Oh... my head. James awoke in the Hospital Wing, a mass of bruises and with aching head, hand, and leg. Tobias had really done a number on him. Selther had been free to go after 20 minutes. James on the other hand, had to be held over night, to make sure he didn't have brain damage or something.
He had been going over it in his mind and he he know knew how Tobias could move like he did. He had remembered the ability from a book of Dark Magic. He had found it in China, around the time he was 10. He had been learning to speak and read the language, so he was eager to try it out. He hadn't known what he was reading until he got to some of the more gory details. He never told his father about it and even found two more books, one in English and the other in Chinese. He just wanted to know the powers of a Dark Wizard so he could learn how to counter their abilities. The ability in question was labeled under Shadow Magic in the English book, but had no official name, only a title in badly translated Chinese; a lot had such names this book was translated from Chinese. The title was "Shadow Tunnel." The pictures in the book described it in great detail and now he was sure he had seen it in action. He's involved with the Shadows somehow, I just know it. This is not good.
When he was eight, he had trained with a Hindi guru--who also happened to be a wizard. He was taught to meditate, so that he could gain greater control of his powers. The guru's, Dahaslim, aura was so powerful, James's own abilities were magnified tenfold. While meditating, he managed to achieve something amazing. He was able to see—for that was the simplest way to explain what really happened—magic, in its true form. That vast, endless reservoir from which all wizards and witches drew their powers. He witnessed it, in all its glory. He was never the same since.
Later on, when he was twelve, training with Master Hiroshi Takanawa, he was shown how to tap into it without a wand. A wand was just a medium, he was taught, that allows a wizard to control magic. It is essentially unneccesary, but the majority of the magical community find it essential. They are unable to let go of preconceived notions that they absolutely need it. It was just a jumping off point for much vaster powers. Only once did he acheive it, and it had scared him. Wielding magic in its most raw, unhindered form was amazing and terrifying to him.
I was too scared to do it then. Now...I've matured. I can do this He was going to attempt to re-learn it. Okay, here goes nothing, remember what Hiroshi showed you. Remember the true magic. Remember the feeling. He concentrated on this image, thought on it hard. He stretched his arm out and concentrated on a cup across the room. A visible ripple of...something went through the air and knocked the cup off the table it was on. It fell to the floor and shattered. Wow. He felt a little spent, wielding magic in its purest form was a really intense experience. But he remembered that reservoir was infinite, and would never leave him completely wasted, unless he believed it would. A wizard's powers were only limitited by his own imagination.
A voice spoke up next too him.
"How did you do that?"
