[This thread is only here because there isn't a "courtyard" subsection. Whether or not this rhetorical "courtyard" actually exists is debatable. I'm just going to run with it. OH, and open after ANDREW POLEYN posts.]
Vivienne Cartwright exited the corridor off the Feasting Hall into the courtyard. The stone walkways were already strewn with fallen leaves, but they were only yellow. They were a staple of the end of summer and only a glimpse of the autumn to come. And although she had been happy to escape the suffocating silence of her home, Vivienne couldn't help but miss the towering oaks that filled her front yard and lined her driveway. They wouldn't have even begun to change yet, merely retaining their green leaves in resistance to the trees that were half-bald.
She sat herself on a rough bench and sighed to herself. So far, Vivienne didn't exactly feel how one is supposed to feel when entering a new school. Except if you counted scared, which she was. The other feelings she containued beneath her sweet face were those of dread, unhappiness, and Vivienne felt a bit lost.
With all these bad feelings coming to her, she felt overwhelmed and upset, so she began to cry. Her face burned with shame at her tears, for Ravenclaws were not supposed to cry. That sort of nonsense was left to the Hufflepuffs. Vivienne used use sleeve to wipe her blotchy face. She kept her head down and just dwelled in her misery.

Andrew Poleyn had finally found his dorm and put his things in it. Classes have to begin sometime...but that comes after I finally know what the schedule is. Right now, though, I don't. So now I dodge those classes as long as I can. He smiled mischievously. Look like a good kid, doing what you're supposed to. So he strolled into the courtyard, holding a book of Herbology and appearing for all the world to be studying.
But of course he wasn't studying: he could pass herbology in his sleep; in his first year, he pretty much did. There were wild parties always scheduled the night before an Herbology exam...so when he staggered into class and took the tests, his professor expected to fail him, wanted to fail him...and couldn't. Second-Year Herbology at that school was an afternoon class, and ever since his Herbology classes had taken place while he was awake...but he still (albeit cockily) believed he could pass them in his sleep.
To some degree, that was the way he was in all his classes--minimum effort to pass without incident (positive or negative) and enjoy the rest of school. So there was no way he was studying Herbology of all things; he was scouting the courtyard looking for something or someone fun. Hmm...she's cute. Close enough year, too. He watched her pass, trying to figure out what was going on. Too cute to be alone. Unless she doesn't know anybody here. He saw her sink into a bench, collapse into an occasionally-sobbing emotional wreck. Well...maybe she's just having a bad day.
He strolled up, placed a hand on the corner of the bench. "This seat taken?" An exhaustion he didn't know he had been fighting took over a bit, loosing a tired sigh. "New school, new living space...new people. You'd think I'd get used to it by the fourth time."
