You two, Professor Birchheel had said quickly in her accented tones. I want you to go to the tallest tower and watch the woods for any signs of the party, understand? Anything of note, you send an owl to me immediately.
The potions mistress had looked so ferocious, her yellow eyes so intense, that Ferris and Megan had not hesitated a single second in their task. Ferris had immediately seized little Megan's hand and legged it to the school without a word. There was just one problem with their mission. The tallest tower had long since been destroyed; during the war with the Society of Shadows it was said that Anil Hawkins, the bad tempered charms teacher, had brought the place to its foundations. So where were the pair of Gryffindors supposed to watch the forest from? Ferris thought quickly, his thready pulse racing as he looked first down one corridor then down another that led in the opposite direction. Where could they go?
The top floor was the obvious answer, but that was where the headmistress' office was located, and Ferris was sure that Professor Rigaldi would not appreciate being interrupted by them. Being the nervous boy he was, just the thought of being told off by the headmistress made Ferris' knees tremble. Then again, they had been given permission by a teacher, and Ferris knew that Megan, if she were not given a task, would be off into the forest after Sylph and the others. He could not have that, he could not stand to see a defenceless second year go into that place, probably never to come out again.
"Follow me," he told her, his watery blue eyes suddenly fixing upon Megan's green ones with an intensity never seen in the slight lad before, and with that he plunged up the stairs that led, one at a time, to the headmistress' office. Once there, and to his utter relief and delight, Ferris found the door unlocked and the room vacated. Pulling Megan after him the fifth year lad rushed to the window and peered out in the direction of Fenrir's wood. Nothing was visible yet, but there would be.
Soon.
