Lycans
As their name suggests, a lycanthrope is a creature that can turn from man to wolf. Though their two-legged form resembles a human, most lycans do not classify themselves as the same. They are pack animals and are more comfortable around their kin than on their own, though lone wolves do exist. Their pack mentality also raises an incredible sense of loyalty to one another, and they operate best in smaller, tightly knit groups. The bigger the pack, the harder the alpha might find it to hold some of his pack members steady. While they are often likened to vampires for their similar nocturnal and predatory traits, lycans are much more attune to nature than vampires are. As wolves, they cannot speak and so rely on body language to communicate. Most lycans live outside and hunt to survive, though they could pass as human if they so wished.
While the two are often confused, lycans and werewolves are entirely different from one another. The most notable difference between a werewolf and a lycan is their control. A werewolf cannot control himself. When he is turned, he is doomed to transform into a monster every full moon and blindly attack whatever and whoever is in his way. A lycan, on the other hand, has no such trigger. A lycan can turn at any and all times, though they may experience added strength and stamina during the full moon. Lycans are gifted with superhuman strength and speed, and possess remarkable healing capabilities. They age slower than a human would, and even in human form, their senses are extended, leaving them very hard to sneak up on. Their wolf shapes vary from person to person but are generally much larger than usual wolves, with fur color that depends on the individual.
Becoming or being born a lycan means immediate loss of magic use, unlike werewolves, who keep their ability to use wands and spells. To become a lycan or werewolf, all one must do is become bit. As soon as a lycan/werewolf's saliva hits a human's bloodstream, they are turned, though they cannot take their four-legged form until their first full moon. For all their speed and strength, any wolf can be held by the simplest of spells, and as such, lycans are very sensitive to magic. The easiest way to take a lycan down is to use silver; any wound caused by silver can kill them if not treated immediately, and until they get the silver out, their wounds will not heal. The same goes for werewolves. A lycan always reverts to their human form in death.
