Lethe sat in the Feasting Hall, pretty much alone on the end of the Slytherin table. In front of her were a barely touched breakfast consisting of eggs, bacon, and buttered toast, a stack of textbooks, and a remembrall. She was staring at the last, it had been a present from her adoptive father, Andio. She wondered if it were a mean joke, like her name. Everyone knew she had a memory like a sieve.
Anyway, after a while, she picked the glass ball up, the smoke immediately turning the deepest shade of crimson. she looked for her school bag a minute, before realizing that she'd left it in the potions room last lesson. She sighed in frustration and stuffed the obnoxious orb in her pocket. Turning back to her plate, she picked up a toast triangle and nibbled at it, wishing that she wasn't so forgetful.

Malachy had noticed the bag in the class the previous Day. He checked The content and in doing so found out who it belonged to. He took it with him back to the the Slytherin boy's dorm. But never Ran in to Lethe, the girl Who' bag it was. He decided to bring it to break fast along with his own.
He entered the feasting hall Fixed a plat a scrambled eggs and smoked sausage.. Then He noticed her, Lethe, she was siting at the far end of the table eating by herself. He walked over Placed her Bag on the floor next to her and moved to the seat directly across from her and sat putting his own bag next to him. When he thought about it What he had just done was probably more than an normal Slytherin would. If it where any one else in his house they would have probably taken the bag for their own.
"You forgot that in potions." He said be for eating a fork full of egg.
Lethe didn't know this guy. She vaguely recognized him as a housemate, but other than that, she knew nothing about him. Evidently though, he was not your ordinary Slytherin. Not only did he return someone else's property to them (even if it was just a schoolbag), he was willing to sit with the girl who nobody else went near. That wasn't to say Lethe had no friends at all, certainly she remembered Telanie, and Gwen, but it seemed everytime she made a friend with someone, they disappeared.
"Thanks," she said abruptly. She wasn't good at talking to others, since she so rarely did it. She went back to her toast for a moment, content with just the taste of it in her mouth, even if it was a little cold. Swallowing, she attempted the conversation thing she'd heard so much about. "So, why'd you do it? I mean, return my bag to me.
"Most of our housemates wouldn't have bothered, unless they were after a reward. Or maybe, you went through it, didn't see anything worth having, and decided to give it back so I'd be in debt to you or something." Okay, so she was talking more to herself than him, and she was pretty much accusing him of being a theif, but it was a start, wasn't it?
Malachy smiled a bit He Didn't know her but her except for the name, and he had found her based on description alone. "The only reward I need is a thank you which already gave." He explained. "I understand your suspicions though. My Name is Malachy, I Actually transfered from Hogwarts not to long ago." he added. He ate a little more.
"So, Lethe, why are you sitting alone?" He asked curiously. He wanted to make friends In within his own house, however he seemed to have trouble fitting in. Especially with his strange non-deceitful personality. In fact he was sorted into this house more for his cunning, wit, and personal choice, rather than his guile, or at least that's what he suspected.
He was...trying to be her friend? Now Lethe was really intrigued. "You really must be new to ask that. Nobody sits by me. Occasionally, my sister, Mnemosyne, will sit with me, but since she's in Gryffindor she has to endure a lot of boos and hisses everytime she does, but other than that, I generally eat alone. It doesn't usually bother me, since having friends leads to complications."
Lethe was being bluntly honest, but what was the point of lying to be nice, if she was just going to forget about it anyway? "Anyway, what's your name? Since you know mine, it's only fair that I know yours." She looked at him with curiosity in her brown eyes.
malachy Raised an Eye brow, " I thought I told you. Maybe you didn't hear?" He shrugged. "Like I said before, My Name is Malachy. And I think the people that think it strange for a Slytherin and A Gryffindor to get along don't know much about Salazar and Godric's History." He said Confidently. He Ate a few more mouth fulls and poured himself some orange juice.
Lethe's olive complexion reddened a bit. He had indeed already said his name, she just hadn't been listening. Nevermind, it was stupid to be embarrassed. Her blush went away. If this Malachy kid wanted to be her friend, then why should she stop him? Maybe it was a little bit like lonliness, but she'd grown tired of holding everyone at arm's length. Nobody could live like that forever.
After a minute of consideration, she spoke. "I suppose there's no good reason why we can't be friends. Alright, I'm glad to have met you, Malachy." She poked at her breakfast a little more before deciding that she was done. "So, you transferred from Hogwarts? Why?"
Malachy thought for a moment. "Too smart." He said with a laugh" Actually it's because My family had to move. The area the lived in was too densely inhabited by muggles to be accessed easily by the Ministry." He explained. "It's not bad here. About the same really. So what do you do for fun?" He asked it was a day in which he had no classes so maybe he could find something to do.
Fun? Lethe wondered at the last time she'd had fun. She mostly occupied her time going to class, studying and writing down the things she needed to remember. "I love swimming, but since it's winter, I guess that's not really an option, huh? I'm learning how to play wizard's chess. My sister's teaching me, since she learned it from one of her housemates, she's been bugging me to learn too. I actually spend a lot of time writing too. What about yourself?"
Malachy shrugged, he hadn't really thought about that. "Well I do play chess, I'm no Expert but I know how to play. I Also like reading, and formal dueling on occasion." He paused and then glanced at his silver ring and he grinned. "And i like conversing with Sning when I'm bored or indeed of him." Sning was one of a kind and priceless to say the least.
Lethe saw the silver serpent ring. Well, isn't that interesting? she thought to herself. She wondered how he'd gotten this Sning, but she had to be subtle about asking. "You can talk to your ring? That's incredible, where'd you get something like that?" or you know, she could just be impulsive and say whatever came into her head.
"It's an heirloom, passed down through my dad's family. It's at least a a thousand years old. The story of how it came to the family's been lost in time. Sning is one of a kind, and a more reliable serpent, you'll never find." The ring squeezed his finger in appreciation. "I'm glad he understands human speech, because Parstletongue seems to have skipped me in the bloodline." He said Some what disappointedly. If he could speak the Serpent language Sning's answers would be far more precise than just yes or no.
"Sning, how about showing your self to the lady I think we can trust her?" He asked. The tiny head, resting on it's coils, Lifted up and stuck out its tiny, silver, forked, tongue, tasting the air. Then Malachy lowered his hand to the Table and the Ring Slowly uncoiled itself. the tiny silver snake slithered on to the table and curled up on the table. Sning was only about 6 inches long and was half the thickness of a wooden pencil. The snake kept its head lifted up and watched Lethe curiously.
Ah, Sning, as in Snake Ring. The name now made perfect sense. What a neat thing. Lethe listened carefully as Malachy explained about it. "Hello there, Sning. You seem to be quite a special little snake. A thousand years old? You must've seen quite a bit in your time." Turning back to Malachy, she said, "I see why you're in Slytherin now. That's quite a pet you've got."
Malachy knew there where other reasons. But his fondness for the little snake was definitely a factor. "More than a thousand but Like I said, we're not sure. ...and yes Sning has seen a lot in fact .that's half the reason he's so valuable. He can answer almost any question you ask. Him but unless you understand snake tongue, his answers are limited to numbers, and Yes, Nos." He explained. "He's also venomous, but the venom's not potent enough to kill an an adult-sized human." He added.
Sning licked the air again. It nodded At the question directed to him. The Snake looked like a strange piece of silverware where it was coiled.
"He's cute. Unfortunately, I don't speak snake either." Lethe fell silent for a moment, as if exhausted from the effort it took to be friendly. "So, hwt are you going to do today? I have a couple of essays I want to write, while I'm thinking about it. Otherwise, class'll start on Monday, and I'll have nothing to hand in."
