Things hadn't been the same since the souless minions of Azrael Jerehmiah had attacked the sleepy town of Drakborough, and Julian Forbes would be surprised if they ever would. The Maltan wizard had always questioned the legitimacy of the bond between Talon Windwaltz and the "Lord" Azrael, but he never had enough proof to get the claims he needed. When they had tried the students Gwen White, Shadonius Clearwater, and Felix Genero in days past with crimes against Iberia, he had the chance to clap Azrael in irons and put him before the Wizengot; however, he lacked the evidence to do anything.
It was that lack of ability that cost the Ministry the Triangle Tunnel underneath Madrid. The wizarding hub of all Iberia: now it had become the citadel of Azrael's might and none could hope to oppose it. The Ministry had endured, despite the sudden resignation of Julius Plutus and emergency powers passed to Forbes, but it had become more of a stagnation. They were split in two, the Remnant struggling to safeguard Drakborough and the Black Forest Church held sway over the Diadem itself. And granted that either party had the ability to go both ways, the distance was great and in the event of an invasion there was little chance of help arriving on time.
And that's exactly what had happened when the inferi of Azrael's invaded the town. The BFC couldn't have made it in time, and Forbes had let his passions rule over his judgments which cost him a great deal. Over a third of the houses had been burnt down, and there were numerous injuries ranging from both civilian and ministry worker. And what was worse, the Wizengot didn't have the time to review his most recent case that Julian had sent in and it wasn't likely that they would anytime soon. So it looked like he'd have to get his own hands dirty.
This was why he was at Joker's Bar. The chief Auror, wearing the garb that had become associated with his person, was waiting patiently at a table with a bottle of wine and a small ring. The ring was of significant interest, as it was a signet ring issued by the Wizengot for the signing of orders of highest priority. It also could only be given to the Minister of Magic and the Chief Auror: so with Plutus gone, Forbes had the only ring left. And he intended to pass it onto another for the time being. He'd heard of what a certain auror had tried to accomplish, and since he didn't know how long he'd be gone for he wanted to leave Drakborough in responsible hands.
And so Julian Forbes awaited the arrival of James Mustang.
