A young, red-haired woman silently walked up the center-most staircase of an isolated castle located somewhere in the Spanish mountains. This castle was over a millennia old, but, due to various circumstances, portions of it had been rebuilt and repaired over time. Most of these circumstances were battles, and the nineteen-year-old red-eyed witch couldn't actually think of a time when they weren't rebuilt because of one fierce fight or another.
She sighed, exhaling quietly as warm air rushed out from between her thick lips. She paused a moment on the steps--What was this, the sixth flight?--and carefully flexed her right shoulder. An explosion of pain rippled through it, cascading down her back and arm. The Monolayre winced.
She straightened her robe and continued walking the next couple of flights at a steady pace.
Teagan Monolayre had a job. It was highly skilled, high-paying, and dangerous. It suited her tastes and style quite a well. In fact, it even incorporated her many talents--potions, transfiguration, charms, dueling, and even flat-out brawling.
Unfortunately, its casualty toll was a tad high. Three nights ago, some asshole broke in and nearly even made it through Level Two, the enchanted maze. It wasn't unusual to reach that compound in Coslada--due to the unfortunate tendency for Secret-Keepers to be murdered, the security regarding the location of the mysterious object under guard wasn't the best. The first level consisted of a room with a concrete floor and occasional pipes overhead. It led to the maze entrance. Various duelist specialists attacked uninvited guests in this area.
How did this person manage to get through the Level One security with all of its defenders?
Easy. The crazy nut brought in a few scorpions and swiftly used some adept engorgio charms on them. As in, quite simply, this person threw some truck-sized highly venomous angry creatures with huge pincers at a gathering of wizards. In their defense, the entrance to the building was only human-sized, not truck-sized. The people nearest the arachnids were fairly screwed. The snipers backed them up immediately (or so she'd heard), but the intruder managed to deflect the few attacks that reached him or her.
While that distraction was wreaking havoc, the intruder fled to the maze and entered it with the correct password. This person moved without detours, nearly even reaching its center.
Anna (Teagan's alias) stopped that person. One might argue that she cheated, but a job was a job. Invisible and silent, she'd waited behind a corner, knocked away his/her/its offending hand, and roundhouse kicked the asshole to the head in one swift motion. It was an instant knockout. Then, she dragged that person to one of the many one-way portals to a prison and sent the unconscious intruder along.
It was fun. She fulfilled her duty and got to bash some brains. Unfortunately, some poison or venom or something had managed to scratch her in the scuffle, and it hurt like hell even if it was treated too early for serious damage.
The majority of employees working that night had gone on "vacation." She hadn't gotten word of the injuries acquired by her coworkers, but it was obvious someone was a snitch. While internal investigations sneaked around, everyone involved would have to sit tight, behave, and heal up. Even "Anna" was going to take a while to heal to 100%. She could heal from bruises, cuts, and broken bones quickly enough--poisons, on the other hand, were a completely different matter. She suspected she'd have a nasty black scar there once it stopped throbbing like a goddamn sledgehammer.
Anyway, three nights were all she could handle before her recent project drove her insane--Teagan was sure she'd lose her mind if she stared at that goddamn chain for one more minute.
And so, here she was.
The 5'6" ex-head girl exhaled slowly at the top of the landing and smiled politely to the statue.
"Good evening."
Perhaps dedicating her extra time to the school might distract her for awhile.
