Years ago Roan never thought she’d have to creep into her own school. It used to be nothing to walk through that arch and into the stone corridors of what used to be her home. But now she found herself entering the University under stealth. Though she figured she wasn’t an enemy to those inside and she hoped that she was still on good terms with the administrators of the school such as Talon and Sylph she didn’t want to take chances with students and the Ministry. She didn’t look as young as she used to and a student might be taken aback by a strange woman entering the school. And yet she wanted to go back, and not just for some nostalgia. The best way to do it was by aid of one of her companions.
The dragons didn’t get out much. Aiden was actually quite fat and lazy (well, if the creature could get fat he would) and did a lot of lazing in front of the fire and sleeping. Song was more restless and liked to go flying in the Woods and other places but that was more reasonable because her powers could hide her from sight. And they could also hide Roan. The lycaness left her more brightly colored dragon at her home in Drakborough and left that evening with Song on her shoulder, covering her from the eyes of all around her as she went to the school.
Being a lycan helped with her movement and she was able to move quietly in and out of students who were leaving from their dinner. Only once did she nearly stumble and that was when some bookworm dropped a pile of their homework directly in front of her and she had to stop abruptly. A tiny gasp may have escaped her lips, but she quickly darted around the boy and headed for the staircase. At least the school was still familiar to her.
Roan was headed to the Library, somewhere she used to hang out when she was a student. Aiden was created there, and Muryllis had been found there once. The ex-Hufflepuff was a lover of books and as such had her own mini-library back at her home in a converted guest bedroom. There were books however that she did not possess and when the girl started to go on a mission she usually turned to the more knowledgeable writers.
Climbing the staircases and slipping into the Library with Song purring on her shoulders the girl quietly headed through the stacks of books. There were things she would have loved to use in her past when learning new spells was one of the greatest pleasures in life. And now it just caused a brief pang to her heart that she would never be able to do that. The brunette ignored that and headed right to the section she wanted…one that contained books with information on some of Firefox’s more vicious neighbors, including the ones plaguing her.
“Okay Song, go ahead and drop it. Just keep an eye out.” Roan whispered quietly as she became visible again. She wore plain muggle clothing, jeans and a red t-shirt. There was light backpack slung over one shoulder and a pouch that hung at her waist. Muryllis’ phylactery hung there, pulsing and waiting for the return of the one who owned it. Roan still carried it out of hope these days. Her fingers brushed the spines of the books in front of her with reverence as she searched for ones she wanted.
A grin crossed her face as she found one on lycans. Out of curiosity she removed the tome and flipped through it finding gruesome illustrations of transformation and packs of lycans hunting humans. “Well, this is the literature that Talon keeps in his school. Wonderful.” Roan said sarcastically as she replaced the novel looking for one of the more blood sucking variety. She found several, removing the books from their shelved place and noting their position. One she found was particularly old and had the simple engraving of Nosferatu on the cover. With several books in hand she found a secluded book in the Library and pulled a worn notebook and pen out of her backpack.
Time to start research.
Flipping through the texts brought back old days of pouring over books in the middle of the night to desperately find ways to try and help her friends. Well now Roan was trying to help herself. A particularly annoying mosquito was still in her life and she would prefer to be rid of him and his flock, however that would be. She knew typical vampire weaknesses, but Romulus was a tricky vampire. And she wanted all the knowledge and help she could get. Roan was prepared to pour over histories and accounts of people finding the beasts and either over coming them or dying to help her find some advantage over her old lover. And hopefully one day see his corpse make its last move.
Song was calm, perched on the edge of the wooden table among the open books looking serene as ever and keeping look out. If by some chance a student were to walk into the back of the library late at night she would look like nothing but a beautiful statue of a black dragon. For after all, she was made of stone. Roan’s pen scratched quietly across notebook paper. She hardly used a quill and parchment anymore after losing her wizarding magic. Fire elementalism hardly qualified her for the wizarding world anyways so why pretend.
Her reading took her across a mention of the Castille, the very place she abhorred. It wasn’t a long note at all, and the writer wasn’t even sure it existed. Boy would he be shocked if he knew that place did and it was infested with these vile creatures. Roan shook her head and mumbled under her breath. “Maybe I should just blow the whole damn place to the ground…” She didn’t get to mumble much more before her pen stopped abruptly on the paper. Lycan senses came in handy and she not only could hear, but could smell someone approaching in her direction. The girl tensed up, not quite sure what to do in the situation. Maybe pretend to be a student? Roan might be able to pass as a 7th year, even though she looked a bit older than her 18 years.
“Hello?” The lycaness said quizzically, hoping it was just a random student passing through the library at night for some studying. One could never be sure at Firefox with dangerous creatures prowling about.588
