Talon marched up the stairs of the school towards the Hospital Wing, a cat carrier magically enchanted next to him and emitting a buzzing noise. He passed a few students on his way up, but otherwise his pilgrimage up to the eighth floor went relatively smooth. When he reached the Hospital Wing, he tried very hard to resist a smile.
It was his birthday today. His twenty-third. In some countries, twenty three was a powerful magic number. Sometimes it was considered good, sometimes it was considered bad. Being a wizard, Talon wished he had studied harder on his Arithmancy homework so he'd know what this all meant for his next year of life.
But the point was, he was here to see the nurse. Hopefully it wouldn't be too busy, as he certainly was not here for business. He was here to give her a present. Stepping in to the sanitary room and feeling a nice cool breeze hit him, Talon motioned with his wand for the cat carrier to fall at his side.

The Hospital Wing was utterly devoid of patients, perhaps for the first time since Rezna had started her term at Firefox. Taking advantage of the opportunity, the nurse had all the windows open, letting in both the fresh air and the warming sunlight. All the beds were crispy clean and not a speck of dust fluttered in the air. The room was peaceful, quiet, and empty when the Headmaster finally stepped inside. The sound of the carrier hitting the marble floor almost echoed throughout the chamber.
'Rezna?' Talon's called out but received no response. The silence stretched out over sixty slow seconds. Then, a barely audible shuffling and muted sounds of a female voice reached the Headmaster from across the room, from the direction of Rezna's personal quarters. Another minute went by before the door burst open to reveal a slightly flustered nurse and her dragon. Closing the door behind her the moment she was through, the blonde witch turned toward Talon, an apologetic smile on her face.
"What a surprise!" she called as she hurried across the room, leaving Oceana to guard the door behind her. Rezna must have been quite a site, even from a distance. Instead of wearing her traditional green healer's robes, the witch instead donned a multi-colored, polka-dot apron over a white sundress. The flour stains all over her clothing, arms, and cheeks only became noticeable as she came closer. That was also the case with the cat carrier.
"What's this?" Rezna asked curiously when she stopped in front of the large, sound-emitting box.971

Talon's smile broke through when Rezna walked in, though curiosity over her current uniform smothered his expression and replaced it with a look of innocent interest. She looked quite the charmer, white as a ghost and appearing as if she'd been in quite a doughy predicament. The Headmaster wondered whether he should laugh or question the situation seriously.
He was spared this decision by the nurse asking him about the cat carrier. His eyes glanced down to it, and when they returned to Rezna they were filled with mirth. "It's a present, for you," Talon said with glee, and waved his wand to have it rise up to arm level with him. His eyes trained on the door, he opened the box door with his left hand.
He reached inside and grabbed what looked like a ball of golden-brown fur from within. The moment it was safely in Talon's arms, the cat carrier's enchantment dropped and fell to the ground. "Since you had to give up Diamond to your family, I thought you might be lonely," Talon said, and extended the ball out to Rezna. Perched in the Headmaster's arms, the ball of fur was revealed to be what looked like a cross between a kitten and a full-grown lion. The tiny creature had a thick mane and a tufty tail, and its eyes were filled with the curious wonder of innocence.
"He's a kneazle," Talon said, "I hoped you'd like him."

"A present?" she asked with genuine surprise. Wasn't it customary for the person whose birthday it was to receive presents? Still curiosity about the contents of the carrier made Rezna keep her questioning mouth shut long enough to let Talon withdraw a ball of golden fur from the floating box. A soft gasp escaped the witch as she finally came to realize what kind of creature he was holding. The lion-like kitten gazed up at his new owner with a questioning gaze in his gold-speckled, violet-brown eyes. Rezna's heart melted instantly. After looking her over critically, the kneazle seemed to have approved as well, for he suddenly began to purr, his tufted tail swinging happily below him.
Reaching out with both arms, the nurse gently took her present from Talon, fighting hard to suppress the urge to grab the creature in her eagerness. "He's gorgeous," she whispered as the cat's yellow paws reached up to pat at a loose curl of blonde hair. This particular kitten seemed not to have inherited the rough disposition kneazles customarily displayed. Even for a lion, the kitten had quite a docile nature. Ruffling up his dark mane, it was evident from the starry-eyed look she was giving the pet that Rezna was smitten.
"Like him?! I love him! Thank you so much," she said as soon as she could tear her eyes off the cat that was playfully purring in her arms. "Between you, Oceana, and the knack all your students have for getting into trouble, I don't think I'd ever have gotten lonely. But I'm keeping him regardless!" Not that anyone now stood a chance of taking the yellow kitten away from her.
"Thank you!" she cried again, throwing her free arm about Talon's neck in an excited, grateful hug. The jolt made the animal meow once in disagreement, but settled for an apologetic pat from Rezna.
"As it were, I have a present for you too, my dear." The witch's bright, green eyes finally locked on Talon's blue ones with an earnestness that had nothing to do with the new kitten in her arms. Her voice soft and loving, she whispered, "Happy Birthday, Talon." 971

Talon's previously genuine smile turned watery as he watched the scene play out in front of him. The Headmaster felt a jolt in his heart of the like one only feels when they have done something good for someone they love. He had made her very happy as well, and this only maximized his emotion. It took all he had not to walk up and hug both witch and kitten.
It proved unnecessary, however, as the Nurse threw her arm around him gratefully. He returned the hug, wrapping robed arms around the witch and hearing a disgruntled sound from the poor kneazle who - while no doubt enjoying all the good will that was present around him - wasn't all that appreciative of being squashed between the two magicians.
"I'm glad you like him, love," Talon said, running his right hand up her back and through her flour-filled hair. The mention of his birthday, however, made the Headmaster rather surprised. How had she known? Ignoring the fact that it had been exactly two years since he had made a wish upon a genie to send her flying from her home in England to Spain without so much as a warning, it wasn't Rezna who had spent that span of time wishing and dreaming for Talon. How could she have remembered?
Suddenly, worry began to cut through Talon's heart. If she knew his birthday, then he clearly would be expected to remember her birthday, and he never even knew her birthday in the first place! It had never come up...and how old was she, for that matter? Instead of a 'thank you' or a 'what's my present' or any sort of addition to what she had said, Talon ended up following up awkwardly with -

It seemed to surprise Talon that she remembered. That was odd, considering there had been at least one celebration for his birthday in the past. And the birthday of a friend, let alone your Headmaster, is not something you usually forget. Now that Rez thought about it, just around this time last year she had been magically transported to Talon's office for an impromptu evening by the lake. It seemed hardly a coincidence now.
"Come on," the witch said with a smile as she started toward her office. Talon only seemed to stare after her with a strange expression on his face "- but when is your birthday?" she heard him ask.
Oh. Suddenly she understood his discomfort. "As I'm getting presents, might as well be today," Rezna said with a laugh, attempting to lighten the mood. For some, finding out your boyfriend did not know your birth date might be upsetting, but Rezna really didn't mind. He had never been around when she celebrated with her classmates, had he?
"It's October 19th. Twenty sure does feel old," she mused aloud, then added with a wink, "no offense."
"Now come on!" she repeated impatiently, heading back down the length of the room before Talon could stop her again. As she neared the end, however, the kneazle in her arms spotted Oceana guarding the door. He hissed angrily at the stone dragon who had gotten to her feet as her mistress drew nearer. The kitten could sense the strange sorcery that brought the Wavetorrent into being, and he did not approve. It went against nature, and that bothered him as much as any dark magic. In turn, Oceana only gazed passively at the other creature, having more than enough experience dealing with cats.
"Hey now! Calm down! She means no harm," Rezna attempted to placate the kneazle who was already halfway out of her arms. When he was once pounce away from Oceana, she let out one lazy roar and a shield appeared between herself and the cat, who went face-first into the invisible wall. Dazed, confused, the lion-cat pawed at the barrier, meowing at the dragon beyond.
"It looks like we need to set out on a peacekeeping mission before you get your present," Rezna mused aloud to Talon while watching her two pets critically. "I'd introduce them, but the kneazle needs a name first. Any suggestions?"
