It was midmorning on the first day of school and the Potions Class stood ready to take its first influx of students. It lay down a long stone hallway lit every so often by a torch mounted on the wall, topped by a slightly green flame. It gave the hallway an aura of mysteriousness that only increased the closer the Potions room was.
The Potions classroom was lit by these same torches, which lined all four walls. Wyndham had also added a large floating chandelier, lit with the same green flame, from the ceiling as he hated dark rooms. If he was going to spend most of his time here, he thought he may as well make it his own.
Their were neat rows of tables big enough for two people with cauldron stands on either side. All the tables faced the chalkboard, in front of which a giant cauldron stood, presumably for demonstrations. In one front corner of the room was the head of a gargoyle protruding from the wall, from which students could wash their hands and equipment. In the other corner was a large desk with a wooden chair behind it.
Curiously, the entire classroom was empty. Even the professor wasn't there. There was no writing on the chalkboard or books on the desks. The only indication that class was about to start was the large hourglass which stood on the professor's desk. It was almost empty, indicating that the class would begin in fifteen minutes.
OOC: Maybe I wasn't clear enough. The Professor is not in the classroom.

Phugsius was first into the class room. His prefect badge was dimly lit until he had entered the potion master's room where it shone brightly. The sixteen year old sat in his staple center-most seat in the room. This class was right by his common room and Phugsius did have a mild experience with potions, so he figured, why shouldn't he take it?
Konrad wasn't one to complain about exercising, but running from class to class did get a little tiring sometimes: especially since he had to go back to the Hufflepuff common room to change books and then rush all the way into the Dungeons. Worse, the Dungeons really creeped the German boy out like nothing else: perhaps it was because there was so little space and being who he was the Hufflepuff always needed space. That and the eerie green torches that he saw when he stood in the doorway of the Potions room didn't help much.
Looking around, he was surprised to see that there was nothing on the board, no equipment...no nothing really save for the Professor and that recurring Slytherin student that he always saw these days. Shrugging his shoulders, Konrad entered the classroom and took a seat a row behind Phugius and pulled out his notebook and pen as he waited for class to begin.
Soccer, Rugby, and Quidditch all have one thing in common: I win in all of them.
Chika was on her way to potions. She had a little expirence with potions. So she figured she wanted to expamd her knowlage, if she could. The Dungeons semmed as creepy to her as ever but that wasn't about to get Chika down.
Chika walked into the classroom. This was one of the few times that she didn't need to run to class. The class room was lit by torches, and a Chandelier with green flames, how neat. The desks were suitable for sitting two people.
Chika looked around to see who was here. It was the proffesor, Phugsius, Who she would be sure to aviod and Konrad, A Hufflepuff that she had met once. She was almost sure it was at the quidditch try-outs last year.
Chika looked about for a good seat. She didn't want to sit next to Phugsius, because she wasn't sure how to act with him now. And she didn't want to sit with konrad, even though he was a Hufflepuff like her she didn't want to have to sit in behind of Phugsius.
Chika looked some more and found a desk in the upper right corner of the room. She Walked over and took a seat there. She hoped that one of her friends would be in this class, Like Sam, so she would have some one to sit with, without having to sit with Phugsius.

Niobe had almost ran to this class. It wasn’t because she was going to be late but rather that she was excited. If there was a single class in the entire University that she was going to excel in it was going to be this Potions class! It was the subject she had always done well in and the Hufflepuff was ready to prove herself after rather mediocre performances in her other classes. Her face was bright and cheery as she walked through the Dungeons (with more confidence than she had last time she was there) to the classroom. Her red hair was down that day and her blue eyes were absolutely sparkling.
The Hufflepuff walked into the classroom, expecting to see a Professor but strangely none was there. In fact the classroom looked quite devoid of anything that would show there was a class there. She fished her schedule out of her bag and made sure she was in the right place and time, and sure enough she was. So with a shrug she looked around to find somewhere to sit.
Normally she would have sat alone and given someone else the chance to sit by her if they wanted, but with a smile she realized that Phugsius was there sitting at a table in front of another Hufflepuff. So Niobe walked over and took the empty seat next to him, smiling as she did so.
The girl got out a piece of parchment and a quill as she always did before class started, and waited for the arrival of their Professor.

Morgan was plodding along the hallways more slowly than usual. This was because she had her nose in one of her muggle sci -fi novels, a symptom of her depressed mood. She just hoped Lucius wasn't in this class either, because she wasn't sure she could face him in person just yet. Still, despite her slow, halting steps, she eventually made it to potions class.
Professora Birchheel's departure was another sore spot for her. Mo had learned a lot from the Spanish witch, and had always gotten good marks in this subject. Still, she supposed the new professor deserved a fair trial before she truly decided he wasn't up to snuff. Still, she was wary as she entered the classroom, as though the room would be in a state of disrepair due to the changing of its occupant.
While the classroom was a little barer, there was nothing really wrong with it. Mo looked around. There was a hufflepuff she didn't know, Phugsius, who she didn't like, and Chika, who while not her friend exactly, did look like she was waiting for someone to fill the seat next to her. Oh. Well, she'd want Sam, naturally. Mo had seen those two at the dance.
Still, the Ravenclaw sat in the row behind Chika. She figured that Sam was her friend, and so now Chika was her friend too. "Hi, Chika. How are you?" The sci=fi book still lay open on her desk, but she wasn't really paying too much attenton to it. She was trying to get her mind into class-mode, but if Lucius showed up, she wanted an excuse to ignore him.
Chika looked behind her to see who was talking to her. It was Morgan the Ravenclaw prefect, not that she really knew Morgan, after all she had only seen her like one time, when Morgan was with Sam in a class chika was in.
Oh well she figured it would be good to talk to Morgan because she talked to her. " Hello, I'm fine thank you. How about you self Morgan-san? That book, is it interesting? I'm always looking for a good read." Chika pointed to the Sci-Fi book. Chika figured since Morgan was friends with Sam, or so she thought, it would be nice to Make friends with Morgan.

Phugsius watched some notable people enter the class room. First after himself was a blue-haired Hufflepuff who sat behind him. Why did he have blue hair?
Shortly after him was Chika who by the looks of it wanted nothing to do with Phugsius. This was understandable. This must have been karma. Ever since the dance it seemed Chika was in all his classes to remind him of what he'd done. The memory left a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach.
That feeling was shortly squelched by the entrance of a rather dazzling girl, Niobe. He smiled when he saw her and gave her a little wave as she sat next to him. "Hey, Niobe" He said hinting at the fun 'study' groups they'd have together for this class. The British boy debated on giving her a kiss, but decided that with Chika in the room he would want to wait. He did want to give her a little affectionate touch though. He put his arm over the back of her chair and started drawing circles on her furthest shoulder with his finger and gave her a sly smile.
Then, in came Morgan Pendragon. He'd met her down by the lake when he was young. she probably hated him though. For some reason no one liked him now that he was older, except for Niobe, and probably Malachy, and maybe Ryo, perhaps Conor? No, the Hufflepuff prefect avoided him at all costs most of the time.
Phugsius continued trying to list people he knew who liked him with a finger on his chin and an upward gaze.

Oh god damnit. That Slytherin is in every class.
Conor was good at two things: Transfiguration and Potions. That was it. And, for some reason, the Slytherin Prefect that creeped him the hell out was in both of these classes with him. How... annoying.
Nevertheless, Conor took his seat in the Potions class, sitting at the front, right side of the room. He wanted to be far from the Slytherin who creeped him out.

It was fifteen minutes after class was supposed to have begun when Wyndham burst into the classroom. He had woken up just as the class was set to begin in the bedroom attached to his office, elsewhere in the dungeons. Only after a few moments of complete disorientation did he realize that he was a teacher now, and that meant that he had a class to…well teach. Noticing that bursting his way into the class was supremely unprofessional, he stopped and cleared his throat, fixing the lapels on his black robes.
“Welcome to Potions Class,” he said, trying to sound dignified. He flicked his head in a way that he knew would make his brown hair fall over his dark eyes and smirked. He started weaving his way from the back of the classroom to the front. He hadn’t quite decided how he would treat the students yet. His own Potions Master at school had taken the overgrown-bat approach. He was a strict taskmaster, sarcastic, and insisted on playing the most awful music during class. Wyndham would be doing no such thing.
“My name is Wyndham,” he said introducing himself. “Today we will be making-” He grabbed the nearest textbook off the shelf and opened it to a random page. “-a Shrinking Solution.” That didn’t sound planned at all. He needed something more. He tapped the board twice with his wand and it started writing of its own accord.
Shrinking Solution Salamander Blood and Lemon Juice
4g Shredded Daisy Root
1 Skinned Shrivelfig
3g Sliced Caterpillar
1 Rat Spleen
Leech Juice
In a cauldron filled with two parts cold salamander blood and one part lemon juice, slowly sprinkle in shredded daisy root one gram at a time until potion turns vermillion. After potion comes to a boil, add in shrivelfig and simmer for 25 minutes. Stir three times counterclockwise and then once clockwise. When solution turns black add in one slice of caterpillar at a time, making sure to wait at least three seconds between additions. As soon as the caterpillars are added, quickly add in rat spleen. When solution turns bright acid green, turn off the flame and add just a dash of leech juice. Let sit for 10 minutes before bottling.
“We’ll start with something easy to see how far each of you have progressed in the subject,” he said quite proud of himself. He almost sounded as if he had planned this all along, but he supposed he needed something more.
“ I also want you to make one small change in each of your potions. For example, you can stir three times counterclockwise instead of four or add 5g shredded daisy root. But I only want one thing changed! When you’re finished, write me a paragraph with the following,” he said tapping the board again.
Answer the following questions: 1. What change did you make? Why did you choose to make this change?
2. How did the change you made affect your potion?
3. Was your change successful? Would you recommend doing it again?
[/center]
Realizing that he sounded like a complete teacher, he shuddered. What had this place done to him? He leaned back on his desk, his dark eyes sweeping the students.
“And if not even one of your cauldrons doesn’t explode, I’ll be sorely disappointed,” he added with a smile. “Get to it.”
Not bad for someone who was making things up on the spot. DERP!DERP!
Thanks Rez for the sig and Anil for overcoming my incompetance at putting it up! giving me the wrong link.
Chika watched as the board wrote on itself, Writing what needed to be written on the board. So they were making a shrinking Potion such fun. After instructions were give, Chika set to work and got all the supplies she needed.
Once she had gotten her supplies, Chika started her work. First she decided what she was going to change and then started. She put two parts cold salamander blood and one part lemon juice in her cauldron. Then she slowly sprinkle in four grams of shredded daisy root one gram at a time until potion turned vermilion. She then let the potion come to a boil. She then added in a shrivelfig and let it simmer for 25 minutes.
Chika then Stirred the potion once clockwise and then once counter clockwise. The solution turned blue and then Chika add the Caterpillar slices one at a time, one slice every three seconds. Suddenly the potion exploded and Chika was covered in blue goo.
She then took up a blank piece of parchment paper and started righting her paragraph.
Chika Chisama Hufflepuff
In the potion I chose to Stir once Counter clockwise, instead of string the potion three times counter clock wise. I chose to do this because it seemed like it would be the most piratical. The change made my potion turn blue and exploded when I added the Caterpillar slices afterwords. My change to the potion was un-successful, and I will not try it again.
Exciting explosion! Thank you for making the lesson exciting. You taught a good lesson about how sometimes magic can go wrong. However, please spell check your assignments before you turn them in. 8 points.

kran woodwrth griffindor
i chose to leave out the Leech Juice. i thought it had the lest affect because it had the lest amount.it made the object grow turn orange then explode.no and no.
Thank you for coming to class. However, before I can grade this I have to ask you to rewrite it using capitalization and proper punctuation. And please answer in complete sentences. You can just erase and write it again above.

What an odd teacher. Morgan frowned, but got to work. There was no way she was going to fail this class. Of course, if Professor Birchheel were still here, she wouldn't have needed to worry. She always set reasonable tasks. Honestly, change something about the way a potion was made. Just change it, all willy-nilly? Shrinking Solutions could be poisonous if made incorrectly. Well, Morgan supposed if she were intelligent about it, she might actually improve the potion.
Morgan poured over her book, looking up all the ingredients in it, determining what their use in the final potion was. Hmm...Well...That just might do the trick. She'd have to be careful. She didn't want to mess anything up. She began her careful measuring, chopping and stirring, ignoring the explosions around her, as best she could. She was hit by some of Chika's blue goo, but luckily, it didn't seem to be dangerous, and non of it got into her cauldron.
Then, just at the end, right before she added the Leech Juice, Morgan added just a pinch of powdered malachite. the bright acid green turned Indigo for an instant, before assuming a pale, butter yellow color. When she added the leech juice, It flashed bright pink, gradually simmering to a more sedate rose color. It didn't explode, or even smoke heavily. Morgan was satisfied. She bottled a sample.
Morgan Pendragon Ravenclaw-7th Year Professor Wyndham-Potions
The change I made in my potion was to add a pinch of powdered malachite before adding the leech juice. I made this change because malachite promote harmony throughout the physical body, which would be helpful if you were going to shrink it. However, this made the potion a light pink in color, instead of the stated acid green. I don't know how this will affect the given potion, as I don't have a test subject handy. I do however, count it as successful, since my cauldron did not explode, however that may be premature, as the given potion might be poisonous to others, or might do something else entirely. If I knew for sure what it would do, I might suggest this experiment be repeated.
Excellent work! You completely understood the point of the assignment. Good choice for an addition to the potion. It shows that you thought about the function of the potion in contrast to adding something arbitrarily. 10 points for the assignment and 2 extra points for realizing that the potions needs to be thoroughly tested.

As the professor assigned the potion they were going to make, Phugsius immediate got all the necessary ingredients and began working.
The cauldron was filled with salamander blood and lemon juice and then proceeded to throw in some mild morning dew to his potion. he continued to follow the potion as instructed by the recipe sprinkling shredded daisy root one gram at a time. The potion did not turn vermillion however. It turned a sparkling cream color like milk. As the potion began to boil it turned a shade of brown and almost blended in with his cauldron. He added the shrivel fig and let simmer for twenty-five minutes. When he returned the potion was a forest green. He stirred three times counterclockwise and then once clockwise. The potion turned to a shade of jade green as he added the caterpillar slices one at a time making sure to wait at least three seconds between additions. The rat spleen was added and the potion stayed that jade green color but it looked like it took on a more cheese fondue consistency. With the flame turned off he added the leech juice and let it sit watching it turn into a nice syrup-like texture and greenish amber look. He slowly and carefully poured it into a bottle.
Question#1 What change did you make? Why did you choose to make this change?
I added mild morning dew to the potion to add a revitalizing sensation. Mild morning dew is often used in strongly brewed tea and coffee for those who seem especially groggy in the morning.
Question #2 How did the change you made affect your potion?
The potion seemed to change the colors it turned and resulted in a jade green mixture as a result.
3. Was your change successful? Would you recommend doing it again? The potion looks like it would be effective but there is now way to tell until we try it out. I would probably not do it again unless I could test it first.
Excellent work. I'm glad you took into consideration the other uses for mild morning dew, but from professional curiosity I would like to know why you chose it for this specific potion. I'm glad you call for testing the potion before attempting it again. 10 points + 2 points.
