First post is for Aednat.
Darkness and fevered dreams were all James knew, lying in the Hospital Wing. Abruptly, he awoke crying out "WHY!?" Tears streamed from his eyes and he was panting and sweating like mad. He lashed out with nonexistent blades at invisible monsters. It had been days since he had fallen into unconsciousness on that battlefield. He looked around warily; he felt he couldn't trust his surroundings. They had won, they had to have. Their sheer numbers... What kind of game were they playing?
Looking around, he saw many of the beds were curiously empty. It seems the Shadows left very few injured. It was the clean kill for them. Something he and they had in common, unfortunately. He had no sympathy for those goddamn monsters. Child killers. Though of course he calmed down at this. He was alive after all. Somehow, good had prevailed once more against evil.
To his surprise, situated in the bed next to him was Alexan! He had survived apparently, though he was in worse shape than James. He appeared to be in a coma. James attempted to rise from his own bed, so he could be by his friend’s side. He was hindered by sharp pains that ran through his body, originating at his left shoulder and right thigh. Ah yes, he remembered now. He had been stabbed and had passed out from blood loss. His last act had been to shield Alexan’s unconscious form from the blows that the Shadows rained down upon them.
How had he gotten here? What stopped the Shadows from killing them? Then, in a flash, he Saw it. He fell unconscious and the Shadows prepared to deliver the coup de’grace. Then, James began to rise. He floated in mid-air; a sort of shield had formed around him and the Shadow’s spells were absorbed into it. His eyes glowed blue and the runes and symbols glowed red through his clothes. He watched them visibly rearrange themselves into a circular pattern upon his chest. Blue and Red flames erupted forth from his body and wiped out the Shadows around him for a ten-yard radius, but left defenders unharmed. James’ body collapsed.
The vision ended, leaving James stunned. He checked his chest and saw that the pattern remained. It appears he had been Marked. He’d have to look into it further, but if what happened was what he thought had happened, things were going to change for him. Yes, indeed. Once more he tried to get up, he was going to push through the pain. He had to think about this on his feet.
