Ashelle took his hand and together they walked out of the dining hall. Navara lead her down the main staircase, around a corner, down a hall and out onto one of the many stone walkways of the school. From this one you could see all the way out to the new lake that had just thawed a few weeks ago.
The night air was cool and fresh, Ashelle could see why Navara would want to take a walk out here, though she would have preferred to go in the morning or at lunch. It was dusk and things were getting chilly. Ashelle regretted not brining her cloak, but then she hadn't planed on coming out here. She huddled closer to Nav and hopped he wouldn't notice.
All at once he stopped and went over to the side of the walkway. Ashelle looked out over the beautiful valley and sighed. It was sights like this she never seemed to have the time to see. She was all business and no pleasure, on the go, with never a glance for the world she lived in, but also clinging tightly to this world, in fear of losing her grip and tumbling head over heals into the next.
That is no way to live she thought, yet knew in her heart that she knew of no other way. Her life was a sham, she cling violently to something she knew nothing about. She never saw past the end of her nose, never stopped to smell the roses.
Someday - someday I will, Someday I'll have that luxury. It had always been her excuse, but what good was an excuse, except to hide behind?
Ashelle suddenly wanted to cry, but something inside her stubbornly refused to in front of Navara.
