744 Hours (one month): Testing...
Blaine was glad he'd had summer vacation in which to test his potion. The next testing period, six months, would be harder to navigate, especially with classes to attend. Although, now that he thought about it, Layne had never really been a regular at classes in the first place. This school was getting new students all the time, and he'd managed to pilfer a few sets of the boy's uniform from the laundry.
His name was a dead give away, though. Blaine Larkin. A name like that meant that there was absolutely no way anyone would believe that he wasn't connected to Layne.
Cousins? Maybe. Siblings might be better. Everyone knew that Layne was such a bitch that it wouldn't be such a stretch that she'd never so much as mentioned a brother, let alone introduced him to anybody. But, how would he explain being Layne Larkin's twin brother that hadn't transferred until a whole year after she had? He could think of something.
There was also that Aaren kid, who still owed Blaine his research. That had been the deal after all. But more importantly, how to keep that kid from blabbing around the school that Blaine was really Layne or where he'd gotten his gender-swap potion from or anything else that might led to suspicions? Blackmail might work. Keep your trap shut, or I'm turning you back into a girl kind of thing.
He could deal with all that later, maybe. Today, the sky was the bruised color it got before it rained. The Spanish heat was still oppressive, but without the direct sunlight, it felt nice enough to be outside. Baline lay on the bank near the river on his back, watching the clouds. He was hoping for rain. Anything, really, that might bring the temperature down to something agreeable.
He hadn't been by a mirror in days, and in fact, this was the first time he'd been outside the castle in weeks. His complexion was pale, yellowish and slightly waxy, with large dark circles beneath his eyes. He had grown quite skinny over the past few weeks, and his bony frame made him appear angular and spindly, like a plant gone too long without water.
It was as Blaine was watching the sky that the first drops fell. He didn't move. He was suddenly overcome by the exhaustion that had been plaguing him recently. Late nights spent bent over cauldron and notebook. Hours of note-taking and photo documentation. No one could know of how far he'd gone in his quest. He was sure he'd have his answer soon. Once this testing period and the next were over, he'd have his answer, he'd just have to stick it out.
The drizzle progressed into a light rain. Still, Blaine did not rise from the ground. He would have stayed motionless like that, except that just then, a cough ripped through his body, and he feel into a fit of coughing an hacking, both hands raised to his face. As it subsided, he sat up, wiping his hands on the grass. He was fine. It was allergies. Stupid him for lying in the grass when he couldn't take his allergy potion because he wasn't sure how it would interact with the one he was testing.
He would be fine.
