OOC: If you didn't post in the last class, then you can just wing it and post here saying that your character missed or whatever.
IC:
The Monolayre entered the classroom fifteen minutes before class and sighed. It was one week since their last meeting and, therefore, quiz time.
She knew how students behaved, but attendance today was crucial. She even warned them about the quiz beforehand.
Class was scheduled for 5 PM. With a flick of her wand, candles burned quietly along the walls and a dusty chandelier (she swore she cleaned it already) lit with a vibrant fury. She slashed the whippy wand at the windows, and they immediately flapped open, allowing in the last rays of sunlight.
With a few more strokes of her wand, the room was as clean as could be, considering how dim and unused it was to begin with. Her shoulder throbbed, causing a scowl to form from her plump lips, and she paused to rub it for a moment.
She withdrew the type-written quiz pages from her bag and calmly placed the stack on her desk.
Now, all she needed were students. Excellent.
OOC: Students receive a quiz when they enter the room. The quizzes look like this:
[picture of rune--there are twenty-four of these, and blank does not count; you can get them from the textbook] Name of Rune: Translation/Meaning:

Amira's usual school robes swayed gently as she littered the hall with her presence. Her hair was pulled back in a low pony-tail. Small bags gathered below her eyes from studying all night. She was well aware that class didn't start until five in the afternoon, but she got lost on time while studying. She managed to get some sleep, but with Kelala wanting to play, sleep seemed nearly impossible.
The twenty-four different runes collected themselves in her head. She was ready for the quiz and she was sure she'd get an awesome grade.
Arriving only minutes before class started, she received her quiz and went and sat in the seat she had in the first class. With her quill at the ready she wrote her name at the top of her paper.

The Hufflepuff completed the assignment and looked it over while waiting for the ink to dry. She didn't miss anything, did she? No.
Amira rose from her seat and walked up to the red headed professor, then calmly walked back to her seat. Her pale blue eyes stared out the window at the last rays of sunlight. It was quite a site to behold.
(ooc: What the heck happened to the pictures? You know what runes I'm talking about.)

Post by Melisande De La Rosa on May 22, 2011 13:54:04 GMT -5
Melisande De La Rosa was a girl who, it must be said, was not one to arrive at a class late. Nor was she the type to, despite having only just arrived at school, ask the teacher for leniency regarding tests over the material she hadn't known to study. It was helpful, there fore, that Melisande enjoyed books and reading, and had, in fact, read much on several subject that were taught in the institution that she now had the privilege of attending.
So, when the young Miss De La Rosa arrived in class, she received the quiz that was being administered that day, retreated to an open desk, and commenced answering questions immediately. At length, she judged her answers sufficient, and turned in the following assignment:
Melisande De La Rosa Ravenclaw-2nd year Ancient Runes
Elder Futhark
There are many versions of the runic alphabets. Each has variations in names, shapes, esoteric meanings and magical uses. One should not mix futharks, or the intent or meaning becomes confused. The Elder Futhark, the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, and the Younger--or Scandinavian--Futhark are the most frequently seen versions of the runic alphabets in use today.
The runes are broken into three sections or groups of eight, called aett (aettir, plural). This helps one to remember their order, and has significance in magical uses.
Rune users disagree on whether or not to place a different meaning on a rune that falls in an inverted or reversed position. Some runes look the same upside down and right side up. These cannot be "reversed". Nevertheless, any of the runes may appear as a "merkstave" (which literally means "dark stick" and implies a "dark" meaning), depending on how the runes are cast. Note that a "reversed" or "merkstave" meaning is not the opposite of its primary meaning, but usually has a more negative connotation.

He'd almost made it to the first Runes class. Almost. Had he not been hellbent on making a grand entrance by apparating onto Professor Monolayre's desk, he would have made it. But no, he just had to get splinched (AGAIN) and lose a chunk of his right ear just outside the door. He just had to bleed so much it made him dizzy as he made his way to the Hospital Wing. The nurse just had to hold him captive for so long that he missed the whole class. He was still laughing about getting splinched, but missing one of his favorite classes was not a laughing matter.
Thus, when the second class rolled around, he played it safe and didn't try to apparate. It had never gone well, so why would it this time? He couldn't help thinking, though, as he made his way to the classroom, that maybe this time...
He was the second student to arrive, but the first guy and the first Gryffindor. That counted for something, so he would crack a wide grin as his parrot flew from his shoulder and perched on a light fixture on the wall. Meanwhile, Caiden received his quiz and settled down in an empty seat. After scanning the quiz over, he set it down and began to write.

Now halfway through his quiz, Caiden paused to look over his first twelve answers and flex his hand a bit. He must have been a bit tense, given how sore it was. Perhaps a bit of anxiety because he had missed the previous class? Perhaps, but it wasn't really warranted: he often read the Runes textbook just for fun. He thoroughly enjoyed the subject. Thus, something like this was no trouble. Still, better not to strain his hand when his other one wrote just as well. For the second half of the quiz, Caiden switched his quill from his left hand to his right, continuing to flex the fingers on his left as he wrote. _____

Once he was done, he looked over his answers a couple more times, a smile breaking the formerly intense expression. He was very confident in his answers. However, he felt like he should add something else. An apology for missing the previous class. He nodded to himself and added a little note at the bottom of the quiz. _____
I'm sorry about missing the last class, Professor Monolayre. Splinched myself practicing apparation, got a nice bit taken out of my right ear. Would have loved to be here but I imagine the blood would have been a distraction. Promise it won't happen again. _____
Another pause. Was that all he wanted to add?...Naaah. Chuckling quietly, he added one more thing at the end of his note. _____
8^) _____
There, perfect. Now it had his own personal touch of humor. Caiden got up and handed the quiz to Professor Monolayre, giving her a warm smile and a nod before sitting back down.
