' and nothing else.
Was his relative a horse?
Either way, he was hoping the librarian would come soon and keep him from going insane.
