As you probably know, categories are the more vast areas, covering large regions. Like and entire major city or section of a continent. Ignoring out of character ones, we should almost certainly have less than half a dozen ones to start out. Boards are more specific locations, usually major geographical features or tourist-ish attractions. Things like lakes or libraries would be great for boards. Sub-boards are places that are similar to boards, but considerably smaller and contained entirely within another geographical feature. The librarian's office as a sub-board to the library or the mermaid's cave as a sub-board to the lake might be some examples.
Look over FFU for inspiration if you need it, but keep in mind at least some of the stuff we mentioned in the lore thread. Also, I drew a shitty paint map. If anyone else also wants to do the same, go for it and we'll work out some major stuff.

Morgan! That secret tiny island of evil is called 'Tasmania.' The Devil lives there.
I actually really love that format. I see no reason to change it. I would argue, just for old times' sake, that we put a sub-board in 'Regular Earth' for OOC conversation, even if there's technically an OOC section. We do, after all, live in Regular Earth. But at the same time, if people want to actually roleplay in Regular Earth, then nevermind because the way we track RP points might get messed up by that.
I especially enjoy the idea of Vampires living in the Mountains and Lycans living in the Forest.

I think someone asked if we wanted to stick with ProBoards before. I think it was Pman. I have not worked much with other forums lately. Would anyone recommend switching to something else, or do we want to just stick with what we know?
I do like ze proboards, especially since it is now so super versatile! The main problem was that versatility means nothing if you don't have someone able to take advantage of it. We got Sparky back, so we do.
As far as the boards, I am hesitant to make FFU and Arcadia completely different categories, since I kinda envisioned them as being strongly integrated into one another. If you guys wanna have them both as two different categories, that's cool, though here's what I kinda had in mind:
1) Arcadia City a) FFU (w are the mightiest school of all!) -8 sub-boards for schools of magic (boring-ass classes for life) -Arcane Council (SRS BSNS) b) Grand Library (kinda thought having two libraries would be a little redundant) c) Housing district (didn't know if we wanted to segregate ourselves out by great house in sub-boards) d) Market/Merchant District (rather than making random taverns, let people build their own!) e) City Square (might be a nice little park or something too, I dunno) f) Undercity (tunnels and shit) -Dungeons (Azrael is totes locked up down here) g) City Walls (for all the kids to stand on top of and gaze off dramatically into the distance) h) Cemetery (where you totes gettin' laid) i) Lake (blub blub) j) Dueling grounds/Coliseum (we will definitely have duels)
2) Avalon a) Plains/Farmland (non-magic scrubs gotta eat and gotta work) b) Ze river (follow it to ze falls- right off the world) c) Crazy forest/Wolfwood (to grandma's house) -Heart of the forest (the werewolf place) d) Mountain peaks (breathe that fresh air!) -Vampire castle? Maybe caves (100% uptime on darkness in the caves) e) Drakborough Port (dirtier than Arcadia, has awesome magic airships to take serious expeditions to and from Faerie) -Sketchy back alleys (everyone loves to shank everyone else now and again) f) End of the world/Broken lands (floating chunks of shit at the edge of Avalon where physics tell you to fuck off) g) Island of Shadows (oooooh spooky) -Diadem Fortress (gotta have some place for the wannabe evil overlords to come brood)
3) Faerie a) Enchanted Forest/Faelight Forest/Foresty forest (for shitters to come get dead) b) Magic Horizons Ruins (sometimes wizards fall victim to hubris and try to build something they cannot hold)
Kinda wanted to have a decent number of boards and cover a bunch of different "terrain" types to post in, while trying not to be too redundant. Also liked the idea that I did above with whatever map we end up with having some blank spots with big question marks for us to fill in later as plot decrees. After all, us wizards have been very busy holding on to what we have, ain't no one got time to go explore everything when we're busy trying to not die.
I vote for Tim's layout, and add on that I would like to see a board wherein one can RP in modern, normal earth, simply for the options. I do not, however have any ideas for using it, so I will not be broken up in the least about its possible exclusion. (Basically, "It would be neat to have it, but it is even more unnecessary than the rest of the site, so do as you will." A weak opinion on the subject, just in case everyone else has no opinion on the matter. Any strong opinions will overrule this one.)

I was also thinking of Arcadia being the new FFU. FFU is a bit of an odd title, but I know how attached we are to it. Arcadia can be the name of the school and the surrounding area, kind of treating it like an expansive school campus. The main school building could just be referred to as the castle or whatever.
I do not believe there should be a sub-board for each type of class. Classrooms were never heavily used to begin with, so I think it will be fine to have one board generally labeled for classrooms. We could describe their locations in a locked map on that board.
When it comes down to the final titles for areas, we could consider using the names of our grandfathered characters, such as with the mountains or woodlands.
I think opening up a normal Earth board is a good thought, but it would just open a can of worms. We want the characters to end up in this magical world. I think anything else could probably just happen through flashbacks and flashforwards.
I'm not sure this is the most correct thread to ask this in, but how is the school floating? That set-up will influence the layout at least a little. Is there an ancient tree holding the land altogether, which is how there is enough magic to keep everything afloat? Are they in a giant snow globe like Amira suggested? Did the humans make the land float, or did they just see it, claim it, and hop on?
Post by Talon Windwaltz on Jun 23, 2016 19:49:34 GMT -5
Teags - honestly, I'd rather we just keep FFU. I'm not particularly attached to the name 'Arcadia' anyway, and it's also a real university in my hometown. Tim liked the name for the city and there's really nothing wrong with it, so there it is. FFU, on the other hand, is the name of this site. The whole point is an 'FFU revival.' Changing up the area, magic, etc. so it's a bit more mature and structured is fine, but FFU is FFU. We're trying to bring it back, not just make an entirely new thing. (I'm trying to keep things in the spirit of FFU as much as possible.)
Also, the island is floating because of magic. If a wizard didn't do it, a Fae did. I'm totally fine with it just naturally being the way it is, and they claimed it, hopped on, and put a bunch of Level 10 Abjuration spells on it to keep Fae out. I'm also fine with the idea that Ancient Wizards used powerful Evocation magic to make it fly.
I agree that 'normal Earth' should really be a metaphor for our world. It's assumed that everything in normal Earth is just what's happening in the real world, and you 'step through the threshold' into the site, the magical world. So better to just not have a Normal Earth board.
I like the idea of more 'tribute' names for the Forest and Mountains. I'm not suggesting any though, because I'm all suggested out. Somebody honor somebody, and I'll go 'sure.'
Tim - the Ruins of Magic Horizons is totally legit. I love Magic Horizons as the name of the hubris castle.
ALSO, I like that Arcadia/The Castle are integrated, as it becomes more like a College Town.

That's fine. It was only a suggestion. I'm just throwing out ideas, so I'm expecting 90% of them to be turned down anyway. I think it would be nice to have a reason behind the name, though. Perhaps the first humans found the place after chasing a fiery fae fox? Then, they could have just decided to name the university out of respect for that legend later on.
I vote for "everyone just saw this floating thing and hopped aboard" since that would explain why lycans and vampires are up there with them. After all, they're not exactly good to have around. It also gives us the convenient explanation of "it floats, but no one knows how" and "the waterfall over the edge of the continent has led to much speculation of where that water comes from, but no one knows how that works." It makes an easy out, so we have less to explain and our jobs are easier. Characters could try to figure it out IC, too.
Hm... i) Lottie Lake? b) Ze river (follow it to ze falls- right off the world)--The Twisting River and the Endless Falls? Volkov River? Copperfield Falls? This one is a bit tricky. c) Crazy forest/Wolfwood (to grandma's house)--Asphodel Woods? It's such a pretty name. -Heart of the forest (the werewolf place)--Aliagh Clearing? Sealla/Cealla Den? I think Aliagh flows more nicely. d) Mountain peaks (breathe that fresh air!)--Ravenwood Peaks? -Vampire castle? Maybe caves (100% uptime on darkness in the caves)--Bagley-Aldaine Manor? Azzurro Castle? Ellessa Caves? Gillespie Citadel? Too many cool vampire names.

...And I totally forgot that Firefox itself is named after Agiel Firefox. That, my dears, is one sign you've been away for too long. In that case, we could just say that Agiel Firefox is the person who convinced the five houses to come together and form the school, so it was named after him in his honor.
-like the idea of not having a ton of classroom subboards. Maybe just one 'the classrooms' and professors can post their assignments there or notices redirecting to where their assignments are if they do them out in the world.
-love Asphodel woods -love Ravenwood peaks -leaning towards Twisted River -love the idea of a subboards on river called 'Endless falls' -favor Heart of the Forest over some human given name. The werewolves don't need to name their dirt, they just need their territory respected. -no strong opinion on other names for boards

Thoughts -
--Romulus is coming back, so I'd rather not name the Castle after him. My vote is for Bagley-Aldaine Manor, unless Mildred is coming back, in which case...eh. "Castle Nosferatu" would also work, since the Nosferatu aren't actually coming back, and is just a general term for Vampire.
EDIT: I'm like, 100% down for Vampire Caves if everybody else is cool with that. I mean, they do live in the Mountains. And Vampires used to live in Caves on MH before we gave them a Dark Castle.
--I love Asphodel Woods, and Ravenwood Peaks, and I'm down for Twisted River and Endless Falls. How about the Shining Lake, since that's what we have here?
--I like Heart of the Forest. Sounds very Lycan-y.
-- I swear I explained the lore idea I had somewhere else, but here we go one more time to clarify (Tim has tasked me with writing out a detailed history, so this is more or less what I'm going for.)
--Fae have always taken humans to Faerie to transform them into abominations. Sometimes the abominations get back out, leading to horrifying twisted stories of monsters attacking people in mythology. Whether mythology creates Faerie in of itself, or Faerie creates mythology, is one of the major themes I'd like to work on.
--Sometime in the relatively recent past (like, sometime in the Middle Ages,) wizards (no more than alchemists, mystics, etc.) fled the world to Faerie (which they've always known about, but called it by different names) in order to escape persecution. At first, the Fae ignored them, and humanity experimented with Faerie magic and went beyond basic alchemy and were able to create true miracles. Once humanity was strong enough to warrant the attention of the Fae, the Fae attacked the invaders and tried to kill them/drive them out. Originally I had the wizards create the island with powerful Evocation magic, and then secure it with powerful Abjuration magic, but let's just say the island was already there and they used it because it was defensible. They used powerful Abjuration magic to keep the Fae from entering the island.
--So the Fae sent their abominations to attack, instead, because they were human in origin and could get through the shield. The mindless, ravenous monsters attacked the wizards, and the wizards, led by the Great Thaumaturge Agiel Firefox (which probably wasn't his "Christian" name, but a 'shadow name' of sorts,) fought back against them and drove them away time and again. During the downtime, Agiel chose to oversee the construction of a castle (in the style of his native England) and used it as a last line of defense in their (then small) city of Arcadia. (Time is fluid in Faerie, but I'm imagining this occurring around the end of the Middle Ages.) He fought the Vampires, and ultimately sacrificed his life to power a ridiculously strong Evocation spell that destroyed all of the Vampire Lords and Lycan Alphas and left the slaves, servants, hounds, and werewolves to flee into the mountains and forests.
--The wizards named the Castle "Castle Firefox" after the Great Thaumaturge who ended the war. At first, following the war, the Castle and City were ruled by an Archmaster. Archmaster Windwaltz was the heir of Firefox, and he was followed by Archmaster Halifirien, who was followed by Archmaster Cobalt, who was followed by Archmaster Muryllis, who was followed by Archmaster Marina.
--After each Archmaster was succeeded, the descendants and followers of the former Archmaster's teachings formed 'Houses' that attempted to exert pressure on the Archmaster, who responded with their own teachings and gathered their own followers. By the time of Archmaster Marina, there were Four Great Houses of Wizards, all vying for influence and attention, and Archmaster Marina (in her wisdom) ultimately decided it would be better if she were the last Archmaster, and that henceforth, the Four Great Houses would rule Arcadia directly, as it was no longer reasonable for one Wizard to have total control over a city. Naturally, Marina's wisdom and cleverness led to her gaining her own following, which ultimately became House Marina.
--You MAY have noticed that I only listed the one names, instead of the full name, for each. I did this on purpose. Archmaster Windwaltz doesn't necessarily have to be Archmaster TALON Windwaltz - Talon could be a descendant of his, if I wanted to play him again. Archmaster Cobalt doesn't have to be Sparky - Sparky could be his fuck-up descendant. This allows us to bring our characters back, instead of giving them up to be 'remembered.'
--The Abominations that are on the island are not native to the island. They are the descendants (or, in the case of the vampires, literally are) of the original abominations that attacked during the Faerie War at the beginning. They have been up here, on the island, and they don't go back because they know what will happen if they do.
--
--Lastly, I imagine that the water gets to the river/waterfall the same way water gets anywhere. It rains. We aren't necessarily above the clouds, just up in the sky.
EDIT on the point of rain and clouds: Faerie is a land of magic and myth. Presumably there IS no 'outer space' in Faerie and there is no need for atmospheric laws. So it could be that rain simply comes from "The Firmament."
