“One eye of newt, four counterclockwise turns…” Niobe’s soft voice echoed in the empty aisles of the Library. The chill of early morning made the Library cold so her breath fogged with each word she said. The only sign of heat came from the steady flame under the small cauldron nestled in front of the Hufflepuff. She was sitting on top of a table cross legged behind her cauldron with a book propped up next to her and open to a page about healing potions.
Deft hands made the appropriate turns in the potion and grabbed at various ingredients around her as she read the directions for a complex anti-anxiety potion. Two more turns, four poppies shredded finely, dash of cold water. Niobe was in her element as she made the potion.
It was well before classes were to start that day and she wanted to finish before she had to go off to her first one. Being in her seventh year she had to begin thinking about her future. For Niobe that meant getting into a training program so she could be a Healer in a magical hospital in the future. She came from a long line of doctors and healers on both side of her family and thankfully found that she loved the family career. Part of her application to one program involved sending in a sample potion to show her abilities. Unfortunately, that application was due rather soon as Niobe wasn’t the most timely student and she needed to finish this potion today.
“Let simmer for ten minutes before continuing.” As she read that line of the potion the girl noticeably relaxed and sat back. She blew a lock of red hair that fell out of her bun out of her face and closed her eyes. The potion wasn’t the worry, it was actually probably the only sure thing she would do perfect for that application. If she needed to show her magical ability with a wand and grades though things would get iffy. After much practice she had stopped causing harm whenever she tried to cast a spell, but she still couldn’t reliably do any wand magic well.
Niobe took more deep breaths to clear her mind of such thoughts however, and slowly counted the minutes in her head. Sunlight began to creep in through a nearby window, and she peeked open one eye to look at it. A sweet smile tugged at her lips as Niobe loved the soft morning light. Maybe today would be alright. And if today was okay, maybe the future wasn’t so bad off either.
