How long had it been now since the war of shadows had ended? Over a month, at the very least. Yamaroshi hadn't been keeping track, but he knew it had been a long time. And ever since the battle ended, Yamaroshi distanced himself from people. Being only eighteen years of age, the trauma of real life combat struck him hard. Though it was not simply the fear of being killed or captured with less than a split second's warning, but the guilt associated with having ended the lives of who-knows-how-many shadows.
Perhaps Yamaroshi should have recovered somewhat after the incident with one of the society's surviving members, he was still afraid that somebody would sneak up on him, and try to curse him. On an average of about three times a day, he would hear a voice behind him murmuring "Crucio", and when he turned around to counter the curse, there was nobody there.
With the presence of this paranoia always sitting on his shoulders, the boy began to distance himself from people, and his way of life was that of a bum. He mostly ran around outside, looking for scraps of food, hoping to find an animal to eat. Occasionally, he braved going into town to purchase something at one of the many shops--though he was solitary, he did have money with him.
Now, Yamaroshi sat somewhere in an alley in Triangle Tunnel, dirty, smelly and unshaven for over two months. As he did everyday, he thought about his way of life, and how it crashed ever since that day he agreed to fight in the war. He longed for home, but feared any method he would take to arrive there would result in an encounter with a survivor from the Society of Shadows. The other option he had considered for a while was living in Firefox University. It was only a few days after the war ended that he considered asking Talon if he could stay at the school for a while. But now that was impossible. Talon was gone. The only person from Firefox University who Yamaroshi knew had left, and somebody had taken his place. That meant that there was nobody he could trust. He couldn't ask the knew head of the school if he could stay there, because this person could be a shadow in disguise. And even if they weren't there was no guarantee that he would be allowed in anyway. But if he were let in, what if some of the other staff were shadows?
The boy planted his face into his hand. He needed help. He thought of summoning his golem, Kamaroshi over and over, but he wasn't sure what he would say about what Yamaroshi had been doing all this time. Wanting to escape these thoughts, Yamaroshi laid himself on his side and tried to sleep, in case he might find the chance to sleep without nightmares.
