It was morning on the day after Fiona's arrival. She had time to check herself into an inn, leave her horse in the stables, and freshen up. After taking a hot bath, she donned a fresh pair of black robes and played with her hair, teasing it and curling it until it was just so. She placed her wand in one pocket and then tried to stop fussing over how she looked, finally pulling herself away from the mirror and sitting down upon the hard mattress that the innkeeper had provided her with. Sighing, she reached into the top drawer and removed the letter that the headmaster up north had provided her with after she had announced that she was leaving, effective immediately. Although she had read the letter over and over again since departing the north, she couldn't help but read it one more time and try to figure out what it meant.
To the Esteemed Mister Talon Windwaltz, Headmaster of Firefox University and Respected Colleague,
I am writing to you on behalf of a Miss Fiona Rigaldi, who just recently left my university after holding the position of Headmistress of Student Affairs and Professor of the Care of Magical Creatures. Though she may be young, she is highly capable of working in any position that you may decide to assign her to. It is with great regret that I allowed her to leave my school, and my only wish is that you are able to find her a job at Firefox which is suitable of her talents. Make no mistake, she has not forgotten her short reign as deputy headmistress of Firefox, and I believe that her time in the north has strengthened both her mind and her heart. I send her back to you in a state of readiness; for she has displayed no shortage of knowledge and courage during her tenure here.
I would also like to send you news of the situation here. Winter has set in hard, and I do not expect to be able to leave until the spring thaw. There are criminals afoot, some who have expressed a desire for havoc. I would advise you to take the utmost precautions, especially with your own life.
Sincerely,
M. Bornholdt
Headmaster
Nothing new popped into her head, no revelation about the danger which he was warning Talon about. No matter. Things would come to light soon enough. Folding up the letter, she placed it back in her pocked and departed for the school.
A light snow fell as she knocked on the front door of the university and was guided up the stairs by a Gryffindor student. Hardly anything had changed since she had last set foot in the school, though it seemed like the first years had grown even smaller than she last remembered.
As she walked down the hallway that led up to Talon's office, she glanced at the portraits that lined the walls. Naturally, there was no picture of her, but that hardly mattered. She'd hardly done anything in the headmaster's absence, though the lack of recognition stung her pride just a bit. Well, she was back, and hopefully was going to be better than ever. Straightening her back, she knocked on the door to his office and waited for a response.
"Talon? It's Fiona. I've come to ask for my job back."
