It had been a year since the last birthday party of Headmaster Talon Windwaltz. Ashelle knew this year must be different. She was getting a bit too tempted to rub the lamp she'd gotten on her trip to Ubar. Muggles called it The Legendary Lost City of Arabia and it was located in the Rub al Khali Desert. The Wizards of Ubar however were very good at hiding their City . . . Ashelle had had to prove her worth with her own wand and one of theirs before she's been aloud to see it. One thing Ashelle'd had to admit . . . the Muggles stories certainly were accurate this time.
She'd bought many things from the market place vendors, not the least of which was this lamp, that the lady who sold it to her claimed still had a genie inside. Ashelle had scoffed then, but by now she was curious. Still, it was very rude to open a box one had already wrapped as a present. Besides her certificate to 'exchanged ideas with Ashelle' was also in the box.
At last she made it to the Ruby Phoenix. This time she was more than ready to greet it. "Hello again Phoenix! Won't you let me in? I have a present for Headmaster Talon''s Birthday." The Phoenix smiled and bowed it's way off the stone slab to let her by. Ashelle walked to the office door and knocked politely. "Headmaster Windwaltz?" she called inquiringly, "I have come to wish you a Happy Birthday."

One more year. Talon had hardly even realized, amongst all the work, and Scorpius, and all the new arrivals, that his birthday was approaching. So when he had heard of all the excitement surrounding the day, he was actually rather surprised. However, all did not sit well with the Headmaster - no matter who arrived, it didn't make up for who wouldn't. The wizard sat at his desk, sighing as one of his hawks screeched above.
A few of his students had sent owls to him, wishing him happy birthdays. None had come up to see him, however, until he heard the knock at his door. He leaned back, trying to compose himself from the previously depressed attitude that had covered him. "Yes?" He said softly, before raising his voice again, "Welcome Ashelle, come in."

Ashelle opened the door and walked in. She began to approach Talon's desk, but suddenly re-thought her actions and when back and closed the door. Nodding to herself she when back and placed the finely wrapped present on talons desk.
"I got this in the 'Lost' Wizarding City of Ubar Last year for your birthday, but because of extenuation circumstances you never arrived to receive it." Ashelle frowned as if worried about her next words. "I know it isn't traditional for me to tell you what it is but, it is a old oil lamp that the market lady claimed still had a genie inside. That and I make a Certificate for you to converse with me some time. The Certificate is because your one of my hero's. The lamp is because I figure your wishes might be less selfish than mine . . . if there is a Genie in it that is."
She smiled then and waited for the Headmaster to open the box. Somehow during the time it took to explain, she had felt more and more exited. What if there really Was a genie in the lamp? With Ubar anything was possible.

Talon mused to himself as Ashelle brought him his birthday gift. A genie from Ubar seemed rather unbelieveable, but it wasn't the Headmaster's place to deny the existence of the Djinn. Still...if there was a spirit imprisoned within the lamp, it might be the answer to his current problems. Talon quickly unwrapped the box, his eyes glancing up at Ashelle with wonder.
"Thank you, Miss Rainier," Talon said, "I'd give you points, but, that wouldn't be very proper, would it?" The Headmaster pulled the lid off the box and removed the lamp from within. "Well then," Talon continued, examining the dusty old oil lamp. It didn't look much, but the old bronze and fashion proved that it was ancient. As a solution, the artifact required the Djinn within. Otherwise...having such a historical item wasn't that bad of a consolation prize.
"Let's give it a shot." The Headmaster said, putting the lamp down before him on the table. He pulled his wand from his robe pocket and extended it forward, poking the lamp tentatively. He touched it again. "Spiritus Revelio!" He said, and the charm erupted from the point, covering the object with an aura. "Eh well...guess I have to do it the usual way." He put his wand down and took the lamp in his hands, and, tensing up, rubbed the lamp with his right hand.
Immediately, the room darkened. It was as if the sun itself was preparing for this particular entrance. The oil lamp shook, bounced, nearly knocking itself over as something deep within prepared to see the outside world once more. The room was filled with echoing screams and shouts, such as 'KEEP AWAY THE SOW IS MINE', and 'COME TO MAMA SLOTHY'. The lamp itself seemed to moan, and then, something squeezed itself out of the pouring end of the lamp.
It was a finger. It was quickly followed by a hand, an arm, as shoulder. Then, all the sound stopped, but the room remained dim. The lamp was lit up, as if there was a spotlight in the room somewhere. After a few seconds of patting the ground, the arm reached back, grabbed the handle of the lamp, and proceeded to pour the rest of the body out onto the table. A moment of surprised silence later, whatever it was, with a loud 'BANG!', rocketed up into the air, floating on nothing, his legs crossed.
Whoever it was had a large pot belly, a huge beard, a turban, and a rather large nose.
"I AM JAVED!" He cried, raising his arms for dramatic effect. He dropped his right arm and pointed toward Talon with it, eyeing him carefully.
"You..." He floated closer, his face mere inches away from Talon's. "YOU ARE THE ONE WHO SUMMONED ME! Search your feelings! You know it to be true!" He spun around in circles in air, before coming to a complete stop and smiling. "I haven't been this excited since King Yemma dropped by a long time ago!"
Looking down at Talon once more, he held up three fingers.

If Ashelle's jaw had been long enough it surly would be resting on the floor as of this moment. A Genie, a real Genie!
From this moment on Ashelle told herself, I will never doubt another Muggle fairy tale, until it is proved false! She didn't regret giving away such a valuable prize, because when one does something truly good or selfless one is rewarded three fold - eventually. What could be more helpful and selfless that to gave a magic lamp to someone? Could this mean some day nine of her own wishes would come true in some fashion? She giggled at such a thought. I'll just have to wait and see, she thought.
"Wow!" Ashelle exclaimed delighted. "What are you going to wish for, Headmaster?"
Post by Talon Windwaltz on Aug 15, 2007 20:43:54 GMT -5
Talon looked rather absurd. After the lights had gone out and the arm had emerged from the lamp, Talon had dropped the item in shock and watched as the fantastic events unfolded before him. Now, so close to him he could feel his breath, floating cross-legged like a picture out of a storybook, was a fat, bearded, mystic. Supposedly, by his declaration of several wishes, this was the Djinn of myth.
For this reason, perhaps, the Headmaster's ridiculous expression could be excused. His sapphire eyes were practically popping out of his head, his jaw was hanging stupidly, and his arm was crossed over his chest as if he were trying to suppress a blow. Talon had seen many strange things before, many dangerous and benevolent creatures, but the Djinn, even to wizards, was naught but a children's story. Apparently not.
"M-me!? I set you free?" Talon said stupidly, "But, but, th-this girl gave you to...I mean gave your...I mean..." He stumbled over his words, muttering various unrelated syllables before he finally gained control of himself and said, "Great Javed...you can...grant any wish? Any wish at all?" If this were the case...perhaps this was the answer to his Birthday Blues.
The combined excitement and confusion of the two humans around him only served to make him even more excited himself. "Yes! Any wish!" With that, he leaped up and started dancing on the ceiling. "Annnnnny wish you want..." 'BANG!', and Javed was now the table, decorated with extremely large eyes and a mouth. "You could even wish for all of their bases to belong to you!" 'BANG!' He was a barber now, brushing Ashelle's hair. "You could wish for a large turkey dinner!" 'Bang!' Small elephant, balanced pecariously on it's own head. "You could wish to become an hero!" With another 'BANG!', the elated creature poofed directly in front of Talon's face again, this time upside down. He said, in a much quieter voice, "Any, any, any wish... Except.."
"Three rules. There is NO bringing back the dead. There is NO way to make someone love you. And, perhaps most importantly, there is NO wishing for more wishes. Wish for any of these things, and I will be forced to bring the wrath of Balthazar upon you! And then, and then.. Grenth..." Twisting himself around so his face was facing Ashelle, his body still upside down, he started shouting once more. "AND YOU, GIRL! YOOOOOOOOU!" Another 'BANG!' later, Javed was on top of her head, face peering down to look straight into her face. "YOU REMIND ME OF A MAN!"
Post by Talon Windwaltz on Aug 15, 2007 21:17:24 GMT -5
"Any wish..." Talon responded, his surprise fading and disappearing into his own mind. Well bringing back from the dead wasn't exactly what he had wanted anyhow - those souls who had gone beyond were too far gone to be saved. Making someone love you would've been nice, but it was always better to save someone's free will for themself...and wishing for more wishes, well that was just greedy.
"I wish..." The Headmaster said, his voice growing more excited, mostly influenced by the crazy antics of the Djinn, "well you obviously don't know her, but then you might know anyone...I wish for...I wish for..." He didn't really know how to say this, and with Ashelle in the room too. Did anyone know of his true feelings for her? Anyone? Did even she know? Would this wish even work?
He sighed, his voice abandoning its excitement, "I wish Rezna Lardale were here for my birthday..."
Javed looked away from Ashelle, once more looking towards Talon before he pounced off of Ashelle and back into the air above the table. Bringing his arm up, he snapped his fingers in Talon's face. "Done!" He grinned, happy that he had gotten to grant a wish so soon. The last person he had granted wishes for had spouted three wishes off immediately, but they were always predictable. 'Give me money', 'Give me strength', 'Give me Earth and Water'. Oh wait; perhaps that third one wasn't all that common... Unless it was FOR SPARTA! Besides that, though, people would often decide to think for months, keeping the wishes for 'just in case' situations. A few times they died before he got to grant anything.
"BAH!" He said, slamming a hand to his face to clear the thoughts. "One wish down! Two wishes left! Make me brown! Victim of theft! GO DOWNTOWN! I AM BEREFT!" And with that and a 'BANG!', the Djinn seemed to be flushing himself into his own lamp, saluting Talon on the way as he slowly but surely was sucked back in, leaving only a small, giraffe shaped cloud which quickly simmered out of existance.

"Ow" said Ashelle rubbing her head where the Genie had stood on her. She was unsure weather to be mad at him for saying she looked like a man or not. Perhaps the man she reminded him of was particularly feminine looking. However she was soon distracted by the tone of voice Talon used to make his wish. Not that she had much experience in the matter, but Ashelle was no dunce ether. She'd bet 10 galleons that this Rezna Lardale person was the object of the Headmasters affection. Despite an overwhelming desire to meet this girl, Ashelle decided to let them be . . . after all grown ups got up to some odd things when they were together.
"Happy Birthday Headmaster Windwaltz," she said turning to make an exit. "Be sure to use my certificate next time your about to make a wish. I'd like to see Mr. Javed's magic again some time."

And as soon as the 'done' was uttered a woman a country away underwent the most peculiar experience of her life. One moment she was heading out the door of her parents' flat with every intention of grocery shopping, and the next she was standing in an empty hallway at once both strange and familiar. In bewildered silence she turned around in place as her eyes alighted on sites she had only just started forgetting. There was the painting of the milkmaid who once pointed her in the right direction to her common room and a floor below was the pole she rammed right into while running late for her Transfiguration lesson. But on that particular floor of the castle stood an object she would have had no difficulty bringing to mind. The Djinn, intentionally or not, had abducted her from her life in England and placed her directly before the ruby guardian of the Headmaster's office.
With a frown of confusion, Rezna Lardale gazed in silence at the ruby figure before her. She hadn't the slightest idea what she was doing back at school or how in the name of Merlin she had gotten there, but it didn't require the brains of a genius to realize where she was meant to go.
Rezna cleared her throat and took a halting step toward Talon's office. It had been months since she'd graduated; it had also been months since she spoke to any of the people still residing at Firefox. Her goodbyes had been brief and irregular. Some people she never said farewell to at all. If it had been her choice, things would have ended otherwise, but as it was she was forced to come home in a hurry. Unfortunately, one of the people she had never given a proper goodbye to was the man who lived behind the door she was now facing. Now whether that had anything to do with her sudden appearance at his doorstep, Rezna hadn't the slightest idea. Yet she knew that her knocking on his door now would make their meeting a slight bit more awkward than it was already bound to be. They had been friends while in a relationship of Headmaster and student. Now the latter relationship was finished, but was the former? There was one way to find out.
Reaching out she softly knocked on the wall by the ruby phoenix while softly stating, "I think I'm here to see Headmaster Windwaltz, and I'm not sure if he's expecting me."
Green eyes resting on the ruby statue, the woman waited in tense silence for the doors to open.

The Phoenix, if it had a life of its own, would've been surprised to see who stood before him. A graduate of some importance to the Headmaster, Rezna Lardale, had seemingly returned to see the mopey birthday boy. Knowing this would please its master greatly, the guardian bowed out of the way, revealing the wooden door which instantly pushed open. The Phoenix did have the power to open that door...it just usually chose not to except when Talon himself was opening it.
---
Was that it then? Talon watched the Djinn snap his fingers, say some words regarding the limitations now set on his contract with him, and vanish after proclaiming the first wish granted and terminated. Ashelle, shortly afterward, made her comments on Javed's craziness and left, asking him politely if he would call her back the next time he was going to summon the spirit. Before the Headmaster could really recover from the scenario, everything had seemingly returned to normal - the lights back on, the giraffe shaped cloud returning to amorphous form and vanishing, and Javed back in his lamp.
Well that was the myth come alive, that was for sure, and he had said the wish was granted. Therefore...did it take a while? Was Rezna perhaps being summoned on foot? But then his wish wouldn't completely come true...that could take days and days! Well, depending on where she was anyhow. Talon smashed his head face down in his papers, sighing loudly as he pointed his wand at the lamp on the floor and muttering dejectedly, "Accio Lamp." It flew to his other hand, and he returned both lamp and wand to the inside of his robe pocket.
His eyes closed and uncomfortably pushed against the miscellania on the Headmaster's desk, Talon didn't notice the door open again.

Giving a small smile of gratitude to the phoenix (though she wasn't even sure it could see it), Rezna stepped through the open doorway to Talon's office. Two footsteps later she surprised herself by realizing that she was unconsciously holding her breath. It wasn't like this was her first trip the Talon's office, and it was not like she was in trouble or faced with suspension. But no matter what she told herself she was as nervous as she had ever been in her life. Perhaps it was due to her strange manner of arrival or the personal fear of facing an offended old friend. At least that was the only explanation she could give herself, and at the moment she really needed to have an explanation for something. Otherwise bad things tended to happen to her when unexplained phenomenon was afoot. And being apparated by an external force into a building that had anti-Apparition and anti-Disapparation spells on it definitely qualified as unexplained phenomenon in her book.
Seconds later she stood facing the recognizable mess and the recognizable figure she usually associated with that particular room of the castle. The man always seemed to be in a state of exhaustion and it seemed he did not choose to make that day an exception. Silently Rezna stood gazing at the form of her old Headmaster, memories of fun and deadly experiences filling her mind. She hadn't realized until that moment just how much she missed her life at Firefox and those that had been a part of it. Even the sight of Talon's ever messy blonde hair made her eyes burn dangerously.
Smiling softly the girl fought the urge to run forward and hug him in eager greeting and at the same time to quietly walk away. It did not, after all, seem as though he expected any visitors, but Rez realized that she no longer had any control of her body. Even if she wanted to turn and leave she found herself rooted to the spot. It was almost as though a physical force was keeping her in the room. And knowing better than to fight with unexplained phenomenon, even the kind that extended to her mobility, the woman gladly noted that her choice was made for her and could not be considered simple selfishness on her part.
With that, she crossed the room in quick strides and placed herself directly on the other side of Talon's desk.
"I'm sorry to interrupt, Headmaster Windwaltz," she began in a soft voice, in case she should wake him, a grin playing at the corner of her lips, "but I'm under a firm impression that you wanted to see me. And if this surprises you, don't worry; you're not the only one." Her green eyes sparkling happily, she couldn't help but to add, "And if you're busy, I won't take long. It's just been too long and I've… well truth be told I've missed you Headmast-, Profes- … Sir."

So the whole thing had been a dream, how wonderful. Yeah, the birthday cards were getting numerous and his paperwork was getting even more, and he had simply fallen asleep out of boredom - probably drooling on important documents, too. He had dreamt of a Djinn and of Ashelle Rainier presenting him with the most fantastic of birthday presents - and he was still dreaming, apparently, because it was almost as if he could still hear Rezna's voice in his ear...
He looked up, his mood taking an even further turn for the worse. Well, that was, until he saw the woman standing before him, looking rather confused but excited to see him. His heart leapt in his chest, and had he been a weaker man than who he was, he probably would've fell out of his chair. Another man at this point had once said "Only Mildew Fatigues God With True Force" but the expression that Talon was thinking of was more along the lines of:
"Oceans Make Green, Oceans Make Green, Reflect Every Zebra Next April"
The Headmaster looked dumbstruck, and for the second time that day his jaw was hanging limply, his eyes popping out of his head. "You...you're..." He leaped from his seat, holding out his hands and grabbing Rezna's own in them, "You're actually here! You're...here...you're...oh." He pulled his hands back, his mouth returning to normal and his eyes focusing at Rezna's stomach instead of her face. Every so often he'd look back up at her, but then he'd look aside...only to have his gaze return once more.
"I'm...I'm sorry I was so...you see...I...uhh...really..." He couldn't help but smile, though it was a very unlikely thing for a usual Headmaster to do, "...really missed you...too...oh Rezna, where have you been? Why didn't you tell me?"
