Channah Chumbleton, owner of a rather hoity toity fancy name, was not one for particularly fancy things. In fact, Channah liked things that were normal. Whether it had to do with her upbringing or not, Channah delighted in the lives of people. From the musical talents of her friend Chika Chisama, to the Quidditch Pitch skills of her new friend Amy Frost, Channah found pretty much everything wondrous. Everything just had so much story behind it, everything had a reason and a cause and it just all fascinated her to no end.
This was why Channah spent so much her time in the Gryffindor common room. There was just so many different lives converging in one place, so many stories that passed each other, interacted, affected each other. It never really occured to her that she, too, could be a part of all of the story-shifting. She was just so happy observing everyone and their happy little lives.
Channah's natural dirty blonde hair fell about her shoulders as she sat in a very plush recliner by the fire. Her chair was situated such that rather than facing the fire, like any normal person's, it was facing the other chairs that were facing the fire. All the better to watch them! She smiled as she sat, jeans and a t-shirt with her robe discarded on the arm rest. What stories would she see today?

Man, homework was so completely lame. Not that Nadia actually understood what was going on in any of her classes. It was like wizards had their own secret language or something. And God, was it hard to pick up.
Nadia was so done trying to figure this out. At least, for the moment. Right now, she just needed to relax. Maybe Finny or Cyan was free to hang out. Or maybe she was too lazy to bug them. Besides, they probably weren't having trouble understand stuff, and she didn't want to always be bothering them.
Coming into the common room from her dorm, Nadia was text-book fee, although she did have a rather large plastic shopping bag full of candy from her last care package from Mom. She flopped herself carelessly in an armchair, a leg slung over one side so that she was almost sitting sideways.
She balanced the bag on her mid-section before digging in. Then she noticed a girl by the fire. Ugh. Wizards were so weird. Who kept a fireplace lit in the summer anyway? "Hey. You want some?" She offered the blonde girl a piece of candy, probably 100% sugar, but eh, it wasn't like Nadia was a nutritionist. Besides, they were kids, they should be able to do stuff like gorge themselves on candy every once in a while, or else what was the point?
Channah didn't have long to wait. She waited patiently and bam! Someone was already coming along, and she was excited. It was a girl, one she had seen come and go before but had never actually interacted with. She flung herself into an armchair, apparantly with no care who was watching her. Channah was okay with that. Aside from the occasional weird looks, she got left alone most of the time. She was harmless, after all, and always gracious, so in general she was a positive entity to have around, one that most people didn't seem to think about that often.
To her surprise, Nadia offered her something. Candy! Candy was nice. Channah liked sweets, just like any other young woman (and man!) should, so she leaned forward and took it delicately from her fingers, smiling.
"Oh, thank you very much!" She said, genuinely pleased. She took the opportunity, as she accepted the treat, to give Nadia a proper (but brief and subtle, of course) up and down. She was definitely not unattractive, and glasses were definitely a plus. Channah hadn't had a chance to really take in her appearance, before, but she would remember her from now on, of that she was fairly certain. She popped the piece of candy into her mouth, smiling as the sweetness hit her tongue. She rolled the muscle around the sugary treat before pushing it to the side for a moment.
"I don't think that we have properly met before. I'm Channah!" She offered a hand for some sort of cross-couch handshake.
Post by Nadia Fairchild on Jun 24, 2012 19:40:26 GMT -5
Nadia took the offered handshake, as awkward as it was. Channah seemed pleasant enough. "I'm Nadia," she said, taking her hand back. She popped her own piece of candy in her mouth, enjoying it fot a moment before speaking again. "Mom always sends way too much junk food in her care packages. She's so weird. Other moms are all like stressing about making sure their kids are eating right, and mine is like, 'here, have a sackful of diabetes.' But she's always been like that. More like an older sister or something than like other people's moms. Maybe it's cause it's always just been me and her."
Wow. Talk about a lot of useless information dumping. Nadia had always been prone to babbling, but Channah made her feel even more relaxed than usual. "I mean, I have a real older sister, but I don't know her too well. She's like twelve years older than I am and we've never been very close." Jasmine was a mystery to Nadia. Over the years, Nadia had often tried to get to know her older sister, but Jasmine was so shy and secretive, that Nadia had just stopped trying years ago.
Happily, Channah finished the handshake and brought her hand back to her own armchair. She listened as Nadia told her some of her story. Good, good. Channah loved this stuff! People were just so... So interesting. She nodded and smiled as Nadia told her about her friendly mother. It sounded fun, having a mom like that. Her own mom was just that, a mother. And sisters? That sounded fun, too, even if they were too old to really play with.
Then it was her turn. She was never really good at this part, but she would try. That was the only real way to continue a conversation, and she wanted to hear more.
"W-well..." She started, awkwardly. "I'm an only child, but I've never really... I don't know. My mother sends me letters sometimes, but even back home we didn't really talk much except for, I don't know. Mother-Daughter things." Whatever that meant. She scratched at the back of her head, an apologetic look on her face. "That was really good candy, though." She'd finished it without even noticing. "Your mom sounds nice." She smiled (graciously). "I wish I got treats in the mail."

Mom was pretty nice. She never forgot about Nadia, and sent her letters every week, and a care package once a month. Of course, Mom was kind of weird too. She was always trying to use 'hip' language, so her letters were kind of embarrassing, and she dressed like she was Nadia's age. Not slutty or anything, just really young.
It kind of made sense, though. Jasmine had been born when Mom and Dad were still teenagers. Nadia had been born twelve years after that, when Mom was trying to convince Dad not to leave. Maybe she still felt like the same girl who'd gotten pregnant. Or maybe she felt like she missed out on the end of her childhood. Whatever the reason, Mom had always been that way for as long as Nadia could remember.
"Here, have some more if you want," said Nadia to Channah, placing the plastic grocery bag in between the two chairs. "Mom always sends way too much. It's nice to have someone to share it with." She could have brought some to Cyan and Finny, she guessed, but she didn't know if Cyan ate candy, and she did not want to see Finny with sugar in his system. That boy was already hyper enough.
"Sometimes I wish me and my mom could do mother-daughter stuff. She's worried about looking old, I guess." It was bad enough that her dad was always travelling and so rarely around for Father-Daughter events, but even when her muggle elementary school had hosted a mother-daughter picnic, Mom wouldn't take her. She was worried about what the other mothers would think of her.
Channah couldn't just say no to Nadia offering her delicious candy, especially for free. This stuff was precious, loaded with the sentiments of home. Each lick she lay upon the candy (discreetly, in her mouth, of course) was like a taste of Nadia's childhood, of her stories, of the trials and tribulations that must have brought the girl here, to this moment, to sharing candy with a sort-of stranger. It was nice, and it warmed her heart.
Channah didn't often get candy, and it was never from her mom. Her mother had always warned her about the health of her teeth, of the dangers of tooth decay that even wizards, with all their magic, sometimes could not avoid. Really, she'd thought that being, you know, magical, they could just magic away the bacteria, but her mother had insisted that she get it taken care of by a 'proper muggle doctor', and she had probably asked the dentist to make it as painful as possible or something. It was awful, and she didn't want to repeat it, but the sweetness of Nadia's story was addicting. As she accepted some more, she smiled happily as she tasted it, listening carefully to what Nadia said.
"Aww," Channah said, starting off her sentence... well, probably as lame as possible. Aww? Really? Dang it all to heck. "That's too bad." Thoughtfully, she tongued the candy quietly in her mouth. "I guess I can understand the worry, though. I mean, I worry about acting too young." Probably another fault of her mother's, but this wasn't her story. "Maybe if you visit back home for the holidays you could do something together! That would be fun, right?"
Right?
Channah was already talking more than usual. She didn't often like to invade on other people's stories, but maybe it was the sugar or something, or maybe it was the fact that she was slowly, reluctantly, awkwardly developing character in her stream of consciousness. What the hell.

Nadia thought about what Channah said as she popped another piece of candy in her mouth. She wasn't left to think long, since Channah had another question. This girl was like a little reporter or something. Maybe she was just curious, or maybe she was just bored. Either way, it was kind of nice for Nadia to have someone sh could just talk to without too much drama. This Channah girl should grow up and be like a shrink or something. She'd be good at it.
"I grew up in California. Not that you could tell by looking at me." Nadia didn't exactly look like your typical 'California girl' "I don't tan, and I'm not blonde, which is what most people expect from California girls. Which is kind of dumb on their part. Like, I'm just supposed to be this super-thin shallow girl who says 'hi' like it has six syllables. But, yeah, that's totes an offensive stereotype." It was like people thought women were supposed to fall somewhere on this continuum between hot and smart or something.
"Don't get me wrong, I know tons of girls like that. I'm just not one of them." The ones from her muggle elementary school counted, and there were even some like that at her last magic school. Not to mention the sheer number of them that lived on her street back home. "California's home, though. I guess that counts for something."
Channah knew the stereotype. California girls. They're unforgettable. Daisy dukes, bikinis on top, sunkissed skin... So hot, they'll melt your popsicle. They were undeniable, fine, fresh, fierce, as a matter of fact, they had it on lock. It was a well-known fact, and Channah nodded her head, indicating she understood.
"From what I understand, it's very warm and nice there, though! I'd like to visit someday," She said wistfully. "I come from Warkworth, in Northumberland. It's so cold there compared." Channah stretched a little, relaxing on her arm chair. "The weather here compared is like paradise, so I can only imagine California." She couldn't really think of any stereotypes that girls from Warkworth fit into besides the general 'english girl' stereotypes, so she didn't make any mention of them.
She held up a lock of her own dirty blonde hair. "I don't think I would mind my hair being lighter, really..."

"California is pretty nice," said Nadia, letting herself think about home for a while. She liked Spain, and was thought Europe in general was pretty cool. She still fully intended to be a world traveler like her dad. But, California would always be home.
"Lighter? You think so?" Nadia regarded Channah. Her hair was a dark blonde, but it kind of suited her. "Maybe. You could use a color change charm on it, couldn't you? Or did you want to go into town and buy a potion for it?" Playing makeover might be fun. "Oh! I know! We could so do like one of those teen movie things where we make you look super hot. And then I bet the boys would be all over you."
Color charm... She'd never really thought about it. She'd seen a student running around with charmed hair at some point, and she'd thought it was neat, but somehow, she didn't think rainbow really suited herself. Rainbow Channah... it just didn't work in her head. A slight change, like lighter blonde, though? Maybe. She wasn't sure. Nadia was getting all excited about the idea of the makeover, and it was honestly kind of infectious. Make over montage? It could definitely be fun.
"All the boys..." Channah said. A few thoughts flickered into mind. Violin lessons with Chika on the shore of the lake. Her quidditch pitch savior, Amy Frost. And most importantly.... Library. Floor. Lips. Adrian. Channah felt her pulse increase, felt a tiny blush in her cheeks. "Yeah, that would be... That would be nice. I mean, if you wanted to. We could do you, too?" A beat, and she corrected herself. "I-I mean, not that they aren't already, or anything, I mean... yeah." Seriously, though. The boys being all over her? That was what was supposed to happen, right? Not Accio Adrian. Something was wrong. Maybe this would fix it.

"Whenever I see someone less fortunate than I--and let's face it, who isn't less fortunate than I? My tender heart tends to start to bleed. And when someone needs a makeover, I simply have to take over! I always know exactly what they need!" Nadia sat up in her chair, looking Channah over. "And even in your case, though it's the toughest case I've yet to face, don't worry, I'm determined to succeed! Follow my lead, and yes indeed, you will be popular."
At this proclamation, Nadia stood, indicating that Channah should do the same. "I'll teach you the propper ploys when you talk to boys; little ways to flirt and flounce. I'll show you what shoes to wear and how to fix your hair. Everything that really counts. You'll hang with the right cohorts, you'll be good at sports, know the slang you've got to know. So let's start, 'cause you've got an awfully long way to go."
Worrying that Channah might take that last comment as an insult, which was totes not Nadia's intention, the redhead backpedaled. "Don't be offended by my frank analysis; think of it as personality dialysis. Now that i've chosen to become a pal, a sister and advisor, there's nobody wiser. And with an assist from me, to be who you'll be, instead of dreary who you were...uh, are. Sorry." No need to be mean, but she shouldn't lie to the poor girl.
"Just think of celebrated heads of state, or especially great communicators! Did they have brains or knowledge? don't make me laugh!" Nadia actually paused a second to hold in her laugh. "They were popular! please! It's all about popular. It's not about aptitude, it's the way you're viewed, so it's very shrewd to be, very very popular like me." While speaking, Nadia had gathered up the candy, and set it aside to make room for the makeover. She pulled out her wand. "Are you ready, Channah?"
Channah stared, wide-eyed, as Nadia swept her into the fairy tale world of late-night schoolgirl sleepovers, of a normal life, of things that muggle teenage girls did together. Fun things, nice things, green things, things she'd never thought of before. It was a little scary, but she was excited all the same. She stood as Nadia gestured for her to. Popularity. She supposed it made sense. People couldn't look up to people they didn't like, no matter how smart they were. Politicians seemed to ooze comfort, seemed to pander to some sort of demographic at every moment of their lives. Frankly, it sounded exhausting, and Channah wasn't sure she could handle it... But then again, it wasn't like she was running for like, President of the united States or anything like that. She was just trying to attact some boys. Boys, not girls. Yes.
Standing there, a little awkward as Nadia finished possibly the most moving speech she'd heard to date, she didn't know what to say. Tilting her head a little to her side, dirty blonde hair falling past her face to settle, she began to have doubts.
"Do you really think this will work?" Channah asked, a little dubious. Being that popular was beyond her very furthert, craziest fantasies, even past the ones where she lived in a castle made of clouds and ran around with a Princess -- Er, Prince, Prince -- of the Beanstalk or something similar and they were very best friends and shared love and make up and just... Anyway, it was crazy.
Channah swallowed hard, like she understood. "I think I'm as ready as I'll ever be..." She said, suddenly feeling shy under such scrutiny. Was she that plain?

"This will not only work, it will be great. Wait here a second." Nadia booked it back up to her dorm for a minute, taking her candy with her. She returned a minute or two later with a different bag entirely. "Right. First your hair." Nadia pulled out her wand, and walked around Channah in a slow circle, considering her hair. Coming back around to her front, she pulled a hand mirror from the bag and handed it to Channah.
Pointing her wand at the other girl's hair, Nadia worked her way around again, this time changing the hair from a dirty blonde to a honey-like color. It wasn't a huge change, but it certainly was a step in the right direction. Encouraged, Nadia also used diffindo to trim Channah's hair, making a straight, blunt cut that was just past Channah's shoulders. She debated between straight bangs or side bangs for a moment, before deciding that blunt bangs would be easiest. She was careful not to make the cut too severe.
"Better already." Nadia was pretty alright with hair, if she did say so herself. And since those spells were pretty easy, she had no trouble getting the magic to work. Now that the hair was done, she was ready for the next part. Makeup and clothes. Yay.
Nadia went back into her bag and pulled out several outfits worth of clothing. "Let's see what works on you, kay?"
Channah waited patiently as Nadia went up to her room, sadly watching as the other girl reclaimed her candy and stashed it away somewhere, far from where Channah's grabby hands could get ahold of it. Channah would survive, though, so she didn't mourn too long. Maybe she'd bribe a piece out of her later. Anyway, this make-over business was more interesting than candy any day, even if it was delicious 'back from the Home' candy or whatever.
Nadia came with a bag, one that was different from the bag that the candy had been in. Channah was stoic, however, and didn't show her disappointment, and stood still as Nadia quickly got to work on her hair. Channah hadn't really given her hair much thought, before. It was just kind of there... It was dirty blonde and long, and she brushed it often. She took good care of it like her mother had taught her long ago, but other than that, she didn't do much with it.
Marveling with her eyes wide, Channah watched as the hair in the periphery of her vision changed color right in front of her! Crazy. It was a cuter, lighter blonde, now, one that she wouldn't call 'dirty'. It was definitely a change. If she thought that was a change, however, what came next was even more of one. With little mutterings of spells and the sound of hair parting from hair, she found her hairstyle changing. Blunt bangs, just past her shoulders... Channah swallowed, nervous.
She shook her head as Nadia left to go grab some more stuff from her magical bag of make over. Channah ran a hand into her hair, feeling the new length and marveling over the new colour. This was all so bizarre, unreal, dreamlike. It was all just happening so fast! She'd started as just watching life go by, content with her spot... and now, she was changing. Developing. This was crazy. Was she becoming a main character? What the heck!
"O-okay," Channah mumbled, suddenly shy as she felt the words leave her mouth awkwardly. All of this attention was making her nervous, and all the change... It was just something to get used to. She felt her face start to grow warm. "I trust you."
