Ras had spent much time recently away from the palace, and when he was there he spent his time in his office in the hospital wing, rarely dealing with students and even more rarely dealing with his co-workers. Truth be told, he had no urges to spend any time with any human beings, and instead spent his time in meditation. For, Ras was in a dire situation. He felt himself slipping away. He felt as if his real body and mind were becoming unreal.
And he knew this had something to do with his troubles finding any more of the 'horcruxes' that he had created when his former self had died in the Chamber of Secrets under the palace.
He feared that the horcruxes were failing, and that the magic which had created them in the first place had failed. Some of them, the ones created on purpose by Unknown before death, still remained. The others, though, he feared, were being absorbed by the earth around them, much like radioactive metals. Except, the half life of his own former essence was very short and becoming shorter as time went on.
So, he would spend time trying to find these lost pieces, and when he thought he knew where they were, he would go to them and destroy them. Because of their weakened state, he was never effected like the Muryllis Horcrux had effected him. But, despite the five or six trips he made, he only found and destroyed two horcruxes. One was in an old bar in London, one previously ran by Alexandrea Evans, and the other was in the former bastion of the Society of Shadows in London.
On his trip to the old Society headquarters, which was a week before the reemergence of the Society in Spain, he had found a badge, dusty and faded, near the piece of broken wine glass which had been the horcrux. Just to study the effects of the failing horcruxes, Ras had taken the badge with him back to Firefox to study.
He found that the badge was washed in magic from Scorpius himself, but it also seemed to be stained with another kind of primordial magic, one which Ras recognized as Unknown's particular stain. He found nothing of much use, though, so he tossed the badge with the Scorpion on it into a drawer in his desk and forgot it.
But, on the night of the attack on the ministry in Spain, he was trying to translate an old book filled with even older runes when he smelt something odd. It was the smell of magic and smoke. He looked around, fearing the palace had caught fire, but instead his eyes were drawn to the drawer of his desk, where the smoke billowed out in purple and green plumes.
He magicked the drawer open with his wand and let out most of the pent up smoke, but as it passed, he saw a very angry badge atop a pile of old papers, which were turning black. His jaw dropped. For well over a minute, Ras stood and stared astonished at the badge in his drawer. The badge was being effected by outside magic. The badge was sending a message.
It seemed to the nurse that the stains of Unknown's dark magic had caused the magic from Scorpius on the badge to function incorrectly. Instead of the badge merely signaling, it was feeding on the power from the Sword of Shadows, causing the Unknown, dark magic to grow and expand. Ras panicked and shut the desk drawer.
For what seemed like half an hour, he sat in the corner staring at the desk, scared and confused. This meant two things to him:
1) The horcrux radiation could grow stronger and more destructive if reacted with strong magic.
2) Count Scorpius was back.
And, honestly, he didn't know which of the two was worse. The first of the two meant that, technically, Unknown could take over Ras' body again like he did in Triangle Tunnel, but this time much longer and more powerfully. The second simply meant that Spain was fucked.
He knew, though, that both of the two would cause serious trouble for anyone in the world. He gathered the courage and, using a long pair of lead pincers, placed the badge into a lead box, sealing it with several leather belts. He placed the lead box into a satchel and held it as far from himself as he could as he left the hospital wing and took off towards the Headmaster's office.
