One two three - impossible to count them all. In a single sideways glance Rioku could see a thousand at a time. It made her feel small just to think about it. A wind gusted, catching at her cloak and pressing it around her, tossing her hair into her face. The tiny bundle of fur clinging to her arm made small sounds of discomfort. She scowled at him, taking him on her palm before tucking him away in a cloak pocket. Silly Aconite. Rioku made small sounds without knowing if he would understand, giving a small smile.
Shade crawled over to hunker at her feet, ears pressed flat on his head. He didn't like this. Mist creeped over the lake, like something that came after a storm but something .. else. Something was definitely up with the beloved school's lake.
Rioku didn't seem to notice, or if she did, she didn't care. The girl pushed a strand of ebon hair behind one ear, the braided lock decorated with beads falling stubbornly against her cheekbone. It seemed funny that while the school changed - students older, people dying, the lake churning and the tower ruined - the stars never did. Sure, sometimes they fell to earth, crashing from the sky, but there were dozens, hundreds more to replace it.
Few would notice a missing star.
"Muggles went to the moon, Shade," Rioku whispered. "They did it without magic. Isn't that wild?"
Shade sneezed, growling as he shook himself. How could she not see the lake going ons? Even little Aconite sensed it, and he was just a bat. He envied Halbein, Rioku's stuffy old barn owl, hanging up safe in his cage. Over the months Shade had grown from a kit to a young fox, losing most of his baby awkwardness. Still, he looked too small, too young, to be lounging about on the bank.
The Stars were forever. Rioku looked up, spotting the first clouds. The distant trees rattled with the window, leaves shot down by the first raindrops. Lightning made a spiderweb over the sky. Yes, the stars were forever - until the storm came to swallow them up. 971
