Onyx nudged the ground at the bottom of the archway steps with her toe. She idly noted that her favorite red Chuck Taylors were beginning to sport holes. The tall, slim Ravenclaw dropped her duffel-bag and raised a hand to smooth her red-streaked black hair, currently up in its signature high pigtails. She brushed her hand on her grey skinny jeans before picking up her bag again and looking back at her sister.
Ivory was trotting up the drive, weighed down by a rolling suitcase, duffel-bag, and large purse. Her new pink sunglasses bounced in time with her perky blonde ponytail. Her new "I <3 NY" shirt was knotted in the back to accentuate her waist.
"Ooooo, good old FFU," cooed Ivory. "But it's no New York City." She sighed. "I'm so glad Mother took us on this trip. It's been an amazing month, don't you think Onyx?" She continued without waiting for an answer. "Oh, I'll miss Times Square, and the Broadway shows, oh and the shopping! Well, back to the grind I guess," she chirped, making her way up the worn stone steps toward the entrance to the ancient castle.
Onyx hung for an extra second at the bottom of the stairs, staring up at the stone face of the university. It had been some month. The twins' mother had finally taken them on the long-promised trip to America. Centered in New York City, the trio had explored portions of the east coast, including the historic and scenic highlights. It was a good trip. But Onyx had never felt so much like she was ready to end a vacation. The glare of the sun off the Chrysler Building reminded her of the sheen of the lake on a winter afternoon, and the press of people surging through Fifth Avenue just made her yearn for the dim, stone halls of Firefox. Yes - it was very good to be back.
"Onyx!" Ivory's chiming voice pulled her from her reverie. "Coming?"
"Yeah, I'm -- actually no, go on ahead. I'll be up in a little bit."
Ivory shrugged and went inside as Onyx dropped her bag on the steps and sat down beside it. The hugeness of the castle was a familiar comfort as she stared out at the grounds. They were just the same as ever, but yet held that strangeness inherent after a long separation. But the strange was normalizing...
